Charles H. Billar, age 19, a bookkeeper
for J. & F. T. Fearey, of Newark, went te
Ceney Island. He was alone, and while
standing, at neon, en the beach between
the Brighten Beach hotel and the iron
pier, he noticed a little child about four
years of age playing en the sands with a
toy bucket and shovel. Further up the
beach steed a horse and carriage near
which sat a middle aged man and a girl of
about 10, reading. .They were net appar
ently observing the child, which wandered
close te the water. A high wave swept
up the beach and enveloping" the child
caujed it off its feet. At that moment the
girl, turned her head and saw what had
occurred . Wi th a scream she sprang upon
her feet and rushed te the edge of the
water, only te see the child swept ent by
the ie treating tide. Dashing into the
water she reached the dhild, but in a mo
ment she was beyond her depth. The man
left the carriage and struggled te get te
where, the two lives wero in peril, but he
was lame.
Billar, who is a well built lad and a geed
swimmer, hat! advanced te the spot, and
without any hesitation he kicked off his
shoes and pluuged into the water. The
two girls had floated some distance, the
elder holding en te the younger, but by a
few vigorous strokes Billar reached them.
He held fast te his two charges, and swam
with them until he get a footing ou -the
