Tobacco Journal. As was predicted last week, the sale of 1,400 cases "82 Pennsylvania, which virtt S ally opened the market for this stock, Drought about all through this week a rush and a scramble ter the same. Manu facturers ps well as jobbers vied with each ether te ecure noted packings : in consequence prices have advanced several cents, and quotations for choice parcels were, at the time of going te press, 20 te 22 cents The current of business running be swiftly this week towards '82 Penusylva nia, drew along the 'S2 Connecticut tobacco, which, as far as the wrappers are concerned, had remained neglected till new. Though the bales reported were net, very large the investment iu the same by manufacturers gees te prove a somewhat better estimation of this stock. The '82 Wiaeensiu is very popular at present. Its cheapness for wrapping pur poses iu the better grades as well as that suitable for geed binder material eraws many investors ; and while the pi oil t te packers is but small, it is neveitheless sat isfactory when compared with the capital invested. Iu old stock very little is being done As long as the prices for new goods iemaiu low old stock has very little show except at normal figures. As we have said in many of our prcvi. eus reviews during this year, a stabln and lei able market in seed leaf for the re mainder of the year depends entirely upon the action of importers of Sumatra after this date. A clear survey of the stocks of uew Sumatra can be had in a few days. As long as importers will net ask buyers te pay the additional duty, a heavy business in this commodity will take place, te the injury of the seed leaf market. Helders el 6eed leaf must net allow themselves te be deceived by the present flurry in the market. It is, after all, but a, one- sided prosperity affecting the '82 Pennsylvania, and only because of its apparent geed quality and comparative cheapness. The seed leaf market as a whole is iu no flour ishing condition by any means. Te bring about a real lively, paying business all around, we need au expeit trade and higher prices for Sumatra. Nevertheless, even the partial improve ment in the market is a boom te be appre ciated. The sales' of the week were the follow ing : Pennsylvania ctep '82, 3,009 cates at 12 te 20c. Crep '81, 300 cases, at 8 te 14c. Connecticut crop '82, 450 cases, mostly wrappers; low at 12 te 15 cents ; fiue at 25 te 35c. Crep '81, 259 c.ihcs, at 10 te 27c. Wisconsin crop '82, 500 cue-, at 7, 10 te lGJc. 8utn.itr.i The ippreach of the day for increased duty bteught many burets into the market, and a heavy business was the result. Very little loose leaf of the crop of 1882 rcmaius in the bands of the growers. The demand for cased leaf continues aetive, the crop of 18S2 being most sought after. It is believed that about 1,000 cases were sold during the past weak, principally te manufacturers, which shewsaveiy healthy condition of the trade. Among recent sales reported are ever 200 cases by Capt. Brickcr, of Lititz ; 200 cases by Samuel Seldemridge ; a packing by Menne Fry, et Lititz, and several packings by Yerk county dealers. Very little '80 or '81 leaf has been sold since the boom for '82 com menced. The growing crop is getting along very finely. The heavy rains of last week did much less damage than was apprehended. A few acres at various points along the bottom lands were swept away and some hillsides were mere or less washed, but en the whole the heavy rains did much mere geed than harm. In all parts of the coun ty the plants are doing well. Many of them, which were set out late are small, but healthy looking. Seme of the earlier plants have attained a large size. We saw a few days age whole patches en which the leaves were from 8 te 16 inches in length and have heard of some that were a geed deal larger. Thus far the crop has been exempt from the ravages of insects. There have been one or two local hail stcrms, but they were comparatively light ones, the hailstones being of small size, and doing but little damage te the plants. The prospect for a full crop of geed tobacco continues te be geed. matters Financial. The total coinage of the U. S. mints during June was $4,944,430. and during the last fiscal year $66,192,704. The total assessed valuation of real and personal personal estate in the city of New Yerk for 1883, is $1,27G,677,104, an increase of $43,200,7G5 en the valuation for 1882. The total debt of the city of Bosten is re ported at $41,281,000, an increase of $1, 118.W0 since last year. 1,639 new pest offices were established in the United States daring the fiscal year just closed. AN ADA3IS ON TUB CLASSICS. Wherein the Harvard Orator Cell Short. N. Y. Sun. Mr. Adams' judgment of the artistic merit of Latin aud Greek writings cannot be taken for much. Against him we have only te set the scholars of all ages and nations who have enjoyed and still enjoy with delight the rich imagery of Hemer, the dainty sweetness of Anacreon and Theecritus, the majesty of JSsehylas, of Sophocles, and of Euripides, the elegance et Virgil, the delicate fancy of Herace, and the swelling p3rieds of Cicro, te say nothing of ether classic writers, each of whom has bis peculiar excellence. Mr. Adams' insinuation that the admiration of these writers is pretanded, and net real, is as absurd as would be the conclusion of a blind man that the people who say they admire paintings and sculptures de net tell the truth, or of a deaf man that no one can really enjoy listening te musie When, tee, Mr. Adams comes te the utilitarian department of the subject, he shows himself either singularly ignorant or singularly forgetful. He would have the college student learn German and French as a means of becoming acquainted with German and French literature, but considering that German is tirst cousin te Greek, aud French the direct offspring of Latin, it is iucredible that he should fail te observe that there can be no thorough knowledgo of the ene iu either case with out a knowledge of the ether. Besides, au important result of knewiug German and French is the ability te study scienti fic works published in these languages acd net translated iute English. Mr. Adams must surely be aware that scientific nom enclature is largely made up of Greek and Latin cempquuds, which are nearly the same in all modern languages, and that a mau who knows Greek and Latin can avail himself, with but a smattering of German and French, of the labors of German and French writers en natural science. As te conversation in German and French, it is notorious that no mere study of books will make it easy, or even possible. Educated: English statesmen. N. V. Trlbune. What the mental discipline of a college course founded upon the study of modern languages would be is a matter of conjec ture, for the experiment is yet te be tried. The classical ceurse is no experiment and lests upon semethiug mere tangible than suporttitien. It has been the foundation of the world's scholarship for centuries. In England it is certainly in our day training men adequately for the duties of active life. Mr. Adams cites Mr. Glad stone as an example of the "indescribable fineuesB of thought and diction which a thorough classical education gives te a scholar." He might have cited him also as an example of the kind of statesman which a thorough classical education can make out of first class material. Mr. Gladsteue stands preeminent in a long line of statesmen who have governed Eng land te her honor, and who received their training from England's great universities They were net great statesmen when they were graduated, but they had laid tLe foundations for future greatness. Ne college ceurse can de mere than that. One thiug is te lay the foundation right and lay it thoroughly. The boy who enters college is the poorest authority en the sort of traitiing which he needs. Left te himself, his cheice is mere likely te be wrong than right. Mr. Adams thinks the classical ceurse did him no geed. There are undoubtedly many graduates who agree with him, and there are many ethers who de net. There are many who think the time devoted te mathematics a sheer waste, and ethers who think the mathe matics most important of all. The point te keep iu mind is that our col leges are intended primarily for the training of our educated class, for these who enter the se called learned profes sions. Fer training in scientific pursuits, and in modern languages, there are excel lent institutieus aud schools which meet all demands. We believe it te be a fact that most college graduates who are con nected with intellectual and literary pur suits, are net only iu favor of the old classical ceurse but in favor of making it mere thorough and even mere severe. On the point of thoroughness all friends of education will heartily concur with Mr. Adams, but there will be many who can not agree with him iu believing that be cause the classics are sometimes taught superficially they should net be taught at all.
