AN OLD SUBJECT.
INSTRUMENTAL MOSIO IN CHURCHES.
Tne Contreversey Besstdtns Ctrarch Btaslc
aa Old as tne Cnnieh Itself The
Trouble About It Anions the Pres
byterians. Chicago Inter-Ocean,
The heated discussion in the United
Presbyterian assembly ever the use of
instrumental music in churehes is but the
prolongation of a controversy as old al
most as the church itself. In the second
century it was the custom among the
Christians at Alexandria te accompany
singing with the llute. This was forbidden
by Clement in 190, but he compromised
en the harp, which was for many years
used instead of the llute. At the very
beginning, then, it would appear that the
discussion turned en the character of the
instrument as much as en the exclusion of
all instruments.
Towards the end of the sixth centnry
Gregery the Great absolutely prohibited
the use of instruments. It may be as
sumed that it was after this date that the
general introduction of instrumental
music occurred. IS'early every instrument
used up te G37 seems te have excited
violent prejudice in ene branch of the
church or another. In that year, accord
ing te some authorities, the organ, which
had at first been used in the theatres, was
applied te religious devotions in the
churches. Other authorities contend that
the organ was first used in church service
iu the thirteenth century. Be this as it
may, it is certain that the organ was net
regarded with favor in the Eastern
church, and that it met with vehement
opposition in sorue of the Western
cliurcli6S
By the time of the reformation organs
wcre iu very general use in the churehes,
except in Scotland and a few othei coun
tries. As these instruments had been
associated with the scrvice and pra-t'scs
of the Reman church, they wero in disre
pute with the Keferraant. Luther called
the organ an ensign or Baal ; Calvin said
that instrumental music was net litter te
ba adopted in the Christian church than
inccuse and the candlestick ; Knox spoke
contemptuously of the organ as a kist of
whistles.
Prem the first thore wero two parties in
the church of England in the introduction
el instrumental music, and iu the couve
catien held iu 1GG2, in Queen Elizabeth's
time, te settle the liturgy the retainiug of
eigaus was carried only by a casting vote.
The dissenters from the English church
would have nothing te de with organs for
many yeais. This same piojudice was
sliaicd by the orthodox Jews, who have
nev r allowed the organ or any ether in
strumeut in their synagogues.
Different branches of the Protestaut
church began very early te change ground
in their opposition te instrumental music.
The Cilvinistic church eutirely rejected
the use of instruments, but Luther, who
had spoken contemptuously of the organ,
introduced the cm-tern of having chorals
executed by instruments. After 1G10 the
nse el the organ for accompaniment be
came general, and several influences com
bined in the seventeenth century te give
the music in Protestant churches a mero
secular character. This was carried te
the extreme of playing overtures and
(lancing tunes en the organ bofero aud
after service. Abuse of the organ through
absence of proper compositions, and
though inclination in some of the Euro
pean states te get as lar as possible from
the instrumentation in the Reman chinches
led te a reaction against all instrumental
music iu churches.
But in ineduru times the tide has baeu
steadily in favor of the use of instruments
in chntches, and sacred music has become
as distinctive in character as operatic
music. With the work of such men as
Lewell Masen in this country, andKechir,
Silcher, Freeh, aud ethers in Europe,
Christian chinch music was popularized
te such an extent that the prejudices in
many denominations were worn away
without producing any friction or irrita
tion. Sect after sect surrendered, the natural
successors of the Calvinists, Cevenanters,
and Puritan, all having become enthusiasts
in the cause that has made sacred and
Sunday school music almost an art in it
self.
Nat ui-all v the fmlit has been most stub
born among the followers of Jehn Knox.
Piegiess has been slowest in Scetlaud,
where the established church has clung
tenaciously te the old idea. Iu this
country the United Presbyterian and the
Reformed Picsbyteiians have made a
stand ag.i'nist musical innovations. Last
year the question was decided in the geu
cm al assembly of the former council iu
favor of instrumental music by a small
mnjeiity. This year thu decision was re
afliimed lv an ever whelming majority,
this ni.ijerity showing a vast consarvative
and considerate spirit.
It, is intimated that the minority, beaten
in the contest, may secede and form an
alliance with the reformed Pi esby teriani,
who claim te bti the Simen pure leprcseu
tatives of the old Cevenanters.
The increased vote in favor of allowing
the use of ins! l emental music in the
churches of the United Presbyterian de
nomination is significant in that it shows
that in one of thu most conservative bodies
convictions have been modified and pre
judices have been worn away. The Qua
kers still resist all innovations se far as
instrumental music is concerned, but
within the last lew years even they have
made concessions iu the way of vocal
music.

It took the ladies of the Michigan
Women's Christian Tompemnce union a
little while te cot acqnainted, but when
the acquaintance was once formed it
ripened fast.
"Hew de you give your narae ?" asked
ene lady of another as they rorneved their
wiaps at the deer ene morning.
"I have usually written it Mrs. James
P.. Tenes."
"Did your mother name you '.Tames
P.'?" inquired the first speaker witti con
siderable emphasis. "I will never call
myself by my husband's name."
'Ner I," "Ner I," "Ner I," came from
a number of bystanders.
The little woman appeared surprised te
find herself se larirelv in the minority,
but she finally found breath aud ceurage
te say :
"Well, I suppose it docs make a differ differ
eucc what kind of man the husband is."
Uase Ingratitude etn I.nrge spider.
Mr. Jehn Saxen, a gentleman living
near Feidham, told a Sun reporter the
following story :
" I went into my barn en Wednesday
morning, and while there was attracted
bv the movements of a large black spider
A great brown licctle had wandered into
the spider's web, which was about three
feet from the ground, and in his clnrasy
efforts te free himself was seen hopelessly
entangled. Then the spider attack
ed him, bnt the beetle was se
strong that be kept his adver
sary at bay, and was rapidly demolishing
the web, Suddenly the spider ran away,
and I supposed he had gene, te seek a
place of safety. Net at all. He simply
hastened te a smaller web about a feet
above his own, and in a few seconds was
harrying back, followed bv a spider about
half as big as himself. The little spider
went below the beetle, which new had his
legs upward, and the big Bpider remained
above. Simultaneously they attacked-the
beetle, and by quick hard blows with their
legs, and, I think, with poison, seen
dispatched him. I was about te return te
the'heuse te bring my wife out te see these
two victorious friends when I was over
whelmed with amazement by the spectacle
of the large spider going down te the small
one, seizing him by the head and flinging
him out of the web."

It must be admitted that as a veto gev.
erner, Mr." Pattison is a success. Itis
quite as important te step injurious legis
latien as it is te forward that whieh is bene
ficial; and Governer Pattison has stepped
a large number of bills this session which
were false in construction, injurious in in
tent or mischievous in action. His reason
ing has been sound iu every case, and every
ene of his vetoes has been sustained by
the body in which the bill originated, and
has been approved by the people. Even
the veto of a measure se excellent in in
tent as that te euoeurage the propagation
of feed fishes was sustained because the
method of its enactment was contrary te
constitutional previsions, and the reso
