Jenkins, jr., for the murder of Rev. J. Lane Berden began yesterday. An effort was made by the defense te postpone the case, bnt Judge Legan decided te bear the testimony, which went te show that the accused tired the fatal shot. The case was adjourned until today. Immediate ly after the sheeting of Berden Dis trict Attorney Hall wrote te J. S. Butler, father of the young lady whose name is involved in the matter, giving him the particulars of the tragedy, the alleged cause being the ruin of his daughter. Mr. Butler replied under date of June 18, say ing: "There is net one word of truth in the charge you refer te. I regret very much Mr. Jenkins took tip such an idea. My daughter says that slie said nothing te Mr. Jenkins that he possibly could infer anything of the kind A special from Alexandria, La., gives the following statement made by Miss Mary Butler: "I hereby deny hav;ng made at anv tirae a confession te Mr. Ben. T. Jenkius, jr., te the effect that Mr. Berden had in any manner ill treated me, only se far as shall be explained. When asked by Mr. Jenkins if Mr. Berden had treated me badly, I told him yes. He then asked in what way. I told him 'I can't tell, but you can think any way you wish.' The only indignity ever offered by Mr. Berden te me was in the library about ten days age. I was there for some books, when he approached me and attempted te put his hands upon me and I immediately left the room and was never in his presence alene again dur ing the remainder of my stay at Mansfield. This treatment of Mr. Berden te me was never mentioned te any oue but my mother." Miss Butler has a father and two broth ers te protect her honor if such protection had been necessary, one is l years old, handsoine and unusually intelligent.
