FRIDAY. MAY ly. Iss3. .k-Wl- I. Sfl r i - s lancastet Intelligent;. FRIDAY BVBWINO, MAY 18. 1883. CHINESE BADLY BEATEN. Tbalr Cibp Bureed te the Oreand, and a Kamber of Tbem serieurt j Injured. A dianateh from Victeria, B. C, says : Accounts from the mainland state that the conduct of the men who recently at tacked the Chinese was cowardly and brntal. The white men, who had an altercation with the Chinese, beat them off with pick-handles. At night, when the Chinese were in bed, in their houses, their camp was attacked by a crowd of white men armed with clubs, with which they struck the Chinese as they rushed out of their cabins in the dark. Several were knocked down and some were unmercifully beaten. A geed many escaped, but nine were left en the ground for dead, The mob then hastily set fire te the house and decamped. As seen as the white men left some of the Chinese hastened back te their camp and-tried te put out the lire. But no water being at band they were un successful, and everything was burned. At daylight they gathered up the wounded and found that one man was speechless. He died at 5 o'clock in the morning. The Chinese sent te Lytten for wagons te bring the murdered man and the wounded te town. There being no white doctor willing te assist them the Chinese doctor at Tale was sent for, who gave it as his oninien that three mere of the wounded men would die. An inquest was held, but it was found impossible te get a jury of twelve disinterested men, se strong was the feeling against them. After hearing all the evidence the jury returned a ver diet that the deceased had come te his death from violence at the hands of par ties unknown. All of the nine Chinese had frightful wounds about the head, and in one severe case the brain appeared te be oozing from the skull. The coroner found it impossible te precure a medical examination of the murdered man. There is no evidence te justify the arrest of tbc suspected parties. Fair en tbe randlng BUI. A characteristic anecdote is related of Fair in his senatorial capacity. Soen after he took his seat, he one day met Mr. Dag Rett tbe Republican congressman from Nevada, and said: "Daggett, this is a dull kind of a place. I don't hear any interest -ing talk here. I hear they are geinj te pass a funding bill. I don't much like that funding bill, because I have a bend or two myself." (He has $5,000,000 in government bends.) "Well," said Dag Dag gett,"yeur Democratic friends would insist en pressing that bill. It has taken up time, and done a geed deal of injury." "Ididn't knew that." "Oh, yes," Baid Daggett, "it comes from the Democratic side." "Well new, that is queer," said Fair; "that accounts for the singular leek Senater Kernan gave me a few minutes age." "What did Senater Kernau say?" asked Daggett." I did net knew that it was a Democratic measure, and Senater Kernan said te me that tbe funding bill was up, and what did 1 think of it. 1 1 old him I thought it was a dishonest measure and nobody but a thief would vote for it ; and I thought that Senater Kernan looked at me a little queer."
