Bew She Succeeded la Her Bnslneaa, Sought te Alienate tae Snfferlaics et Humanity. St. Leuis tilobe-Demecrat. la the death of LydUr Pinkham the country has lest one of its meat familiar and pervasive influences. She was better known than Susan B. Antheny, or the Sweet Singer of Michigan ; and as can hardly be said of these two noted and perennial characters, her face was her fortune. She gathered in $300,000 a year, it is atated, mainly en account of her pic tured visage for it is quite safe te assume that, however meritorious her medicines may have been, it was her candid and benignant countenance looking forth from se many newspapers which persuaded people te buy. Without that picture the physie which it specified and commended would have been only as the thousand and one patent nostrums which the world never steps te notice ; but -with such a face framed in above the ordinary testi monials as a guarantee of geed faith, there was no such thing as overlooking the fact or resisting the impression. Lydia seemed se guileless and compassionate, and her advertisement se surely touched some symptomatic point among the reader's miscellaneous internal discords. " There is a garden in her face," says an old song, and a recent writer declares the expression te be a choice stroke en ths part of the poet wishing te sum up what he saw iu his lady's countenance, " inclusive of the roses, the lilies, and the cherries ripe." 1'he face of the late lamented Lydia had. this betanicai quality only tlte suggestion, was mere that of ilowen; that meaat, business and cherries that had been picked aud sent te market. It was a face peculiarly adapted te the drug trade, and te the process of coaxing people te want medicine. Ouecenld net survey its placid and gracious . outline and fail te be convinced that he ought te buy what it blessed with its approval afp told him whet e te find. Ne wonders ie took iu money faster than a gas cenipaiiK Such a face, beaming and insisting Hkap vision of ene's own mother in a memory of boyhood's happy days, would sell any kind of medicine, sickness or no sickness. There was mero than a garden in Lydia' s countenance ; it readied out, se te speak, and took iu all the contiguous real estate, making it fertile and thick with blossoms. Other venders of proprietary specifics have tried the facial expedient in advertis ing from time te time, but the effect has been uniformly bungling aud unprofitable. The ordinary countenance employed te inspire confidence in a given pill, planter, or liniment is mere likely te affect the ob server with a sensation akin te that which succeeds ever indulgence in green liuit, and thus te prejudice him against the thing past, all argument or entreaty. That is where the deceased Lydia had the sinch en all imitators and competitors. . Her face was made for her business rather than her business for her face. It had a distinctly pharmaceutical cast, as we have pointed out. All the features of it met and'bleudcd in one common assurance that whatever might be said about patent umd iciucK, here was somethiug that no family could afford te be without, evon though bread might be scarce and the furniture mortgaged te secure the current mouth's rent. Where that false was niauifest, in credulity and disputation shrank back ro re ro pteached and ashamed. There was neth iu for it but te ask the price, give up the money, and take the medicine. This face of the dead 'and gene Lydia could net be called a handsome one. There are ptettier faces in plenty en perfumery bottles, lily white boxes, aud packages of smekiug tobacco. But every lineament of it besnoke siucerity, sympathy, aud a kitidly intercst in the aches, gripes, and. twinges of humamty. Its habitual aud distinct marked expression was fce se rene, se amicable, se bountiful tbat it scetned te fulfil Emersen's notion of a face that coolers a perpetual favor upon the world by simply being iu and of it. There was a touch of sadness that implied experience and a heart acquainted with the work of alleviating distress. This was much belter than the insinuating smile that characterizes the face of the young lady with the luxuriaut bead el hair who solicits patronage for the "mag nolia balm," or the indefatigable grin which distends the mouth of the frequent female whose countenance is associated with the advertisements of "fragrant se zoileut." Lydia finderstoed the difficult ai t of sitting for a' picture. It will be many a day, no deub't, before we leek upon another such face. Nature is urovekinglv economical in the matter of adaptiug faces te particular uses. The attisticscuse of harmony aud suitability is daily irritated in this respect by coming iu contact with the wrong faces where the right ones ought te be. We are continu ally scorns the faces of butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers where we should find these of statesmen, poets and thoelog ical students. There are pugilists who have the ceuntenances cf endowers of hospitals and art schools, just as there are bank presidents and judges en the bench who have the countenances of pawn brokers and country justices of the peace. We have even known able editors who labored uuder the disadvantage of being obliged te carry faces around with them which really belonged te'bartenders. The visage of the departed Lydia, however, was wholly free from this common anach anach reuistie condition. It was a herald that did net have te be interpreted by centrsS ries ; it never adected the spectator witu an unpleasant feeling that it was out tf place, or at all iu need of apology or ex planation ; it was as clearly authentic and self-justifying as the multiplication table or the star siuutrled banner. Lydia her self has ceased from out the scheme of muudane affairs, beiug mortal like the herbs and roots of which her- remedies were compounded j but the recollection of that face is sure ' te linger iu the public mind se leut: as the public stomach shall continue te be agitated by patent citirs. medi It Kay Comore America. Pall Mall Gazette. Majer General A. Jenkins writes : " As ene1 of these interested in Welsh education, I beg leave that a foreign priuce, the duke of Mantua and Meutferrat, 170 years age left a sum of money for educational pur poses, which has new reached 750,000. The tiustees of this fund, feeling that the intentions of the founders have been tee long neglected, are new most anxiens tee utilize it aa intended, by establishing a university and academy of arts with museum and picture gallery attached. They already possess a large collection of pictures and museums of natural history aud art, with a separate fund for their maintenance, and for the erection of a building suitable te contain them. It is inteuded tbat the university shall have a large free foundation. Ne pecuniary as sistauce will be required en account of the university from tbe public. As yet no country has been selected in which te set tle the university. Invitations te settle it in Italy, Hungary and the United States have been made te the trustees, and I am informed that dele gates from these countries will attend a meeting of the trustees in Excelsior hall in Jane next te advocate the interests of these countries, when the question as te where the university is te be lo cated will be discussed. The trus tees, however, who mostly reside in England, incline te the British Isles. Wales has been suggested te them as being greatly in need of a university. This suggestion has been most favorably re ceived, and is new being considered by them ; but they desire te ascertain the wishes of the Welsh en the subject, and want information as te site, as none of the trustees have any practical knowledge of Wales.
