Heating pipes are new being laid be
tween the engine room of the Pennsyl
vania railroad sand beuse and the depot of
the same company, by which the latter
building will be heated in cold weather.
The distance between the buildings is
about 100 yards, and the pipes most be
laid under the railroad tracks.
Tbe Effects of Jealetuy.
A jealous husband of this place tried te
commit suicide by making the attempt te
threw himself ever the banisters of a stair
case last night, because he had seen his
wife take a walk with two triends of the
opposite sex. The latter persons are in a
state of meital fear for their own safety.
a. Various Belle.
Mr. Jehn Eeesey has a 50 shilling piece
of curency which was issued by the Grand
Assembly et Pennsylvania in October, 1773.
On it is printed the sentence, "Te coun
terfeit is death." One side bears the
names of the printers, Hall and Sellers It
is quite a curious relic of the old colonial
days of this great state.
Stung by a Wap.
Mrs. Jacob Oberlin, residing near Ner
weed, was stung by a wasp yesterday and
such serious symptoms et lockjaw ap
peared as te render a physician's services
necessary. Her condition was much im
proved this morning, and no dangerous
results from the btiDg are new antici
pated. Perseual.
Miss Annie Sweeney and Mrs. Wm
Painter, are visiting friends in Philadel
phia. Master Jehn Ryan, of Pottsville, is the
guest of his uncle, Mr. Rebert Ryan.
Mr. B. F. Steiger, wife and son, of
Alexandria, Ya , are the guests of Mr A.
J. Kauffman.
Mrs. Jehn Hummel, or Conschehocken,
is the guest of Mrs. Rebert McMurry en
Second street.
Mr. Benjamin Lichty, of the Philadel
phia office of the superintendent of the
Philadelphia division of the Pennsylvania
railroad, left te-day after a few days stay
here.

The exterior of Mr. Hiram Wilsen's
residence and steie is being repainted.

Twe geld rings belonging te a little
daughter of Mr. Geerge Allisen, were lest
en the street last evening. One of them,
in enamel, was the word " Baby."
The 4 month old child of Mr. Benjamin
Ryan died last night of cholera infantum.
The funeral services will be held at the
father's residence en Poplar street to
morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Rev. William L. Ledwith, who has
officiated as pastor of theBellevue Presby
terian church for the past six years, pre
sented his resignation of the pasterage of
thatcbuich te the congregation last week
te take effect en Sunday last. He has
accepted a call te the pasterage of the Seuth
Presbyterian church, in Philadelphia. In
siuticipatien of the farewell sermon, en
Sunday morning the church was comfort
ably rilled. The text of his sermon was
taken from 1st Tbessalenians, vi., 23 :
And the very Ged of peace sanctify you
wholly ; and I pray Ged your whole spirit
and soul and body be preserved blameless
unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. "
The sermon was an Interesting one, being
discoursed with eloquence and ability, and
was highly appreciated by the audience.
Rev. Ledwith leaves this church accom
panied with the best wishes of bis con
gregatien, for which he served faithfully .
He will start en a trip te Eurc.pe en Sat
urday, where he contemplates spending
some time for the benefit of his health.
An Eloquent Yeung f readier.
Rev. Charles Johnsten, formerly of this
place, delivered a sermon te the largest
and most appreciative assemblage that has
congregated at the M. E. church for some
time en Sunday evening. He delivered
his sermon in bis usually eloquent and
interesting manner. Although only a
young minister, Mr. Johnsten has been
drawing the largest crowds that ever
gathered at this church te hear his ser
mens. A handsome new organ has been
placed in the church.
Writing History.
The history of Salisbury township is
being written by Jehn C. Linville, esq ,
for the new ceuuty history. Mr. Linville
will undoubtedly give an interesting an J
instructive account of our township.
Various Items.
G. C. Kennedy, esq , the young barris
ter, of this neighborhood, has been titled
an L L. D by the New Era's scribe of this
place. When Mr. Keunedy has this dis
tinction conferred upon him he will proba
bly desire it from a higher source.
Jeseph C. Walker & Sen have recaived
from the Erie city iron works a
large portable steam engine, fifteen herse
power, which they will place in their plan
ing and chopping mill.
M. N. Hear, night operator at Kinzers'
telegraph tower, has resigned his position
and left for Western Kansas in company
with his brother and wife, en Thursday
morning.
Eugene Lewis, of Cincinnati, O., is the
guest of Elwood H. Bailey, and Misses
Hattie and Minnie McKeown, of Laneas
ter, are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. H. M.
Sweigart.
There is a very geed crop of tobacco in
this neighborhood, but as a general thing
very little has been mentioned of it this
year.
A ball was held in Penn hall en Satur
day evening, but owing te the inclemency
of the weather was slimly attended.
Tbe Company's Parade.
Last evening the unassigned infantry
oempany of this city, lately organized,
paraded for the first time with their new
uniforms and equipments. They marched
te the strains of the City band,and evinced
no little proficiency both in marching and
drill. The streets along the route en
wjiich they marched were lined with hun
dreds of people attracted by the novelty
of the affair, and it was noticeable that
the criticisms of the spectators were gen
erally quite favorable.

lard, formerly of your county, but of late
years a clerk in this office, please inform

Kew Cases in Old Houses.
Dr. Fitzpatrick reports that Leuis
Strabie and wife, Ne. 32 West Strawberry
street, and Jacob Evans and his daughter
Mary, Ne. 121 Plum street, have taken tbe
smallpox. It will be remembered, that
ether members of these families hail the
disease and are new convalescent. The
disease has net spread te any ether prem
ises. Mr. aud Mrs. Strabie will be taken
te the hospital this evening and tbe house
in which they are living will be tboreugly
fumigated and disinfected. Dr. Fitzpat-.
rick has taken down the rid flags from
Mrs. Cooper's East Orange street and
Philip DracbbarV, West Chestnut, and will
take down the Hags from several ethers in
a day or two. the patients having entirely
recovered. There are new only about
half a dozen cases under treatment in this
city.

Londen, July 31. O'Donnell, who shot
James Carey, the informer, was accempa
nied from Jbineland by fats wife, who ap
peared te be en intimate terms with tbe
Carey family daring the voyage.
Tbe Jtmes pronounces the death of
Carey a public misfortune. It says " he
bad been an instrument of justice. Tbe
murder is calculated te encourage daring
and lawless spirits te commit acts of
violence. The joy caused in Ireland by
tbe informer's death is proof that many
elements of danger still exist there."
Tbe Berths Carey Secured.
Third class berths en the steamer Kin
fauris Castle were secured ou June 30th
at Dublin for Pert Elizabeth for a Mr.
Powers, and his wife and seven children,
which is the exact number of Carey's
family. Ou July 2 O'Donnell secured
passages .for himself and wife en the same
steamer. It was net known until yester
day by tbe steamer agents that Powers
was James Carey.
Carey died without speaking after he
was shot. O'Donnell is an Irish-American.
He denies that he knew who Carey was
previous te his arrival at Cape Town. It
is reported that an infernal machine was
found in O'Donnell's possession.
Tbe Cholera Among tbe Troops.
Special dispatches state that there were
eight deaths from cholera at Alexandria
yesterday. A surgeon has died in the
British camp at El-Werdan. The com
mander of the British force at Caire
telegraphs te the war offices that tbe
general health of the troops is geed. He
says that tbe cholera is less violent at
Caire and that tbe cases under treatment
are mere hopeful.
875 Deaths at Caire Frem Cholera.
Alrxandbia, July 31. Twe deaths
from cholera occurred here yesterday.
The number of deaths from the disease at
Caire yesterday was 275.
One American Injared.
Naplhs, July 3t. The only American
known te be injured by the earthquake en
en the island of Ischia, en Saturday night,
was a Miss Vonallee, and she is only
slightly hurt.

Alleged Tampering With tbe Avlrea of tbe
Western Union.
New Yebk, July 31. Officers of tbe
Western Union telegraph company state
that 25 wires have been either cut or con
nected with fine wife se as te be for the
moment useless between New Yerk and
Newark en the Hackensack meadows, that
13 wires have been cut between New Yerk
city and Williams' bridge, and 12 between
the latter place and Leaisdale. And that
all the wires ou the Fert Wayne read near
Englewood, Ills., have also been cut.
Twe mere of the striking operators
returned te work. The men at St. Jehn
who went out are all returned. The
strikers at Halifax applied te be reinstated
but found their places filled
A Manly Denial of the (Jhagethat tbe Wires
Were Cat.
At the headquarters of the strikers to
day it was denied that tbe wires bad been
cut by the striking linemen. If the wires
had been cut by them the brother
hood would order them repaired free of
cost te the company. It was said this was
simply an excuse of the company for de
laying messages. It was denied that any
men had returned at Philadelphia, and it
was said that encouraging reports were
coming in from all parts of the country.
The corn and Fleur Exchange Kefuse te
Interfere.
Baltimore, Md., July 31. At a meet
ing of the corn and flour exchange te-day
resolutions calling en the telegraph com
panies for better service were tabled by a
vote of 49 te 38. Prominent members said
the exchange had nothing te de with the
difficulties existing between the telegraph
companies and their empleyes.

New Yerk, July 31. A dispatch from
Ladville, Cel., says : A telegram just re
ceived. there says the excursion train bear
ing the Grand Army excursienists ran
off a trestle work last night, iu Black
Cranyen, near the Grand Ktver, and
that 140 out of the 170 of the excursionists
were killed or wounded. The particulars
have net been received, but this confirms
this morning's report of the accident.
A Herder Murdered.
Grand Ferks, D. T., July 31. News
has reached here of tbe murder of Geerge
Inkuter, a widely known farmer of this
county. He was herding his cattle when
they became mixed with a passing herd.
Iu trying te separate them he get in trou
ble with the owners of the passing herd,
who riddled his body with bullets.
A Strauga Accident.
Carbondale, Pa., July 31. Geerge
Rowley, while engaged iu sawing in his
mill this morning at this place, was in
stantly killed by the saw bursting, a large
piece of which struck him in the neck,
nearly severing his head from his body.
His father, who was standing close beside
him, was sprinkled by his son's bleed, but
escaped injury.
A warn Wltn Valuable Contents Burned.
Salem, Mass., July 31. The barn of
Horatio Perry at Danner's Plains, con
taining 15 cows, a yoke of oxen, 5 horses,
17 pigs, a quantity of hay and produce,
together with wagons, harness, etc., was
burned this morning. The less is $20,000,
partially insured. The cause of tbe fire
was the spontaneous combustion of damp
hay.

last night and went immediately te Lake

ocratic convention, which will assemble
here at 10 a. m. te morrow, will be the
largest in membership ever held in this
state and tbe present prospects are that
the popular attendance will far exceed
what bad been expected before this week.
There are no elubs here nor any large dele
gations pressing local or favorite candi
dates, but the membership of thecon thecen thecon
