1 r INTELLIGENCER ERIDAY JUNE 1, 183 T Lancaster Jnteltfgmcct. FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 1, 1888. SOKE FAMOUS AMERICANS. Colonel Jacob Tnompsen Tells What tie Knew About Them. Colonel Jacob Thompson has been far nishing Meriwether's Weekly with some recollection of famous men. Calhoun, lie said, always dressed neatly, neither tee mneh or tee little. Webster were : sreat coat with long tails, and invariably deco rated with large metal buttons. Clay gen erally appeared a little neglige, his cravat always tied loosely ana nowieg. uhj j. al ways considered an overrated, man. He was a hail fellow well met, fall of magnet-! iam. a. aelendid sneaker for the masses but far from the philosopher and profound. statesman that uaineun was. as an orator, n.j.itk:....l.. oil.. ixr.:.t. IIS exoaueuauuw vjpvuiuD. uiw i ig 14.1 of New Yerk, was also a great speaker. He always took a deep drink just before beginning a speech, after which be would start off with a stream of cold, polished eloquence. The fiery orators were all from the Seuth. Feete, of Mississippi, was a regular skirmisher, and made a great deal of noise in the Senate. He took all sides of all questions, and never really had much weight. His learning, how ever, was wonderful, and no man of that day was mere apt or accurate in a classical quotation. I remember his celebrated de bate with Benten, in which the latter was completely ecathed. The current number of the Century Magazine, by the way, has a very incorrect report of that same scene. Feete was pouring forth a torrent of biting invective, se scathing that Benten fairly writhed. At last he sprang up and ad. vanced as if te attack Feete. Feete, small, slim and wiry, .was net se large as Benten, but steed his ground, whereupon Benten turned and left the Senate. It was at that moment that Feete, pointing ' his long finger at the retreating tigure of the senater.repeated that famous line from Cicere against Cataline, which translated means : " 'He turns, he turns, he flies.' "Benten was a very conceited man. He possessed considerable learning and a talent for what might be called 'compila tions.' It is rather difficult te properly estimate his standing. He had bull deg pertinacity, which always gees a long way. Benten was a large man, something like Stanten. Stanten, Lincoln's secretary of war, was burly, stout, fat, and thick set. He was a very geed lawyer, but net te be compared with any of the giants who preceded him. The last thing Stan ten said te me after the secession of Seuth Carolina was, "Thompson, you are going away; noither of us knows when this thing is going te end, but I want you te premise me one thing.' "'What is it?' I asked. " 'If ever you are in a position where I can help you, I want you te call en me.' ' ' I premised and we separated. Not withstanding this voluntary assurance of geed will, there was no man in tbe North mere vindictive against me than that very Stanten. He had every reason te be frieadly te nie. We had served together in the cabinet aud it was I who first lifted him up. When I was secretary of the interior under Buchanan I controlled the judicial fund and appointed Stanten te defend the in terests of the United States in the Almeden quicksilver mine case in' California. The fee Stanten get was $25,000 and lifted him from absolute poverty te a position aud liual wealth. He forget all that, though, and was violently opposed te me all through the war. Seward was a gentle man in bearing, very dignified, aud in conversation, intelligent sembthing of the ' professor's ' face, a tall, lean map, large features, heavy eyebrows. I never met Lincoln after 'CI, but I knew him well before that date. He and I served iu the same Congress. Lincoln was always a great buffoon. He made Congress laugh and that was all. If anybody had pointed him out when he was a member of the Heuse in 1845, as a future president, the joke would have been considered worse than an April feel affair. Ore of the speeches that Lincoln made during the Mexican war was quite humorous. He was opposed te the war and went into a curious speculation as te the length of tbe line of wagons that would be required te held the money spent en the war. He estimated that se many dollars could lie gotten into a wagon ; that it would re quire se much te carry en the war, and finally, I believe. calculated that the line of wagons would be tbree miles long. " New you may raise the money te carry en that war, ' he said, ' but gentle men, where can we raise money te buy se many wagons ?' " VHOPS OF WATER. Mr. JesBrn G. Hickjjell, Ne. 612 Main Street, Cambridgeport, Mas?., writes, Apiil 27. 1833 : " 1 have been terribly alllicted for a number of years with gravel and kidncv disease. My urine contained brick-dust deposits, and ut times I could net pass my water except in drops and with great pain ; and bare Iiad te get up as many as tltteen times during the night. 1 tried several physicians ; they did me no geed, but a friend of mine, who hail used Hunt's Kemedy told me te get u bottle and try It. He had been cured et a severe case similar te mine, and that ethers had used Hunt's Kemedy in Cambridge and pronounced it a medicine el real merit. After being re peatedly urged 1 purchased a bottle, and be fore I bad used all et it 1 passed a stone as large as a pea, followed by smaller ones. I nave used In all ten bottles, and it has com pletely cured me. My. kidneys arc m excel lent condition, and for one of my age (GS) sixty-eight years, I can truly 9ay 1 led like a young man with strength anil vitality. My family use the Kemedy. and would net be without it, and never tall te recommend it ie our friends and neighbors in Cambridge and Bosten. Yeu are at liberty te use my nime in praise of the best kidney and liver medicine, Hunt's Remedy." "DIDWUSUCHS FUK HE." The above words are from Mr. Lewis Keen, Ke. 9 Highland Avenue, Madisen. Mass.. April 28, 1883. He says : "1 have been troubled ler years with kidney and liver complalnt, follow cemplalnt, follow complalnt, fellow ed by gravel, with severe pains in my back and groins. 1 hail great trouble in passing water. It being scanty, and accompanied by terrible burning, the vessel being coated with brick-dust deposit. 1 was recommended te use Hunt's Kemedy by a frond who had been completely cured of a similar trouble. I pur chased a bottle et the druggists, and com menced te improve at once. 1 have used but two bottles, and It has done wonders for mo no xnpre kidney trouble, no mere pain. It. has given me new life.and I would net he without Hunt's Remedy at any price. It is all that itis recommended te be.and I cheerfully give this testimony ler the benefit et the many sui.r. ers from kidney disease and grave 1.'' myi8-lwd4T;w&Fs.w HURT'S KEMfcDT retf mat V ru Cochran's Drug ste-, 5?. Most decidedly we can say that the stock in almost every department is better than any we ever offered. Without sensations or excitements we go steadily en providing the kinds of goods that we think must build our trade mere and mere permanently and with the faith fulness of service that must be valued mere and mere by our customers as they understand our wavs. As an evidence of appreciation it is a constant en couragement te us te have our trade grew larger and larger every month. We have certainly learned a great deal these last seven years about retail business, and it is very clear that our cus tomers were never se well served as new. JOHN WANAMAKER. Ready at 8 A. M.
