" ITS TVUSTV-Elt.rt4 ANNIVERSARY A Lui-ke AM'n-l)l:tUf An Animated Scene Or : vcnHt' Lecture llelere l lie Society. "With pei haps morn than the usual ac tivity and eagerness te attend another anniversary of the literary societies of Millensville uei mal school, a great crowd collected at the buildings, and coon thronged the chapel last evening te wit Hess the celebration of the twenty-eighth auniveifcary of the Page literary society. Jlanv citizens were in attendance from Laccaster.the street cars being overflowed, while ethers, of no small number, took ad vantage of the occasion te enjoy a mere delightful time by using their private con veyances. The balmy air, the beautiful nccnery along the toad and the One stietches et nature's pictures in the distance made the trip, even te these packed into the street cars like sardines in a box, a meat enjoyable one. Befere the commencement of the exercises a gieat crowd of young centlenicu and pretty girl students, aud ether pretty girls as well, made :m animated and handsome picture a they strolled ever the line campus and speculated upon the successes of the anni versary, and wondered why iu the world that horrid Legislature couldn't step its noise just ene night and let the previously expected senators lend, if possible, dignity aud attractiveness te the occasion by their handsome presences. Tiie chapel began filling up long ere the hour of commence ment ami before that time had come was completely filled, standing room being at mere than a premium. Promptly at eight o'clock the members of the Page society filed into the chapel and took the seats reserved for them up front, with the society's color bine iu conspicuous position. The red badge of the Nermal was also seen with gecd effect, all the geiieieus rivalry of the two capable organizations having vanished, as en all these occasions, aud left iusteail most ro re ro eipiocative wishes of success. Opening Exerciser. The president, Sir. Isaac S. Geist, of Marietta, and the secretary, Miss Eliza beth Gilbert, of Norristown, took their seats en the platform, en a table cu which were placed several baskets of handsome llewers, te ihe strains of a selection of music rendeicd by Tayler's orchestra. Ilev. .T. M. Wheeler, Millersville, le livered a prayer, aud the prosident then when they abandoned their stupid ways, whila the only great mis take such men ever made was that they did net take this 6tep earlier. Many amusing aaecdetes of much interest were told by the speaker te show from what lowly positions great men have and will come. He once saw standing at a window of the Press building ia Philadcl. phia the late Cel. Ferney aud a United States senator. They were looking down into the crowded street below and the sen ator, turning te Ferney, suddenly asked ; Where are the leaders of our country te come from?" and the genial Ferney, without a moment's thought, replied : " Why, out of the mud." Ferney was right, said the speaker. The world now adays rings with the applause of men whose childhoods are enveloped in pov erty and ignorance. Coepar, Vanderbilt, Gould, Charles O'Connor, James Watsen, Webb and Dr. Jehn Hall all came into prominence and honor without the advantages the youth of te day possess. Cyrus Field and Asa Packer, whose uame has become synonymous of honesty and integrity, the speaker said, were instanced as such. Mr. Everett's lecture abounded in fine anecdotes illustrative of thosuccss thesuccss es or strong and persistent individuals, aud was full of thought and of much iu terest. He closed amid great applause. Music Vecal sole O Luce l)i Quest' Anima Miss Marie Clese. Miss Cleudenning then read a couple of fine selections and highly pleased the audi ence. After music and benediction, the an niversary was ever, having proved te all that it was one of the most successful and interesting that has ever been given. ,rfisn ilm salutatory address, The speaker begau by sayiug that the occasion of this anuiversary calls feitii memories fraught with mauy p'.casaut leeliugs. lie then spoke of the incipiency or tberp.ig3 society mera than a quarter of a century age. He traeed brieily the rariyi.tiugg.es of the organization, anil mentioned the many members who have j'one out from the school and have bacorae brii'ht lights in the varied vocations of lire.' n then extended a hearty welcome te the sister seciety, the audience aud te Music Lustspiel overture Keler IleU Orchestra. l'ape Oration. Page oration." The Individual' Jesse II. Michcner, Ashland, Pa. Taking the nations as ene we lese the individual. Political economists present the world as a balauee sheet or stocks and wealth, pi.ie nn,,nr.iii7.at.'tnn that cains and losses are being equaled seems te be a philose nhical deduction. What persons gain or lese may make no gain or less te the state, but does it net make a less te the individ- j ual .' The truth is, seciety has had an i absolute less in evcry individual who does net de as he cau . Is net sell conquest me gwat cenque.-vt of life, and is it net in accordance with that divine command, knew thyself.' What ever evil ene may de itia net dene alone te himself. Preach iu from the housetops may boueiit the world if one is consecrated te the work, but it is well te discover whether it is well for self. Wc must aid te seethe and heal. The most geueieus lire gains most or what is geed. The speaker then noted instances or gieat men who had done great achieve " nient as individuals. This idea or indi viduality is the idea of rcpublicau govern ment Such a government is a well founded one. Political misdoings were made a subject of thought, and en which the speaker rem irked that we da wrong te bl.nuj the party for cor cer cor mptien ; it is the fault always of the individuals. Iu the school system that which pievides for one and all is the best. The work or the old .school teacher was net wrong ; he taught as an individual. Yet all are net of equal rank. ( 'emmand i.i iiei.ii iiivun te some, but net te all. Franklin, Byren, Mahemut, who gave impetus or wealth te their people, weie instances as meu who weie individuals te emmand. The coucentialiou or wealth making grasping monopolies was then t-eercd by the speaker, who thought that corporations were net wholly inimical te the geed or the government, bur they can go tee far and intiinge en the lights of the eeple. . Music Wait z Die Grafensteiner, Kix R3r. Reading Miss Lizzie P. (Jlendenuiug, Philadelphia. This lady lead a very touching selection with consummate effect, spleudid enunciation and with exquisite pathos. She was awarded with a persist ent encore, te which -she geed nituredly respended, aud gave another soleotion. Music Allegaute polka Cornet sole by Killhcfer. Dr. Kvcrett'n Addrees. Honorary address "Meu who win." Rev. Or. T. T. Everett The speaker, by way of introduction, remarked that men n...iiiin:nw1i(i win" is a subject iu which the fair will ue doubt take the deepest iureie:.t. The speaker firt showed hew that v.itli all the seeming perfection or the creations of man iu this world, there ii always something te the con trary. A forest of white and beautiful pinnacles gicet the behold er, who finds himself gazing at the cathe dral at Milan ; it is a giand and noble siuht, and yet with all this there are mauy sad features about it. The shipping at Livcipnel has become of wonderful extent, and presents a varied aud multifarious ap pearance yet Liverpool mourns because she has net built her decks larger. The reverend gentleman cited several intances of human creations which, seeming without the lack of any feature te make them mere peifect, yet there are plenty of places in them te criticise. One great thing te be legretted is that we are all tee much like themau who euce invented a machine te prevent brain disorders. It consisted of clockwork, placed in the hat and made te revolve. He induced a friend te try it en, who in a short time found his hair caught iu its wheels and taken completely oft' his head lie was one of these visionary people whethiuk of performing the most impossible things. Yet it must be i cmcmbei cd that these who have achieved success have at first been called visional ics. These individuals who have given the world its thousand and one won ders have all been put under the terra visionaries at the start. But the deep and grand things of the world are net con ceived and effected by the idle brains of sluggards. They have been secured by these who have been hard working, and assiduous ; they are the men who have started low down aud have pushed their way forward into potency and renewu. The speaker then showed hew the world's celebrities have achieved great success aud honors by persistent labor, ana alter com ing from the lowest positions. Many of the successful men whom we read about were very stupid in their youth, and who showed no precocity whatever. The ques tion is, hew did these dunces win success ? Why, easy enough.
