Arrival el Kilendit from otile te Attend llie Obsrqalea MU Beesen aud the DfHil Man. TLe excitement at Unioutewn ever the killiug of Dukes lias quieted down very much, but the liagedy is still the absorb ing subject for conversation. Several of Dukes' friends from Ohie arrived there Friday and went by carriages out te the Struble lefcidence, from which place the funeral took placa te day at eleven o'clock. Rev. A. J. Mulheltand. pastor of the Presbyterian chuich, of Uoientown, and 31. U. Uauey, p.ister el tue ITesuytemn chuich at AlcClellaudtewn, officiated at the funeral Dukes was a member of a Presbyteiian chuich iu Ohie, where he used te live, but has never communed since he has been at Uniontown. Frem the fact that Miss Beesen, who is Dukes' most intimate lady friend, wanted te get his keys se badly from the coroner en the night of the sheeting it is gener ally supposed he had in his possession papers of great importance te her. Many think she knew he had made a will and wanted te get it. Others supposed she was after letters written by her te him. Miss Beosen's friends deuy that she was engaged te Dukes and say bhe was nothing mero than a friend, and they are very much worried th.it her name was' ever published iu connection with his. As te whether Dukes made a will or net has been a question of much talk aud it was net known but by oneer two whether be had or net. Although Dukes was a man of excellent he.tlth and qu;te yeuug net yet 33 years old he did in his short life make two wills. The Urst ene was made some five or six years age, just be fore starting en a tiip te the West. A short time after his return herau from that trip he destroyed that will aud did net write the sejeud oue till after he killed Captain Nutt. This second will was written while he was supposed te be in jail but was taking it easy in the sheriff's sitting room. On the morning of the habeas corpus hearing he was in his office with the sheriff befere the hearing took place and he called C. D. Cenner, who was passing by, te come in. He slid te him : "Here is my will ; I waut you te wituess it, for I de net knew what may happeu." He doubtless feared that some one might sheet him as he was going along thostreet te the hearing. Ne oue knows the con tents of this will aud will net until it is entered for record. Dukes possessed heni eight te twelve thousand dollars' worth of property. A great deal of this is iu West ern landn. Henry Jeunings, the proprie tor of the hotel wheie Dukes bearded, says that Dukes told him a few days age that he bad received several anouymeus Jetters saying that he was te be killed and it made him feel a little fearful. Dukes, while iu conversation with oue of his friends after his acquittal, said that he expected seme one would attack him, but if they did he would t-ce that the parly who did it died if he did. Te this same individual he said there was a man iu town whom, he would like te get iuto iute an encounter with iu seme way, se that he might have au opportunity te kill him. The name of the geutlemau he desired te kill is withheld, but he is a very promi nent and respcctable gcutleinau, and the very last person that any oue would imagine that Dukes or any ene el se would want te kill. An old Christian gentleman said Friday in talking about the sheeting of Dukes : " The scriptures have been fulfilled whosoever sheddeth man's bleed by raau shall his bleed be shed. The opinion that these who euceuraged Dukes te remain here aie as much respeusihle for his death as Nutt increases each day. The pei sons who have visited Nutt en Friday were his ceuuiD, Clark Breckcnridgc, and 11. P. Ken nedy. They say he is taking things quite easy and is net at all excited. Through the day he reads aud walks around the corrideis and puts in the time better than might be expected. His friends will visit him daily and make, the time pass as quickly and pleasantly as possible. Confinement will go harder with him than it would have been for Dukes, as he has lived mostly out of doers. Telegrams ceutinue te pour in. The following was received Fi iday after noon by a piemiucnt citizen from D. G. Mehler, of Baltimore, saying : " Just re turned from the country. Cengratulate Jim and expiess our sympathy te the family ou this their dew trouble.'' ftlh FASTEST TIME ON KBCOttD. Mr. Vanderblit with Miind S. and AldlnoSur AldlneSur passes Frank Werk's VeuDle le.mi. Just why W. H. Yanderbilt brought Maud S. and Aldine from the Charter Oak park at Hartferd back home te New Yerk is new evident. He wanted te beat the record of Frank Werk's team, Edwaid and Dick SwivcIIer, and he has doue it, with something te spare. Friday afternoon Mr. Yanderbilt dieve the team out te the Gentlemen's driving park, where about ene hundred gentlemen were assembled, among them Frank Werk himself. The mares were hitched te a Brewster top buggy weighing 212 pounds. Mr. Van derbilt himself weighs 210. Maud S. didn't seem te relish the work. She acted a trifle ugly and refused te strike her gait. After five trials it occurred te Mr. Yanderbilt that she bad always made her best time with tee weights, se they were put en, and then the great trotter showed that that was all she wanted. As the two mares came down the stretch it was seen that they were trotting like one animal and a very fast one, tee. Mr. Vanderbilt nod ded his head for time' and away they weut like a flash, Mr. Vanderbilt's grey whisk ers floating back ever his shoulders as the wind whistled through them. The first quarter was made without a skip in 32, the half mile in the great time of 1.05. If they could keep up the pace what a record would be made, but that wasn't te be expected. They reached the three-quarter pest in 1.41 and started for home. Aldine here showed that she was a little weary. Yanderbilt tapped her with the whip and she forged ahead, while the queen of the turf was under a strong pull. They came down the home stretch as they had started, like, living machines, and passed under the wire in 2.151 after they had left it, the fastest double team mile en record. Werk him self and Allie Benner and Eastman and a score of old horsemen held their watches en the team. Seme made the mile in 2:15 j, ethers in 2:15J,but the majority said-2:15J and se it was recorded. Mr. Werk ad mits that the mile was trotted in 2:15. It is very doubtful whether his team can re gain their laurels. The End el Selinsgreve' Festival. At Selinsgrove, Friday was the last day of the musical festival, the greatest ever held in the state outside of Philadelphia. Dr. Perkins, the director, .says that it is tne Desc ne has ever had eutsiae et mew Yerk, Bosten, Philadelphia and Cincin natti. The selections were from the most eminent authors.' It has resulted in a permanent organization te be known as the Central Pennsylvania Musical Jubi lee association, with the following officers : president, A. W. Petter ; vice president, A. J. Pontus ; secretary, A. R. Bumiller.; corresponding secretary, J. A. Lumbard ; treasurer, T. K. Hill. Leng before the time for the evening exercises te begin hundreds could be seen passing towards the great tabernacle te witness the last performance, which is pronounced the most brilliant of the festival. Nothing but expressions of admiration is heard.net only of the four days' pregramme, but of the very satisfactory manner in which the managers have succeeded in ,thegrcat en terprise. A DOUULE EXKUDTION. Twe men Hanged ter a Murder of Which They Protested Inneceuce te the Last. The hanging of Solemou Hewitt and W. Hardee took place at Conway, e. C, F.ilay. Thrj was a large crowd present, but the lawful number only were permitted te see the execution. Geed order prevailed throughout. Beth men had slept well. Hewitt ate but little breakfast, while Hardee refused every thing but a few crackers. Hewitt was led te the scaffold at 10 o'clock. He .was calm, knelt en the scaffold and was prayed for by Rev. W. R. Alsten, a Methodist Episcopal clergyman. He declared he was leady te die and would die an in nocent death. He denied all knowledge of the crime for which he was te be hung aud also of the cutting of Ben McMillan, their fellow prisoner, at the time of their recent escape from jail. At 10:30 o'clock the cord holding the trigger was loosed and Hewitt fell and died without a strug gle in fifteen minutes. AYm. Hardee was brought upon the gal lows at 11 o'clock. He denied all knowledge of the crime for which he was te be executed; and of the cutting of Mc Millau. He was prayed for by Rev. W. R. Alsten and L. A. Clay. He made a long rambling speech, asked for a drink et water and for a chew of tobacco and time te chew it. He talked all the time, bcugiug that when he was buried the black cap might be taken off; a'se that his hands and feet might be untied. As the trap fell he exclaimed : "Oh Lord have mercy." Beth men thanked the sheriff for his kindness te them. At 11:30 the cord was again loosed and Hardee was launched into eternity. He died hard and struggled several minutes. Life was ex tinct in 10 minutes. Beth executions were quickly and well performed. Their protestations of innocence are net believed. When the bodies, in their plain pine celline, were carried out in the jail yard and exposed te the view et the crowd theie was a general rush te see them. The spectators' curiosity was seen satisfied, however, aud the bodies were borne away. Dick Flomers, a prisoner awaiting trial, who was confined in the third story of the jail, neatly effected his escape during the night by picking a hele in the wall of the jail b means of a sharp piece of stone, several nails aud a small piece of hoop iron. l'HUllllS.
