Seed Ief, Sumatra and Havana ler the
Week Ending Saturday, Jane 1C,
10 A. M.
U. 8. Tobacco Journal.
The week's business was depressingly
light, a litis ever 1,000 cases only having
changed .hands. There was considerable
inquiry in the first part of the week for
'83 Pennsylvania, and from the animated
appearance of the market, the number of
would-be buyers, composed mainly of city
manufacturers and out-of-town jobbers, it
was estimated that sales for the week
would feet up heavily. But the result, as
stated above, was exceedingly meagre. Of
the '82 Pennsylvania net a single sale was
made public. There is but one opinion
prevalent among these who have examined
it this week, and that is that it is excellent
in all respects but the price. The asking
figure for the fine lets is about twenty
cents. It is tee well known that this to
bacco was bought at about 15 cents at the
highest, and therefore buyers new con
sider the profit te packers exorbitant. Te
a view of this kind decided objection could
be made, if it were net for the fact that
our market is overflowing with all kinds
of available stock and that in conjunction
with the deluge of Sumatra, a full assort
ment may be had all the year through.
Besides this, the '81 Pennsylvania is de
pressing the price of the '82 Pennsylvania.
The former is beginning te assume a bet
ter leek, both in quality and color, brought
about by the second natural sweat ; and
at the prices it is be bought for te day ( 7
te 13 cents ) it is becoming a competitor
of the '82 crop. Five hundred eases of the
'81 Pennsylvania which changed bands
tbis week illustrata glaringly.
'82 Connecticut Havana seed is very
popular, but jobbers can only be induced
te purchase it with difficulty, owing te the
high prices demanded.
Connecticut wrappers of the new crop
are at present entirely ignored, and the
seconds, upon which feverish hopes were
based by packers, are actually net wanted
at all, the new Wisconsin offering mero
useful goods for the purpose at almost
one-half the figure. Owing te the cheap
ness of the '82 Wisconsin considerable
business can be expected seen, sum pie
purchases made fe far by manufacturers
being spoken of very favorably.
The new state, also, geed as it is, sutTers
from the high prices entertained by pack
ers, and no sale of any importance has
been made se far.
The new Ohie in the market, with the
exception of a few extra fine packings, is
a humdrum article. It was bought cheap
and it sells only at low figures.
Our tee sauguiue leaf dealers will find
it te their advantage if they peruse our
article en the importation of Sumatra in
another column. We foresaw the ruin
this Sumatra would work te our seed leaf
market. We tried te impress the trade
with the importance of acting cautiously
in makiug purchases in new tobacco ; we
tried te reuse the trade into solid, euar
getie action against the low tariff en the
same, but our efforts were met with arro
gance, doubt, ridicule and conceit.
The seed leaf trade is strangled, and to
day there is net even a silver lining te the
cloud of depression which hangs ever the
market, and will hang ever it till a pro pre pro
hibitive duty is placed en this stock.
The sales of the week were :
Pennsylvania crop '81, 500 cases, at 7 te
13 cents.
Connecticut crop '81, 250 cases, fine
wrappers, 30c; medium 1G te 20c.
Crep '82, 300 cases, p. t.
Wisconsin crop '82, 300 cases Havana
seed, 8 te.l2c.
New Yerk state crop '81, 100 cases, at
9 te 12c
Sumatra. Sales reached about 800 bales
of which the greater portion was of the
new crop. Prices for the new ran from $1
te $1.25 in large parcels, very little having
been sold hrstnall lets.
Havana. Market continues dull. S.tl-js

Seed Leaf A very satisfactory business
is admitted in cigar leaf by all dealers and
packers the past week. The '.81 Connec
ticut and Pennsylvania is going into con
sumption nicely. The '82 Connecticut,
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin already finds
admirers at lair ligurss. The crop el 8
is beltoved te be premising, and new lar
in advance of usual crops at this season of
the year.

The Lecal Tobacco market.
There is net much doing among the te
bacce dealers this week. Some of them
are engaged in packing their purchases
et 1882 leaf, and a few are in the field
picking up odd lets of loose tobacco yet
remaining in the hands of growers. Net'
a few of the heavy packers have finished
packing and closed up their warehouses,
se that the tobacco may have a fair chance
te go through the sweating process which
thus far has been very satisfactory.
We hear of the sale of about 300 cases
of old tobacco durin? the week te mann -
faetnrers and jobbers, at home and abroad
but no figures are given. It is understood,
however, that holders are net se willing
te sacrifice their packing of '80 and '81 as
they were reported te be seme mouths
age, Indeed, '80 tobacco appears te be
getting scarce, and there has been a verv
big hole made in the crop of '81 by the
repeated drafts made upon it by manufac
turers and jobbers.
Fully three-fourths of the crop of 1883
has been planted, and within a week or
ten days the whole crop will be in the
ground. The plants generally leek healthy,
the cutworm, in some sections, has dene
considerable mischief,, bnt the damage is
being repaired by resetting the plants de
stroyed by this little'pest, or washed out
by the heavy rains. The weather has
generally been favorable, and the prospect
j is thus far very favorable for a geed crop.
ANOTHEK CASHIER'S DOWNFALL.
CenreMlsg te Have Takes 944,600 Led ea
by Speculation.
Anether serious financial crime is made
public .at Bosten. Arthur H. Blaney,
cashier of the Massachusetts Lean and
Trust company, is a confessed defaulter.his
stealings amounting te 844,000. A few
days age there was a shortage of $700 in
his accounts at the close of business, a
deficit which, he explained, was occasioned
by a sudden emergency and which he
premised te make geed the next morning.
He kept his word and- protested that
nothing else would be found wrong in his
accounts. President Cresby nevertheless
suspended him until an investigation
could be made. Experts were employed
and a. total deficit of $44,000 was found
te exist. The thieving began in Novem
ber, 1880, and apparently ceased in No
vember last. His eseape from detection
was due rather te luck than te any par
ticular shrewdness. His plan was simply
te charge customers with making larger
drafts than the sums actually drawn, and
then te be sure that no one else get held
of their deposit books when next they
presented them. When the amennt
reached a large sum he charged en the
books as unpaid a nete of $40,000 due the
bank which had been ,aken up.
When the defalcation was discovered a
warrant for Blaney's arrest was sworn
out, but it was found that he had disap
peared. It was said he had gene te New
Yerk with his wife and it was feared he
had fled the country. It was learned en
Monday from New Yerk, however, that
he had taken the Fall River line for home
and he was arrested at his residence. He
made a full confession and attributes his
crime, te the old cause losses in stock
raargits But it is reported that while
his first misstep may have been thus
brought about the csntiuuatien of his
peculations was the result of blackmail by
a person who gaiued possession of his.
secret. He was arraigned and held for
trial in $50,000 bail. He is a man of thirty
kyears, smart and popular and has a who
and (me child.
The Slaughter of the Innocents.
Sir Henry Frederick Ponsenby, private
secretary te Queen Victeria, has telo tele
gr.iphcd te the mayor of Suiulerlaud that
her majesty directs him te say that she is
terribly shocked at the awful calamity
which occurred in Victeria hall Saturday,
and that her heart bleeds for the suffer
ings of the many bereaved parents. She
prays te Ged te support them in their ter
rible distress. Sir Henry also says her
majesty is most anxious te hear hew tl.e
injured children are.
Several of the children who left the ex
hibition before the accident occurred say
that they saw a man, just before the rush,
partly close the deer en the lauding where
the disaster took placa. It will be proved
at the inquest en the bedies of the unfor
tunate little one that a man belted the
deer ajar, in order te facilitate the distri
bution of toys te the children as they were
leaving the premises. The box containing
the toys, which had been placed iu pesi
tien iu lcadisiess for the distribution of
the prizes t, the children, is still standiug
near the deer.
The nurabm- of deaths caused by the
calamity in Sunderland has reached 197.
