ESCAPE OF A HORSE THIEF.
He Jumps Frem h t'r Window.
It will b3 remembered that a man who
gives his name as James Nichols, at
tempted te Fell a horse in this city en
Wednesday, which was believed te have
been stolen. By telling a pitiful tale he
managed te get away at the time, bnt was
afterwards arrested at Dillerville by Wm.
Hush. Ames Williamson, of East Not
tingham, Chester county, came te town
and identified the horse as one that was
stolen from him. Yesterday Chief of
Police Deichler started with the prisoner
te Webt Chester, but the latter managed
te escape. Tbe rtery of the affair as told
by the West Chester Republican ei this
morning is interesting, and it is as fellows :
. Yesterday morning Chief of Police
Deichler, of Lancaster, accompanied by
Air. Williamson, started with the thief for
this borough, he consenting te ceme along
without a wairant. Several times en the
way down the main line tel'razer Nichols
complained of being very aiek and made
a number of visits te the water closet,
lie played his game ee well that he
entirely threw his guardians off of their
quard, and. when Chief Deichler was told
by one of the Pennsylvania railroad de
tectives that the man was only feeling
with him the chief could net believe it.
Ne attempt appears te have been made
te escape while ou the main line. After
they get en Conductor Keech's train, due
here at 11 o'clock, the mau again com
plained of sickness, and after the tiaiu
passed Kirkland went into the water closet.
.Fust before Green Hill was reached he
raised the window and jumped off the train
moving at the rate or about tweuty miles
an hour, and struck across the farm of
Emmer Green for the woodland. The
train was stepped as seen as possible, but
when inn back te the place where the fel
low parted company, they euly found his
hat and seme bleed marks ou the track.
While Chief Deichler hunted for him with
Mr. Giet-n, Mr. Williamson came into
town, .swiuu out a warrant before Justice
ltussell and also secured the services of
Constables Frame and Yeung. A very
thorough search was made, and followed
up te the vicinity of Jeseph Carter's farm,
iu West Whitelaud, where it was discoy discey
eied that a man without a hat, badly cut
iu the face, and tern pants, had asked for
something te eat and a glass of water. He
said that he had fallen from the tiain
while trying te get off, and was in a hurry
te catch a tiaiu at Glenloch, ou tbe Penn
sylvania railroad. This was the last heaid
of this daring thief. Constable Yeung
iL'ltirneif la te last evening, and tells the
following regarding his search for the
man-: lie traced Nichols from Green Hill
te the Widow Daltou's place, then te the
farm of Mrs. Lane, where he asked for a
drink of water. Mrs. Lane asked the mau
what was the matter with his face, and he
huid that he had been stealing a ride en a
train aud had hurt himself. He asked
the nearest way te Glenloch station en the
main line. The next that Constable
Yeung heard of him was at Mr. Wright's,
near Kirkland station, ou the Frazer
,, branch, aud again between the
Woodland school house and the
Pennsylvania railroad. While talk
ing te a colored woman between the
above points, the wemau suddeuly pointed
her fluger across the fluid, saying : "There
he ges, boss," but he was almost imme
diately lest behind a rise of ground, aud a
thorough search by the constable iu the
direction indicated by the wemau failed te
reveal anv trace of the thief.
Carrying eO a Drinking Fountain.
About half past 7 o'clock this morn
ing, as one of the horses belonging
te the Ne 4 fire company was being
wateicd at the drinking fountain in front
of Blickcuderfer'H store, North Queen
street, above the Neithern market, the
bridle reins became uutaugled round the
spout of the hydrant that supplies the
water te the fountain. Wheu the horse
had satisfied his thirst he turned te leave,
aud carried along with him the fountain,
which consists of a heavy cast iron basin,
pedestal and base, weighing ever 200
pounds. The herse deposited this lead of
iron en the opposite side of the street, and
it required the uuited streuth of three
men te icplace it.
False Alarm of Fire.
The alarm of iiie last evening was
caused by the stiikiug of the alarm bes
en North Mary street. It appears that a
man named Irvin had some dispute with a
carpcuter who was working for him, and
after some loud words, the carpenter raised
his hatchet as if te strike. A young lady,
who witnessed the trouble, cried out " a
fight, a fight," aud ran towards Bursk's
i.l ere, corner of Chestnut aud Mary streets,
where a key te the fire alarm box, located
at Iho intersection of these streets, is kept.
The holder of the key thought the cry was
" a lire, a fiie," and promptly struck an
alaua, which brought out engines 1 and 2
and Truck A.
Accidents.
Aleuzu Iteatn, aged 4 yeara, seu of Jehu
Keaui, residing at West King and Mary
streets, was playing around some barrels
of mackeiel last evening, at Schaeffer's
giecery steie, when one of them fell dewu
and the c.liarp part at the eud struck the
boy, cutting an ugly gash iu his threat.
Charles Brown, of West (viug, while
boxing with a friend broke his hand by
striking a deer.
Dr. Mcl'erinick attendeJ both of the
cases.
Wagen and Harness Stelen.
Night befere last a light wagon, two
sets of hamess and some bags were stolen
from the faim of Jehn F. Steinraan, iu
Drtimnre township. It is net improbable
tha- the harness and bags found by Mr.
Kamm iu the northern part of this eity
may be a part of this stolen property.
Collection of Ke venue.
Tne collection of United States revenue
iu this, the third Pennsylvania district, for
the month of May, 1883, amounted te
$175,921.77, of whien $152,349.00 were for
cigar stamps alone. This amount of tax
lepreseuts the manufacture of ever 50,
000,000 cigars, or one for every man,
woman and child in the Unitsd States.

the city for the year will be opened by the

corn, found by Jacob Kamm en his farm
iu the northern part of the city, have net
yet been claimed. The bags are marked
in red letteis with the name of "Jehn

tmsenau.

Harbisbure, Jane 1. la the Senate
this morning two of the Yanderbilt rail
road bills, relative te the amount of capital
stock per mile, were recalled from the
governor. One of them has been dropped
and the ether was amended se as te pre
vide . that the amount of bends te

shall net exceed $300,000 per mile.
The Senate judiciary committee's reso
lution te inquire into the legal relation of
the Standard oil company te the state as
te taxes, was adopted, after a communi
cation had been heard from B. F. Ge wen,
discouraging its passage en the ground
that the courts have settled the tax ques
tion. Heuse bills were passed finally as fol fel
lows : providing for the removal of indi
gent insane from almshouses te state
hospitals ; te prevent discrimination in
freights ; te continue the soldiers orphans
schools until 1890 ; the judicial appor
tionment bill; te provide for incorporation
of mutual assessment en insurance com
panies. A message was received from the gov
ernor, announcing that he had signed the
bills relating te the change of terminal
points of railroads, both known as Yan
derbilt bills.
The Heuse bill te empower bridge com
panies te contract with railroad companies
for the jeiut use of bridges, was defeated.
Iu the Howe.
The following Senate bills passed finally:
Permittiug the killing of -the English
sparrows ; making prevision for the sup.
pert of disabled firemen.
The vote by wnicn the lroe pipe eiu
was defeated was reconsidered and the bill
passed finally ; yeas 107, uays 73.
A message was received from the gover
nor, announcing that he had signed the
following bills : Fer the better security
of life and limb in cases of fire iu hotels,
etc. ; requiring preps and timbers te be
used iu mines; te prevent certain perform
anccs at theatres ; te protect bituminous
miuers in the matter -of the weight of
coal.
The Heuse had under consideration the
amendments of the Seuate te the auti auti
discriminatien bill when it adjourned.
A. Lecal Measure.
Seuater Stehmau had the bill relative te
the sentencing of prisoners recalled from
the governor for amendment in the Senate
this foreneou.
The action of the Seuate iu recalling
aud amending the Yanderbilt railroad bill
was doubtless taken because of the
governor's unwillingness te sigu a
bill giving railroads pewer of un
limited capitalization. As amended,
allowing them te capitalize at the maxi
mum amount claimed as necessary te
build a read, the measure is likely te re
ceive his approval. Eds. Intelligencer.

Butter Claims te Have Made 10,000 Voted.
The Harvard college trustees having re-
fused te give Butler the customary guber
naterial honor of LL. D., a Sun corres
pondent at Bosten says that mere than one
member alter adjournment expressed the
opinien'that Gov, Butler will be reelected
in November. One characterized the deci
sion as the greatest mistake the beard
ever made. The governor himself takes
the matter very happily, aud apparently
without porseual rancor. He is queted as
saying that the actieu of the baanl will ba
worth 10,000 votes te him. A reporter call
ed upon the governor, when the following
interview took place :
Reporter Have you heaid that the
overseers of Harvard college have voted 13
te 11 net te confer upon you the degree of
LL. D.?
Gov. Butler I have se heard.
Reporter Ofcourse you beliove this
news te be authentic ?
Gov. Butler The only reaseu I have for
net believing it is that it is put upeu the
bulletin beard of the Bosten Journal.
Reporter Assuming that it is true, what
de you think of it ?
Gov. Butler I have te thank them for
doing me a very great personal aud peliti
cal service. The atlreut intended by their
action is net upon me, but upeu the peo
ple who elected me. aud the verdict and
execution of the judgment of Harvard
college upon the acts of the people of this
commonwealth ler daring, by a large ma
jority, te cheese a governor without asking
the consent of that college, aud it only em -phasizes
what T have sumetimer. said
heretofore, that Harvaid college claims
the tight te govern the commonwealth
Having received freti uiore than ene cel,
lege a literary degree of that rank, because
of appreciation by these institutions of my
attainments as a lawyer ferf which con
sideratinn thus bestowed upon me I feel
tbe deepest sensibility the act of Har
vard would have alilud nothing te me aud
therefore I cau have no feeling be
cause of its action iu this behalf. I should
have felt veiy grateful for it. if it had been
given te me as a lawyer, but net as gov
ernor. I should have looked upeu itaa a
ceremonious matter, a compliment te the
governor of the commonwealth and the
peeple of the commonwealth, following
out a custom without .auy regard te my
attainments or fitness for the degree, al
though, as 1 happen te kuevv, I would
have beeu of perhaps two or three men
who have received it during the last twenty
years who could have read it aud transla
ted it without the aid of a diction
ary. 1 regret very much this political
action en the part of tlie college, becanse
I fear it may tend te impair its usefulness;
for it is quite possible that the poeplo of
the commonwealth may hereafter remem
ber it te the disadvantage of the college.
They may come te the conclusion te divorce
the college aud state as our fathers
divorced the church and state, and may
inquire if there is any reasen why the
property of that institution should b
exempted from the taxation which is te
burdensome upeu us, while they use the
alms of the state, se bestowed upeu thorn
for educational purposes, in au endeavor
te control the politics of the state. 15 it1",
time at last sets all things even."
Wendell Phillips says of the custom of
conferring degrees npen governers: "If
the custom is a bad one, let it be chauged
at some future time. But net new, wheu
ove'rprra"n will see that it is only the im
potent attempt of a defeated faction te
insult a successful rival."
