HEAVY STORMS.
TOUAUCO AND UOKN UAOLT UiJIMlEU.
Heavy Itain ad Uall Streams Swollen
Heme Particular or the Damage Dene
Letaei te the Insurance Companies
Oa Saturday afternoon and evening
Lancaster county was visited by three dis
trnctive storms. The first passed ever
that part of the county which lies north
of the city about 4 o'clock in the afternoon
The second, a much severer storm, fol
lowed almost in the same track, about 7
o'clock. And the third struck the city
and the southern and eastern part of the
county between 8 and 10 o'clock.
Great damage was done te the tobacco,
corn and ether growing crops by each of
these storms. It is estimated mat net less
than 3,000 acres of tobacco have been mere
or less injured in the county, some of it
being cut te pieces by hail, some washed
out by the swollen streams, and some
buried beneath the sand washed from the
hillsides by the heavy rains.
These several storms, extending from
the extreme northwestern te the south
western limits of tha county, were very
eccentii-J in their course, causing devasta
tion in some tectiens and passing ether
.sections, net lar en, without uemg any
damage.
The first storm, which passed north of
the city, did no damage, and scarcely a
drop of rain fell in Lancaster. A thousand
persons were assembled at the Ironsides
baseball grounds and great fears were
entertained that the game between the
Ironsides and Nationals would be inter
fercd with. But the hterni passed
te the north and only one single
cloud, net a very big one, hung ever the
grounds. Suddenly aud without the least
premonition a terrible flash of lightning
and clap of thuuder startled the players
and the audience. A great belt of fire had
Tallen from the sky and fell crashing te
the earth just behind the grand staud,
raising a cloud of dust from the ground
into which it struck, and btunniug quite a
number of poisons present. There was a
stampede of people from the stand, aud
some horses attached te vehicles en the
ground started off en a run, but were cap
tured bfeere any damage was done Net
a diep of rain fell, and the game was seen
icsumed and played out.
About seven o'clock the sacend storm
set in. Immense ma-ses of clouds formed
north of the city, betokening a heavy
steim in the northern townships. The
lightning was especially biilliant and
beautiful as viewed from the city, but the
lumbling thuuder was suggestive of
trouble te our northern neighbors.
Au hour later another storm came sail
ing in from the west, and struck the city.
The raui poured dewu in torrents, driving
almost every one from the streets There
was a vcty considerable fall of hail, but,
very little thunder and lightning, the cen
tre of the norm being south of the city.
