Tltie Turnip Crep.
Germantown Telegraph
At this season of the year, when the
time is appreachine when we are te think
of providing tue ground for the
the turnip crop, we like te Bay something
en the subject. It is toecaily te sew
yet, but it is net tee early te set apart the
Held -intended for the crop. Tue va
rieties general'y sewn are the Early Flat
Dutch, the Purple Tep, the Bloomsdale
Pomeranian Glebe, or the Yellow Aber
deen. Fer commercial purposes, it is rare
that turnips can be raised te much profit
unless one is in the regular market garden
ing business. They cinnet be put in as a
regular farm crop, te be taken te market
by farmers, and yet make as much of them
as can be done en potatoes and yet it in se
useful a vegetable for home use among
cattle, that a turnip patch is extremely
satisfactory in everybody's ground.
There has net been much improvement in
the turnip for many years, and bence
there is no great choice of varieties. Per
haps the kind we have are geed enough,
and may be regarded as at least among
the best. In most ether vegetables we
want them as large as we can set them or
as early as they will come. But extra
large turnips are net desiiable ; and if one
can sew turnip seed the middle or end of
August and pull in October, it is sufficient
te satisfy the earliest leugings. Besides,
it is found, perhaps in no vegetable be
much as iu the turnip, that it is culture
quite as much as variety which makes
both earliucss and llaver. The right kind
of rich ground will make a turnip bulb in
an incredibly sheit space of time ; aud the
root in such cases becomes se tender and
sweet that 6eme will eat thorn raw as
readily almost as they would ear au apple.
The right kind of manure is that which
is thoroughly well-decomposed. If fresh
stable manure is employed for the turnip,
we get an enormous growth of feliage aud
small growth of root. In many plants
the sign of a geed root is abuudant foliage
but net in the turnip by any means A
moderate top-growth is much mere favor
able te a geed root than otherwise. In
England, where the turnip is universally
raised, bone dust is the great popular
fertilizer for the turnip. Here we find
that a piece of ' ground heavily manured
for some spring crop, aud which has been
taken off in time, is in a better condition
for a geed crop of turnips than the brst
manure immediately applied at sewing
time. Where it can be made te suit,
there is nothing sj goad a preparer ler
turnips as the potato.
There is one thing worth leiuembeting
that is, that the tin nip is a great exhaus
ter of the soil. Mauy persons, who lind
at this season that they have little pieces
of ground with nothing iu it, think thai as
the turnip canits iu se seen they may as
well have something as nothing from it
This is all veiy well if the turnips are
really wanted, aud cau certainly 'be turned
te geed account. But if otherwise, they
will net "pay for their feed" and it is
much bettei l be without them.
