The Barber Beys Surprised at tbe Heuse or a
Germain Friend.
The noted Barber boys were capture!
rt a farm house about four miles south
west of Tripoli, a little town in Bremer
county, Iowa. During the day they had
been concealed in the barn en the farm of
August Tegtmere, a German farmer, and
at about 8 o'clock they went te the honse
and asked for supper. Henry Tegtmere, a
son of the farmer, recognized them aud
told them te wait until he went
te the house and asked his mother.
He then went into the house aud
told his father te take the children
and go te tbe neighbors and give the
alarm, while be and his mother prepared
supper. The old man did se, and as thu
Barber brothers came in the front deer he
went out the back deer te the neighbors
and told them where the boys wcre.
Several men, all of whom were Germans,
went with Tegtmere te his home. They
had no arms except one shotgun, which,
it is claimed, was net leadod. The
intention was te surround the house, and
when the boys came out te spring en thorn
and secure them before their suspicions
were aroused. This plan was baflbd
through the exeitementef one of the men,
who rushed into the house and said, " We
are going te arrest you." The Barber
boys then drew their revolvers, but as
they did se Henry Tegtmere sprang upon
Bill Barber, knocked his hand away, and
caught him by the threat. The melee
then became general, and BUI was seen
en the fleer, bat began sheeting OTer his
shoulder. Die' Barber get loose from these
who were holding him and jamped
through the window, and then began
firing at the men inside, until Henry
Pape went out of a side deer and caught
him by the arms.
By this time several of the attacking
party were wounded. Henry Karating re
ceived a ball through his body, bat still
continued te fight, and aided in tying both
ui iuu ueys wku a rope wnicu Mrs Tegt Tegt
meeo bad geno te tbe barn and procured.
Sixteen shots wero fired by the outlaws,
Bill using two 32-calibre double action
Smith fc Wessen revolvers, and Ike two
Bebin Heeds of the same calibre. The
fight was ever in a short time, aud the
boys were vanquished, bat at a fearful
cost te the captors. Of the five who at
tacked them, all were wounded. Henry
Karsting, who was shot through the body
died at 1 In the morning. Jehn H. Kar
sting was shot in the left breast, in the
hip, and in the arms. Henry Tegtmere
was snot in tne necic. rienry rape was
shot in the breasr, the ballet striking the
bone and coming out of his back. August
Tegtmere had a linger bitten and crashed.
It i3 thought that all the wounded will re
