The Graduate el the Period.
N. T. Tribune.
The commencement 8easen is upon us,
and during tbe next few weeks several
hundreds of celleee graduates will be
knocking for admission into the various
professions and walks of life. It is the
custom in mauy quarters te speak of the
graduate as if he were an affliction instead
of a boen.and there are time-honored jokes
at his expense which have been paraded
every year for a quarter of a century and
which are ' being- dusted for a fresh ap
pearance new. In these annual jibes the
graduate is depicted as a conceited young
person, whose four years in college have
resulted chiefly in causing him te imbibe
the notion that whatever calling
he condescends te enter he is
certain te adorn and illuminate from
the start. That there are gradu
ates of this variety is unhappily true, but
they are the exception rather than the
rule, and their disease is moreover a harm
less one which a few months of stern
experience is certain te cure The great
body of graduates are sonsible fellows who
are net se much convinced of their own
great abilities as they are perplexed by an
inability te decide as te what path in life
thev are best fitted te enter. The college
life of te-day is se little isolated from The
world that the undergraduate has no
trouble in pcicciving that success in life
is wen by hard work and net by a di
ploma. It is a common belief, especially ameug
graduates of ten or a dozen years' standing,
that the younger generation is much in
ferior te former ones; that the colleges no
longer turn out meu of such force as ten
or a dezen years age. These forceful
graduates go back te their colleges ami
are pained by the youthful aspect of the
students there, and are surprised that
their parents allow them te go te cellege
at se immature age. This is an amiable
delusion, born of an inability te realize
the (act that the disturbed graduates are
themselves growing old. The boys in
college nowadays are no yeuuger than
their predecessors were, and they are about
the same sort of boys, tee. In many respects
we are bound te say thny arc thosupetieiH
of their predceef sers. Thov conduct tlieni
selves mere like gentlemen, except en
rare occasieus. They de less "Lazing''
and they de net de nearly se much drink
ing. Within the past ten or ufteen years
the character of college students has visi
bly improved. There is less rewdyism,
less dissipation and mera studying. Tlicie
is an abundance of boyish fun and a
saving amount of boyish foolishness, but
what of that'.' Nobody wants a boy te
be as wise as a man ; certainly no sonsible
father wants te sec his boyseptciuaturely
sedate that he can't make a geld deal el
noise en occasion and can't bear his pat t
in uproarious, wholesome, manly fun. If
some stern critics of our colh'ge boys
could have their way what an army el
prigs we should have turned loose upon
us at every commencement ?
If the boys have improved, the colleges
have improved also. Tliore have been in
recent ycais some nnwi.su experiments
made in the way of introducing new fe.i
tutcs and lelaxing the seventy of the
courses of study, but we bulicve it is a fact
that in nearly all instances these mistakes
have been tcctilied., In all the leadiug
colleges the curriculum has been steadily
advanced te higher standards. Tiie ic
quircments fur admission have been
greatly incj eased, and the ceui.se of study
enlarged and broadened. The tendency
te abandon the old classical cour.se is out
of dale, which betrajed itself in s-ome
quarters a fev years age, has been checked
and all our elder institutions have wisely
conelndod that the true couise is net te
abandon the old, but adbcie te that and
add te it whatever is best in the new. The
graduate of the period has had the benefit
of this and comes out into life se much
the better equipped for the work before
him.
