WEDNESDAY FVENma.JULY 18, 1888,
LIVE STOCK TKAKSPOBTATIOW.
Improved Methods of CsrrylBg Cattle.
The Yerk Eqily notes that the evils of
the present system of live stock transporta
tion are sufficiently patent te every one.
It is expensive, wasteful, and cruel in the
extreme, and much of the fever-stricken,
ulcer-covered, bruised and lacerated beef
is totally unfit for human consumption.
This constitutes the only semblance of
justification for the dressed beef expedient
and it is only a semblance, for, in truth,
as shown above, the latter involves all the
evils of both systems, and premises no
relief from any. But it is remaikable that
the railroad companies have net since seen
their own interest and that of the public
in the reform of the present barbarous
system by the substitution of safe and
comfortable cattle cars for the shameful
death pen new in use. This would put
an immediate end the competition of beef.
The main additions te the first cost of a
beef. landed from the cars in New Yerk,
are the cost of feed, yardage and repeated
handling, between his first shipping peiat
and his market. Put him into a car, iu
which he rem lias from first te last and
has his feed shipped with him, aud you
escape the frequent leadiug, unloading
and the conscienceless extortion of
the cattle yards, which pile upon
him se large a part of the
price the consumer is forced te pay.
He is fed and watered at case ; he lies
down te rest when he likes ; and be comes
out net starved, fevered aud bruised,
but sound and healthy, fit for slaughter
and the table, lie will have lest in weight
less than a quarter of the less new in
curred ; no part of his carcass will have te
be cut out aud thrown away ou account of
deep bruises, as new frequently happens ;
and one, two or three steers will no, be
drawn dead out of a car as is often the
case te-day. These are each and all of
them great economics. Either one of
them would mere than pay the exponse of
the change te an improved car. But there
is still another and mere important con
sideration. A train of ordinary cattle cats
cannot be given speed without destroying
the living freight ; but cats iu which the
animals could be separated, in which they
could rest, in which they could net be
bruised, or thrown under feat te be tramp
led by their feMews, and from which they
would net have te be unleaded te be fed
and watered with corn at $2 per bushel !
could be put into express trains and ruu
through ou any desired time. Here might
be made a saving of two thirds the time
new employed a sequel of equal conse
quence te the shipper and te the rail
read. This alone would pay the
expense of the proposed change forty
times ever every year. Te any one of the
trunk lines it would be almost equiv
alent te a third track Te the cattle
dealer it would be the difference botween
having his cattle out between Chicago
and New Yerk a week, undergoing untold
sufferings, aud having them out two days
and a fraction well fed in comfortable
cars. This is a reform which is coming,
and it is passing strauge that intelligent
railway roateagcrs, instead of consulting
their own manifest interests iu its imme
diate adoption, should wait te be driven
into it by overwhelming public opinion, or
compelled by federal statu te. This last is
inevitable, unless thu companies meve m
the near future, aud this, it is unnecessary
te say is, politically speakiug, a very dau dau
geieus expedient. It would be the begin
ning of railway regulation by the federal
government the thin edge of the wedge,
and very easy of insertion, because it
would meet a most crying public evil.
Many of the leading statesmen of the
country have already committed them
selves te this sort of legislation iu letters
te the National Humane Association and
nothing cau be mere ceitaiu than that
such laws will be passed, aud that they
will form a very dangerous precedent, te
the railroad, unless the latter shall take
measures themselves te leiuedy the hoiri heiri
ble evils in question.
The N. Y. Sun says en the above sub
ject: "Butchers aud housekeepers are
greatly excited ever the project of bring
ing dressed meat te New Yerk fiem Texas.
The butchers uaturallyebjcct te the scheme
but the housewives don't. Supposing
even that the beef killed in Texas were
net as fine feed as that killed in New
Yerk, which is by no means sure, all the
peer housekeeper wants is cheaper meat.
As the case stands at present livn cattle
transported from St. Leuis have te pay
yard charges at Teledo. Buffalo and
Albany at the rate of $2.73 a car for feed,
watering and bedding. The ex loses en
an average seventy-five pounds of ilesh
during the journey, gets only five pounds
of hay at the different halting places, aud
arrives iu New Yerk iu an exhausted con
dition, at a less in weight and expenditure
of something like $10 per head te the
shipper. A growl is being raised against
the cattle yard monopoly of the railroads,
and there seems te be ample opportunity
for the dressed beef transportation te be bo be
ceme a burning question between West
cm cattle shippers aud Eastern railroad j

A REFRESHING CHANGE
Te Plain English.
Every reader et newspapers 1 as observed
time, and again, In the advertising columns,
many singular and frequently un pronoun c c
able names of medicinal remedies. Tbe Creek
anil Latin languages especially have been
drawn upon te furnish names by which
patent medicines could be introduced te the
pub.ic. The Inference is, in many case3 at
least, that their proprietors depend mere
upon the attraction et high sounding titles
than upon tbe essential merits of the reme
dies themselves.
It is ictieshing orce lu a whlle te find a
medicine advertised, whes simple, intelligi
ble name iu English at once conveys te the
reader an understanding of the uses and pur
poses et the remedy.
A notable instance or this kind is found
in the medicines et Dr. C. V. Bensen,
whose Skin Cuke and Celery and Chamo
mile Pills impart at once in their names,
either their purpose or the ingredients
which compose them. Dr. Benien's Ekisi
Cuks is warranted te heal all diseases of the
skin, such as tetters, humors, Inflammation,
milk crust, cczma, diseases el the hair and
scalp, scrofula, ulcers, pimples and Itching en
all parts el the body. It makes the skin white,
soft and smooth, lemeves tan and freckles,
and is the best toilet dressing in existence.
Its popularity is attested by the Immense
tales et It which arc taking place every where.
- It is the only genuine " Skin Cure " and
all should beware et the various remedies
which have been struggling for existence, and
new endeavor te lido into popularity by ad
vertising themselves as " The Great Skin
Cures." There is only one, and that is Dr.
Bensen's. Be sure and get it.
