A rreventlve of Infant Mortality.
N. Y. Herald. '
Science in its last issue states, en the
authority of a German scientific journal,
that milk preserved by what is known te
chemists as Scherffs process possesses
certain qualities which make it exception
ally useful for sick infants. This process
consists in simply putting new milk with
out any addition into glass bottles, step
periug aud then heating by - steam ler ene
of two hours te a temperature from 212 te
213 degrees under a pressure of from two
te four atmospheres. The Londen Chem
ical News, in announcing last year Marti
ny's examination of the milk thus treated,
said : "The milk is thus net net merely
rendered capable of preservation, but the
ceseiue is peptenized, se that in contact
with the gastric juice it is converted into
fine, easily divisible and digestible flecks,
as iu the milk of a non-ruminant animal."
Auotber excellence of ScherfPs milk is
that the virus of feed and mouth disoase
and tuberculosis, with all germs, is do de do
fctrejed by the heating.
The caseine of human milk is slightly
alkaline aud coagulates iu light llecculi iu
the infantile stomach, se J'S te be readily
acted en by the digestive fluids, while
cow's milk.even when fresh, is feebly acid
aud is apt te form large and firm coagula.
Cew's milk treated by the ScherfT process,
however, according te the German an
therity quoted, is uet coagulated by ren
net, and even where acidified or allowed
te sour yields "a line grauular coagulum'
which the iufant can digest without dis
tieas. It is apparent that this new milk
is the nearest approximation new known
te nature's feed for infants; and when
the latter is wauting, and it tee often is,
the former should be the best substi
tute. Theterrible iufautile mortality during
the "heated term" in our large cities is
undoubtedly owing largely te the inju
dicious use of cow's milk and te the im
pure quality of the article. But the sim
ple pieccss of rendering cow's milk harm;
less seems te offer a summer diet for
infant-, which, while net expensive, would,
if generally used, greatly reduce the death
rate. "The geed results obtained by its
use for sick children," says this foreign
journal, "are ascribed te the grauular co
agulum which it yielda in the stomach
and its freedom from germs."

P. D. Armour is of sturdy Scotch Pres"
byteriau stock. He was becn in one el
the central counties of New Yerk, en a
farm ameug the hills. It was the highest
ambition of his boyhood days te earn
money enough te buy the farm adjoining
his father's. Wheu the geld fever
broke out he was still a mere
stripling ; but full of youthful enthu
siasm, he started for California, driv
ing a wagon across plains and mountains.
He remained there three or four years and
in that time saved a few thousand dollars.
He had cash enough te buy that farm and
settle down. He bad no sooner reached
home than he experienced a sudden revul
sion of feeling. The streets of tbe village
looked narrow, cramped and dull. The
heuse appeared mean and dingy. He
only remained ou the farm two or
three days, and thou took himself
te Cincinnati. Later he drifted te
Milwaukee, and at the close of the war he
selti a great let of -perk at $40 a barrel,
and bought it auiiu at $18 te $19, realiz
ing a profit of about a million. Te day he
rauks as the wealthiest man in Chicago,
being rated by these who knew some
thing of his business at $25,000,000 or
$30,000,000 His transactions are colos
sal. His lirm employs between 5,000 and
0,000 men, aud ou his pay rolls are about
fifty men who receive salaries of.$e,000
aud ever. He is uet yet 55 years of age.

The city of Paris has just refused a sub

the minister of public works has lent a

Real Laces, as intimated some
time age, are new put en a ceun- ,
ter by themselves. The fact is
worth mention in three ways.
First, the convenience of having
them together, with no mixture
of ethers ; second, the avoiding
the throng thatgathersabeutthe
imitation Laces; third (but this
concerns us quite as much as
you), the fact that our trade in
real Laces has come te occupy
a whole counter.
Yeu may recall, if you liice,
that we have been selling gen
eral merchandise but six years,
and that we began under some
difficulties. It was quite a jump

Laces and such things. Is it any
wonder thatagoed many people
have looked en and waited te see
whether we were coiner te de our
new business as well as our old?
Every new and then some little
incident shows whether we are
finding out hew te cater for la
dies. We have been enlarging and
enriching our Lace stock and
adding te our salespeople. It is
made easier new bv this little
change te see what sort of a
stock of Real Laces we have.
