M. U. S. Tobacco Journal. A veritable boom ! :82 Pennsylvania has come te the front nobly, and once mere is making our market resound with the bum of business, and driving manu facturers into tbe market in swarms. But, " Ob, for the pity of it !" "Twas Pennsyl. vania only and only that, which once mere opened the almost rusted doers of the market and created a buzz and excite ment. Everything clse almost remained idle and sleepy ; and the most strenuous exertions of brokers could net induce even a shadow of the prosperity that all of a sudden fell ever the '82 1'eunsylvania. The first days of the week opened with that sluggishness which for se long a time has characterized our market. Then suddenly a prominent up town cigar manufacturing firm descended upon 1,400 cases of '82 Pennsylvania. Tais was the signal rocket for many a hesitating, meditating and cal culating would be buyer, and in quick succession sales of thousands of cases of '82 Pennsylvania were reported from all corners of the market. In some cases the prices realized were frankly exhibited te a reprcsentative of this paper. They did net average ever 18 cents ; but in the largest transactions an impenetrable secrecy was maintained in regard te prices by both sellers and buyers. Nevertheless it is reasonable te assume that the selling 'figures vacillated between lGc and 18c. The affect of these transactions will ba felt throughout the leaf markets of the United Slates When buyers, manufacturers of the standing of McCoy & Ce., Levy Bres., and Premcr & Jacob, etc., invest at this tinie of the year and in face of such an overwhelming sur plus of leaf, in such telling quantities, the particular kind, of tobacco is sure te bj bj ceme the cantral attraction of the market. Therefore further large transactions in '82 Pennsylvania are very likely te take place next week, though a rise in prices is problematic?! for the present at least. As we said before, most ether tobacco. remain neglected. The demand is for cither very fine or very common goods. Of com men stock there is a supsrlluity ; of fine stock there is net. The void is filled by Sumatra. Were it net for this fact, fine scsd leaf wrappers would be weith oue dollar a pound. A great deal tlopends upon the market quo tations of Sumatra after July 1 next. If importers will sell icaseuably, their stock will meve freely anil keep down prices of Que seed leaf. If ou the ether hand tliey expect te harvest the additional duty right off, fiue seed 3af is bound te oxpjrieiioe a decided rise i.i prices. Total 7,150 cases The Lecal Tebaccj Trad a. Thore has been mere animation among tobacco men during the past weak t h m at any former time during the season. Tne sales have been large, the prices are im ported liberal, and the dealers are very sanguine of a profitable year's business. Of the crops of '80 and '81 the sales reached between 300 and 400 cases ; bat it was of the crop of '82 that the greatest amount of sales were made. De Haven sold a package of COO cases te a New Yerk party ; Stener & Ce. sold 152 cases ; Strickler, 100 cases ; Frank Bair 100 cases, and several ether dealers are re ported te have sold lets ranging fiem 30 te 100 cases. Liberal offers have been made for several of the largest packings in this city, but the sales wcie net consummated, the packers holding off for better offers. The activity in the home market and the immense sales of 1882 reported in New Yerk, are ovideacas that the crop is held in high esteem by the trade, and that it will go off " like het cakes" when it has gene through its sweating, been officially. sampled and pro pre pared for the market. Farmers for a week past have been com plaining that the young plants are sutler ing for want of rain. Frem the appearance of the sky at this writing (Tuesday morn ing they will probably have as much rain as they want before this issue of the In telligencer reaches them. We hear of very few complaints thus far of damage te the new crop by insects. Nearly all the farmers have finished their planting, and these who have net will close up that part of the farm work within a few days, While the acreage in some localities has been considerably re duced, in ethers it has been increased, and the area of tobacco growing in Pennsylva nia has been constantly enlarging. Tc Tc bacce planting has erect far up the North and West branches of the Susquehanna and all its tributaries, and is finding favor in the rich valleys in ether pirts of the state. A disnateh from Washington. Pa.. one of the extreme western ceunties. of the state, says that ' several persons in Washington county are this year trying the experiment of raising tobacco. Wm. Smith, a prominent banker and dry goods merchant, has several acres planted. J. W. Braner has six acres, aud William Wylie one acre." ritOM JAIL TO WEALTH. The Kemarkable Career or a Burglar. Law yer and Speculator. New Yerk Evening Telegram. Wayne county, Pa., has a character who casts Victer Huge's " Jean Valjean " into the-shade, for, while ene reformed in geed earnest, the Wayne county man fluctuates between deeds of chivalry and acts of baseness. His name is Geerge Avery, and at present he is living in one of the Western states. In 1870, when Avery was only twenty-ene years old, he was charged with the murder of Jehn' Haynes, of Relands, Pike county. He was arrested aud an officer detailed te take him te Milferd. Evidence of the murder was said te be se cenclnsive that he could net possibly escape hanging. On their way te Milferd, where the county prison was located, the officer im bibed freely of liquor and became help lessly drunk. Avery ' secured the keys which uulecked the handcuffs and shackles by which he was bound and removed the manacles, placing them in the bottom of the wagon. He took the reins from the stupidly dmuken officer's hands and drove te the nearest hotel, where he arrived with the officer in charge at a late hour. He put the drunken mau te bed, reused him the next merninr, get him in the wagon, drove en te Mlford, when, after he had put the officer in bed at the hotel, he walked up te the jail and delivered himself up te the keeper, telling him about his experience with the constable. He was confined till September this was in June when he wrs tried for mur der, and, in spite of overwhelming proof, was acquitt 'd, te the surprise of every body, the court nieit of all. The day he was discharged from custody he was ar rested, charged with burglary, convicted and :nt te state piiseu for ayear and a half, lie served the full term, reading law during his confinement. Whoa he left the Eahtrn penitentiary, at Philadelphia, he returned home, ci jned a law office, arrest-id several citizens who hail testified against him when he was en trial for burglary, charging them with perjury. Failing te make out hi.-; case, he was sen tenced te pay the costs. IIe had no money se he went te jail again, whera he re mained until h: ? friends could scrape up enough money te get him out. When, finally, he beeaiue a free man again, he retuiiud te his old home at Rowlands. Frem that time forward bur glarics wcre numerous about there, but never could evidence sufficient te convict Avery be obtained. A year or se later he went te Oil City, i'a., where he hung out his sign as a lawyer. Clients were plenty and fees large. Aviry was reaping a golden harve.sr, when he was convicted of forgery and sent te the Wcbern peniten tiary for four je.us and eleven months. While theie lie foil in love with ene of the keeper's daughters, and she offered te assist him te escape-, but he re fused te leave until hi" time was out. At the end of the term he went back te Rowlands, seen afterward prefeisel leligien, began preaching a little stviudl.-d a neighbor out of S100, and was induced by the neighbor, who cnfeiccd argument with a big shot gun, te lefuud the meney. Aveiy then lc 't for Luzurne county, where he go!, iwle difficulty ami was sent te the Eastci n penitential y for a short term. Upen his lulrase he stele enough money te tike him te the mining regions of the West, where under an assumed itanie he opened a law office and specula ted in stocks. In 1833 he "stiuck it rich," cleared $750,000, gave up stocks at once, invested his money in government bends, .sent Ter !iis liuaucec, the ptisen keeper's daughter, who joined him in Chi cige, where they weie married. Avery is only thirty four years old. IIe newr touched liquor, never g.imbled or used tobacco, and c! linn te have been the " victim of cii,cn,nst;i'ic.js."
