. 3JANCASTEK DAILY IKgiPiMG:! JJD3TE 14, 183. Hancaster Jntelltgencct. THURSDAY FVBNINO, JUNE 14, 1883, EUOAK POE'S COXTAGE, Where be Wrete ' The Raven." Held Under the Sheriff Hammer. New Yerk Herald. In the BpriDg of 1846 Edgar Allen Pee, with his invalid wife and his mother-in-law, moved from the noise and bustle of New Yerk life te a small cottage in the quiet village of Fordham. This cettage was sold en Saturday under foreclosure for $7,500. The plaintiff, Mr. Nelsen Strang, was the purchaser. Near the house is a Syringa, planted by the poet. It is a tall, straggling bush, in keeping with its surroundings. Bending down a lilac Mrs. Deckert broke a hand ful of the fragrant flowers, and, giving them te her visitor, sent him away, say ing: "Yeu have seen the cottage; you can hear something of its master by call ing en Mrs. Cromwell. Turning te the right at the first corner and following the shell path is another white cottage, in which Mrs. Cromwell lives " What de you want te knew about Eddie Poe?" she said; "he's been dead se long I thought he was forgotten. Well, it's mighty curious. Yeu folks think mere of him new than you did when he was alive." "Yeu knew him?" the reporter asked. " Knew Eddie Pee ? Why, 1 was the first neighbor his folks get acquainted with when they moved out here thirty seven years age. Mr. Poe found me him self in the cherry tree and he took me right ever te see his wife, peer weman.and his mether-iu-law. I used te go ever there very often." " Did you knew much of the family ?" " I knew they were mighty peer poorer than I ever was or ever expect te be. They lived hard ever there, and didn't have much that was nice. Mr. Poe was a geed man wheu he wasn't drink ing. He seemed very fend of that peer sick wife of his. Mrs. Clemru used te watch him mighty close, and I've known her te go te New Yerk twice a day te 'tend te his business just te keep him from going. She knew he would get in bad company and go te drinking again. Why, I've seen him when three men couldn't held him iu the bed. But there wasn't a better man in the world when he was sober He was very fend of flowers aud used te tramp all ever the weeds te find 'em. lie loved birds, tee, and had lets of 'em singing in his yard. He was the gicatest walker I ever saw, and used te go te White Plains 10 miles and back in a day, and many':-, the night he has wandered ever t.liese hills without a coat or a hat. " When his wife died Mr. Poe took it mighty hard. She was buried up in the old Dutch cemetery, but they afterward moved her te Baltimore, about five years age. He used te cry ever her grave every dav and kept it green with flow ers." " Yeu have some relics, I believe ?V "This is the chair he used te sit in," said the old lady, rising slowly. It's just exactly like it was when I get it, ex cept that iron strait en the arm. Some body breke it and I had it mcudcil. Ueu is h:s own Bible, and his clock is upstairs if you want te tec it." It is an ci;!it day clock, i mining yet as it has for ?G years. The chair has been in censtat ' use, but has the s.ime cane in back and seat it had when the poet .'at iu it. " I bought, the chair and clock," con tinued Mis. Cromwell, " but Mrs. Clemm gave me tin; Hible, and I'll never pait with it. I might .sell the ether things, but if yen are all going te think se much of Mr. Pee, I guess I'll have te think something of him tee." In the old Bible etic passage was found marked Jeb, vii. 1G "I loath it, I would net live always ; let me alene for my days are vanity." "Whciedid you get these flowers;'" Mrs. Cromwell asked. " Over at the cot tage, I loekeu. Yeu are all just, alike and go crazy about nothing. I wonder hew many iueic will want, te heat about Eddie Poe ?" Ueiic-ty the Hem r.illry.
