The Early reach and tlie Green Apple.
Burlington llawkeye.
The Early Peach came te a place where
four reads met. lie slapped bis chest
with his stem and looked te the cast and
the south. " Bismilah !" be cried, "lam
the be88,aud IdrivetheAmbulauce." The
little Green Apple came down the long
read from the west and heard him. lie
bowed te the north and be bewad te the
west. "I am the son of the Clyclene," he
shouted, "and I travel with my own pi ivate
Corener." ' By the camel' of Mahomet,"
said the Early Peach, " I am the friend of
the sexton, and I can knock you out in
four rounds, Marquis of Tewksbury
rules." "Come te the wake." shrieked the
little Greeu Apple, " aud you may call me
the harmless paw paw of the wilderness if
I cannot double up the man who
planted you." Then they looked
down the four leug reads and waited for
some ene te practice en. Frem
the east came a fair young girl from Vas-
sar college, and up from the Seuth came a
gray haired Africau. " Take" you the fair
student?" said the Early Peach. " Net
I," said the little Greeu Apple. " I didn't
come here te attempt impossibilities. Fer
nearly four years that girl has sat at. sur
reptitious midnight lunches ; hbe has
broken up a score of young mm- with her
ice cream bills, aud still she is hungry.
But I will stand aside and give you a
chance at the African." " I am net ou
the suicidal lay this morning," said the
Early Peach. " I knew him aud al-
, ready since yesteieven's sun there have
reposed bancath bis untroubled vest a peck
and a half of my brethren, and he is even
new famished. He is known as the de
stroyer of watermelons, and all my tribe
fear him. Allah is great, but seme things
are impossible." Se they let let many
people paps by unharmed the old, the
tough, the wary and the well seasoned. But
when the day was far spent, coming
down the long read from the west
they saw a ruddy boy, the pride and joy
of his home and the torment of his teacher.
Whistling a merry roundelay he came,
his face as rosy as the glewiug west, his
heart as thistle down. He was their meat.
.The Early Peach and the little Green
Apple set their teeth aud breathed hard
as he came near. " New !" they
shrieked, and livid with hate, thev
fiercely sprang -upon him. Iu two
short minutes thac boy had both
of them down, and as he cracked the peach
te get at the "goedey" he said: "y
jimmy jinks, I wist I knewed where I
could find a bushel of them fellcis." The
Early Peach with a dying gasp tumed and
said : " We were takcu in." With a hoi
low groan the little Greeu Apple replied :
"Of corpse," but the boy slept soundly
all that night and came back the next day
te leek for mere.
