Germautewn Telegraph.
If net time new, it Boen will be, for the
young cantleoupe plants te be attended te,
and the hills in which there tee many
vines be thinned out, always allowing ihe
strongest te remain, three plants being
enough in a hill In removing the weeds
and stirring the soil, tee much care can
not bp bestowed se as net te disturb the
vines after they have commenced running,
as it must be remembered that a large
proportion indeed, much the larger pro pre pro
eortionof the nourishment of the vines
is derived from the soil through the root
lets attached thereto as the growth pro
gresses. When the fruit has reached about
one-half its size, put a small piece of slate,
which is the best, through apiece of shingle
or thin beard will answer, under each
cantaloupe, and it will prevent the earth
from extracting the flavor from about one
fourth the fruit, ai we commonly find te
be the case with the purchased cante cante
leupes. Of course this method will net
answer for Jarge crops intended for
market, but it should net be neglected in
garden crop for demestic consumption, i f
we desire the full and exquisite flavor of
this, in our judgment, incomparable fruit.
Te Keep Cistern-Water 1'ure.
When cistern-water is pure there is
nene better or mere wholesome ; but it is
frequently the case that in summer it be bo be
cemes offensive and quite uufit for use.
Te remeve the efTeiisivencss lime is gener
ally recommended, a large lump or two te
a cistern holding four or five thousand
gallons ; but, il tee much is used the
water becomes hard and dees net " agree"
with some people, and dees net answer se
well for cooking. Charcoal is frequently
employed with excellent cflcct ; but that
which is the most oflicieut, as a corres
pondent in Rhedn Island assured us some
time age, is te allow the supply spout te run
te the bottom of the cistern. The Ircsh water
being heavier than the old, forces the lat
ter te the surface and is thus consumed
before it becomes oflfeusive, and se en at
each rain. This leeks like being a remedy
for what'has been se much complained of,
and will be au answer te many inquiries
matin of us 0:1 the subjec'. Hut there aie
certain conditions that should be eliserv
ed by all havtnr a cistern, the lirst of
which is that it should be thoroughly
cleaned out twice a year ; and the second J
that the conductors en the loefs should 1m
sorved in the same way whenever needed.
Bew l.eujr ltutter Will Keep.
A few vears aire wliile a well in this
place was being cleaned, a half-pound et
butter was found in the bottom as geed
and sweet as when first made. Hew long
it had been there no one knew. The pros
out occupant of the prrmifcs has been l-i
yours en the place, and the pump being hi
constant use thore had been no occasion
before te have it cleaned. The butter
must have been theie all this time, and
hew long befere is net known The out.
side was of a paler ciler than that within,
but otherwise there was no change.
It is net unknown te geed dairy folks
that butter will keep well in cool, pure
spring water, and some have taken ailvan
tage of the f.tel te preserve butler in close
vesscls under the surface. Hut we think
it is net gonerally known that it would
keep se long and in actual contact with
tbe water. It might hi of gicat value
whethcr this hint ab nit preserving butter
might net bj t.ikeu advantage of, se as te
initiate a lugul.u plan of preset ving hm.
ter swoet and fresh, until markets or ether
eircunihtances favor geed prices. It is one
of the weaknesses or the hotter business
that at sonie seasons pi iues are ruinously
low and the usual remedy of petting is net
a very geed euro.
The water of course must he cool and
pure. At a high temperature, such as
most water near the snrface reaches
vogetablo organisms grew that would
seen commiiuicate decay te any organic
matter in the water ; but thore are many
places wherea lagoon of the preper cendi
tioaefpuro wall water could readily be
constructed.
It may net be out of place hereto ic
mark that little hints such as these aie
continually occurring in almost evcry ene's
experience, but only seen te be forgotten.
Yet often if the suggestion be listened te
and the thread followed up one might get
en the track of some geed idea that would
rapidly make a fortune. We thing thiit
new inventions require much study ; lint
the truth is most of our bast discoveries
have been by accident.
