The sides of country highways are pro
lific sources for the spread of noxious
plants, and when allowed te mature their
seeds it is almost impossible te prevent
their extension ever the adjacent laud. It
would well pay farmers te remove the
weeds from highways skirting their lields
before the seed has time te mature. In
some states owners of property are com
pelled te remove such weeds.
Fer fast driving eats may be tbe best
feed forbore 98 ; but we held te the old
fashioned mode of feeding horses, which
was generally in vogue from forty te sixty
j ears age, and is still se among a great
many people, even livery stable koeper3
that is regular feeds and short cut straw,
mixed with a (sufficient quauttty of water
te make it palatable, half a dozen ears of
corn per horse daily, when the weather is
net tee warm, aud plenty of geed hay.
We have known whole stablesful of horses
te keep iu the most perfect health, and
capable of doing the hardest work a horse
can be put te by tuts mode el reeding.
Kill the Weeds Iu August.
There is no better month in which te
kill the Canada thistle, as well as weeds
generally aud the destruction of bushes,
than August. It is' also peculiarly a time
when farmers are net se much hurried,
and when the weeds have fully developed
themselves. The f .inner ctu s'e at a
glance, indeed has been all the season, the
necessity of commencing the work of
destruction.
The best thing te be doue with weeds of
all kinds extirpated fiem the land is te
ttse them iu a compost heap, or te gather
them iu large heaps te remaiu there until
dry, and then burn them up, " root and
branch." The practice of some farmers
who leek only te their own selfish pur
poses, who live for themselves, and rarely
have a neighbor with whom tbey are en
friendly terms, is te pull up and threw
into the public highways the weeds from
their fields. There they ate left te ripeu
their seed, aud tbe first heavy shower of
rain that comes, they are carried away,
sometimes for rniies, either into the land
of some ether farmer, or into a stream, te
be landed along the stream for a great
distance. We have mere than once seen
people calling themselves farmers and

TI10 celery Crep.
If the celciy ciep is net already set out,
it should be done without a day's delay.
In fact, it should be in the greuud by the
end el the second week in July. Plants
that are set out near the cud of July
seldom make such stalks as one would
like te preserve for winter. Seme gard
eners set their plants nearly en a plane
with the surface of the ground : "while
ethers dig a tteuch from six te eight inches
iu depth, mixing the loosened bottom
earth thickly with well retted mauure ;
water well and set the plants iu single
rows firmly about six iucb.es apart. We
prefer the latter plan. The plants, if net
set between the rows of corn, should be
protected from the sun for the first two or
three weeks with beards, between the
hours of ten and' four. They should be
watered every morning and evening until
the plants are well established, then with
inauuie water until the filliug iu of earth
is about half completed. Oue thing must
be particularly remembered, that the
greuud cannot be tee rich, nor can the
crop be te raiuh manipulated, being
always caieful net te obstruct the leader
of each plant. ThiB should be especially
attended te when the time has ceme te

Thick Farming.
Frem leccut reference in the Southern
journals te theftprolifie richuess of the
truck crops per acre produced in seme of
the Qulf states, with an obvious purpose
of emulating the success of the Western
land operators iu a corresponding way,
coupled with an invidious comparison with
the products of farming at the Northetu
bcabeard, we think it may be advisable for
theso who may have capital te invest in
agriculture te be informed that the chauces
of profit in this line of busine&s have been
by no means diminished in the way spoken
of. In point of fact, the supplies of fresh
vegetables and domestic fruit for the dunse
population of the New England and
Middle Btates are chiefly derived ficm
their own farmers, and the only advantage
possessed by the Southern farmers is in
being able te anticipate most of our
Northern truck by about a month.
Nevertheless, despite this fact we have
heard of Jersey farmers iu the valley of
the Delaware who en au ordinary sized
farm of about a hundred and fifty acres,
have made a clear annual profit of $5,000
en their crops. It is true that theso men
are intelligent persons who have worked
hard themselves, studied economy aud ap
plied te their business both capital aud
science as well as experience. But never
theless, such examples are neither few nor
far between, and any person who fairly
Undertakes te examine the subject car
didly will be surprised te find hew many
of these Middle Btates farmers have at
tained a comfortable independence by
working farms of that kind, while many
of their friends who have geno West have
done very badly. Of course truck farm
ing in the Middle states requires a very
different sort of management from the
same business in the Gulf states. The
land is always kept in first rate order, and
tbe very best stimulants are used as fer
tilizers. We have said heretofore that
many of these Jersey farmers raise four
crops per year en the same soil, and this
is net exaggeration, nor does it wear out
the land. Fer by the system of manage
ment which is there pursued, these
Jersey farms are always in a geed condi
tion and sell for prices per acre that
would make a Georgia truck farmer's
mouth water.
There is of course a geed deal te be said
with regard te the machinery used by the
farmers of these ' two regions, but the
greater part of the success in the North
is due te sheer skill, geed management,
the personal direction of the farmer him
self, and the closest economy of labor, ex
pense, material and time iu tbe whole
business. Hence, no matter hew prolific
the Southern soil may be, the Northern
truck farmers will always be able te de a
thriving business.
The pregramme for the summer meeting
of tbe stat?beard of agriculture at Erie,
which begias August 8 and continues for
ten days, has just been completed. It is
a very interesting one, some of the topics
te be disciEsei being en important subjects.
The Latest Attack en Garfield.
Pittsburgh Leader, Bep.
Had there never been any public scan
dais about the late President Garfield, or
had there been, and had the scandals been
completely and triumphantly refuted,
during the presidential campaign, then
indeed would the comment of pretty mueh
all our Republican party papers en Mr.
Dersey's New Yerk Sun revelations that
nobody can be get te believe such tales
against "the martyred president," en the
authority of such a scoundrel as Dersey
be well founded. But alas ! that we must
say it there were grave scandals affecting
Mr. Garfield's character and they were net
explained away te the satisfaction of im
partial and unprejudiced men during the
president's life time nor since. His cruel
and causeless fate, his awful suffering, his
heieic endurance, his noble death, the
strong agony and the sublime sorrow of
th9 people, stilled all criticism of James
A Garfield, and made even his
enemies praise him. Geed men all
respected the majesty of his sufferings, at d
feeling that his sufferings were enough te
atone for worse crimes than any he might
have committed, were silent. Bad men
feared te de anything else than join the
popular voice and exalt him te the stars,
lest they might be suspected of treason
themselves. But net through all this sol
emn time did reflecting minds conceal from
themselves that Congressman Garfield's
acceptance of the $5,000 De Golyer pave
ment fee, or his taking of $329 worth of
Credit Mebilier stock had never been ex
plained in such a way as te perfectly clear
his record. Stains en character can be
temporarily obscured by strong emotion,
but when the gust of feeling is past there
are tbe stains still, and there they will
stay till washed out by new evidence, or
worn away by time.
And new we see why the public will net
quite be ready te pooh pooh, even ex ex
Senater Dersey's revelations, without some
examination of them. Dersey is a bad
man, we verily believe. But the facts re
main that he was very iutimate with Mr.
Garfield ; that it was Garfield who get
him te manage his campaign, and that a
letter of Garfield's is exUut, in which he
urged Dersey and his associate Brady te
squeeze tbe Star Reute employes for
mere money te " carry Indiana," and
revive the falling campaign. It must also
be admitted that Garbeld knew, if net
what kind of men Dersey and Brady were,
at least what the rumors were against
them, aud the fact that indictments were
already threatened against them for fraud
in the Star Reute contracts. New, add
te this that the alleged " revelations ' of
Dorset fit very neatly into and threw
an apparently bright light en the known
facts of the campaign of 1880, and
that the previous scandals against
Garfield prove that his character
was net such, as te make it impessible te
suspect him, in this case ; and it is clear
that the Sun's revelations are beuid te
attract attention and te demand investiga
tion. It is easy te say that it is only a
"Sun story." But the Credit Mebilier
expesure was only a Sun story at first,
and se was the Robeson navy scandal of
1S75. The fact is, that as ene leeks back
at the history of the last ten years, he will
have te confess that most of the " ever
true" scandalB of American politics have
been iu the beginning, "New Yerk Sun
stories," which these interested in keeping
them quiet affected te deride, just at this
Dersey revelation is being derided new.
Let Congress leek into tbe matter next
winter, aud let the truth come out though
tbe heavens fall, and with them crashing
from his pedestal our most recent martyr
and here.
ibe " Meuth's Mind."
The solemn pentificial mas3 of requiem

men, including Very Rev. M. A. Walsh,
