It was while I was riding Messtnan & Miller's pony express from Walla "Walla te Millersburff, in th mines of Idaho, in the summer of 1801, that I lirst was at tracted by her wi itiugs iu the newspapers. I wrote her aud had replies. Then wheu I came down front the mountains and embarked in journalism she wrete te me and our letters grew ardent and full of alToctien. Then I mounted my herse aud rede luiudieds of miles through the val leys and ever the mountains, till I came te the sea at Pert Orford, then a iinurish ing mining town, and there first saw " Minnie Myitle." Tall, dark and striking in every respect, this first Saxen woman I had ever addressed had it all her own way at ence. She kuew nothing at all of my life, except that I was an expressman and country editor. I knew nothing at all of hers, but 1 ieuud her with her kind, oed naients. surrounded bv brothers and nis- - '-' - ters, and the pet ami spene cuiui ei ine mining and lumber camp. Iu her weedy little world there by the sea she was literally worshipped by the tough miners aud lumbermen, aud the heart of the blight and merry girl was brimming full of romance, hope and happiness. I arrived en Thursday. Ou Su'iday next we were mariird ! Oh, te what else but ruin and regret could such romantic felly lead ? Procuring a herse for her, we set out at ence te return te my pest far away ever the mountains. These mountains were then as new, aud ever will be, I reckon, crossed only by a dim, broken trail, with houses twenty and thirty miles apart for the few travelers. The first day out we came upon a great band or elk. Towards eveutng I diew a revolver and with wild delight we dashed among the frightened beasts, and fellow ing thorn quite a distance we lest our way. Aud se we had te spend our Hist night together, tiled, hungry, tli'usty, sitting under the pines en a hillside-, hold ing en te our impatient horses. We leaehrd my home all light, however, at length, after a week's ride, but. only te find that my paper had been suppieu-cd by the government, and we resolved te seek our fortunes in San Francisce. Ihifc we found neither fortune nor fiieuds in the great new city, and re returning le Oiegen I bought, a baud of cattle and we ret out with enr baby and aputyef friends and relatives te reach the new mining camp, Canyon City, in Eastern Oregon. In fact, I had gene bofeie te .spy out the laud. We fought the Indians and get miiue foothold and we selected this location for our future home. And what a ieururv was this of ours ever the Oiegen Steuas, diiviugtlte bel lowing cattle iu the narrow tiail through the dense weeds, up the steep, snowy mountains, de wu, through I he reaiing caueus ! It was wild, glorious, fresh, full of hazaid and adventure ! .Minnie had made a willow basket aud swung it te her saddle hoi u, with thu crewing and good geod goed naturcd baby inside, looked up at her, laughing, as she Icapud her horse ever the fallen legs or undo a full hand with whip aud lasso, slashing aftar the cattle. But when we descended the weeded mountains te the open plain ou the eastern side of the Sierras the ludiaus weie ready te receive us, and we almost literally had te fight our way for the next week's journey, every day and night Aud this woman was eua of the truest souls that ever saw battle. I thiuk she never, even in the hour of death, knew what fear was. She was net only a wonderful horse-wemau but very adroit iu the use of arms. She was a much bet U r shot, indeed, than myself. In our first fittle skirmish en this occasion I had taken position en a hill with a few men, while the cattle aud pack animals were eei railed by the ethers in a bight in the foothills below te prevent a stampede. Aud thus intrenched, we waited the attack from the ludiaus, who held the further point of the ridge en which I had stationed mv men. Suddenly Minuie, babe in aims, steed at my side and began te calmly discuss the situation and te pass merry remarks about the queer noises the bullets made as they flattened en the nicks about us and ghnccd evor our heads. I finally get her te go down, or, rather, premiso J te go down te camn for the better safety of the baby. Bnt in a moment she was back. She had hidden the laughing little baby in the rocks, and new, gun in hand, kept at my side till the brush was ever and the Indians beaten off. Here is one leaf from her journal, or rather, I think, her recollections of the journey, which she lef me along with her ether papers when she died : " Oue night of that jeurney l snail net seen forget. Thore had been seme fight ing ahead of ns and we knew the feo was lurking in ambush. They made a kind of fort of the freight and while we lay down in the canon, baby and I, away up en the high sharpe butte, Joaquin steed sentinel. And I say this te night in his behalf aud in his praise, that he did bravely and saved his loved ones from peril that night. That he steed en that dreary summit, a target for the loe and no one but me te taice uote of his valor steed till the morning shone radiant, steed till the night was passed. There was no world looting en te praise his courage and echo it ever the land; only the frozen stars in mystic groups far away and the slender moon, like a sword drawn te held him at bay." Reaching the mines in safety I, as de tailed iu a previous sketch, practised law, mined, fought Indians aud indeed was the busiest of men iu trying all means te get en. I planted the first orchard in all that land, pushed ahead as bard as I could and tried te he punctual and steady and thoughtful. Yet I was still bnt a lad in years. I forget le mention that I was meantime elected judge of the county aud had begun te write the "Songs of the Sierras." My life was a sober and severe one. Fer without learning, I was trying te administer the law ; without knowing new. All was strange. What availed my knowledge of woodcraft in the courts of law? The mystery of making fire by the friction of two sticks of weed, the secret of finding water in the desert by the flight of a bird, the cunning of foretelling the force of the coming winter or the depth of the show all these and the like were of no use new. If the shrewd and sharp lawyers who bullied and beat me had come into my elements I had beaten them. But I bad chosen te enter theirs and must be equal te the undertaking. Aud se it was I worked and studied as never man worked and studied before. Often I never left my office till the gray dawn, after a day of toil and a night of btudy. My health gave way aud I was indeed old and thoughtful. Well, all this you can see did net suit the merry-hearted aud spoiled child of the mines at all. Then she was net se ambitious as I was ; then she had net such a strange, wild life behind te haunt her. She became the spoiled child here that she had been at her father's and naturally grew impatient at my porsistent toil and study. But she was geed at all the time ; geed aud honest and true in all things aud in all ways ; understand that distinctly. Aud let rae say here, once for all, that no man or woman cau put a finger en any stain iu this woman's whele record of lire, se far as truth aud purity pe. But she was net happy here. Itn- patient of the dull monotony of the ex hausted mining camp and longing for the sea and the old home that almost ovor evor over huugtho Kenndiug waters, she took her two'childreu aud returned te her mother, while I sold the little home we had built and kept together, the new orchard aud laues of roses we had planted togethor, aud rcmaiued thore in the camp premising te fellow her, yet (ull of ambition new te be electcd te a place en the supreme bench of the state, and I remained aud worked en te that end ceaselessly. She had been absent from me quite a year when the convention was called aud I went te Portland, seeking the nomina tion for the place I desired. But the peer impatient lady, impulsive always aud am'rv that I should have kept se long away, had forwarded papera from her borne, hundreds of miles remote, te a lawyer here, praying for a divorce. This se put me te shame that I abandoned ray plans and in rage and disappointment formed a collusion with her lawyer te give her a pretonse of that which she professed te desire. Yet I kuew quite well that this was euly a romantic aud foolish freak that meant nothing. Hew often she has written me thatshe did this only in order te get me te ceme te her aud that she did uet dream she could be divorced unless I came te her when the action was brought. Ner could she in fact. But a court was in session, and her lawyer, who looked te me, enlv for his fee. eutercd the case, and iu about the time it takes te write it the sham decree was announced te the world, while I was sailing away for ether lands. Of eon ise the whele pitiful proceedings was as nothing, but her lawyer, new dead, get his fee And it was perhaps quite teu years before she by chance met seme oue who told her the truth. She had married, but at ence left all and came te me here. I had net hceu greatly fortunate at best. A few thousand dollars I had thrown up as a wall between myself and work, but I had grown se impatient of this moderate nnsilien in life and se I wanted te get a great fortune and return te the West that I deliberate! v .staked all in wall sireesam of ceurse lest all. I, beaten and disceur aged and broken in health, had retreated te a garret and was then again preparing te use my pen, when ene stormy night a strange woman crept up my htairs aud told me iu a wild whisper that my wife, ' Minuie Myrtle," was iu the city and must see me. And hew helpless I was te her or any one new. I had seen her form but ence for nearly a dezen yeare. And such years ! Let me net recite any of thn horrors they held in this connection ; and yet I heard from her all the time, aud while fche wrete about rae and lectured about me and did all that made my life se miserable, she did net really mean my ruin ; but thinking me strong and pros perous aud happy hhe exhausted her wit and sarcasm en me and laughed that she might net weep. But in time she drove menearly mad and I left, the country aud proposed uever te return. My publishers. Roberts Bres , of Botteu, had sent her $30 ;i mouth as regularly as the mouths came all the tuna. She was reejiving that sum nud itjrlians as much mere d'uectly from myself, as I could spare it, all the titne I was in Europe, anil she received these sums for years atter her raarriaga. But the peer, spoiled child of Pert Orford never get evor her childish love for waste ful follies aud diess aud show aud travel, and se was forever pinched aud iu debt. And new having hastily passed ever all thesu torrible years, we come te the closing chapter of this singular life. I followed the geed woman who came te me that stormy uight iu silence till we came at last te a little back room in tha top of a house, with a bed in thu centre and a doubtful lire struggling iu the grate. The geed woman turned away and left us in the room tegether The place was almost dark. She did net give me her hand, but steed befere me with ene hand heldiug en the hed-pest, a long ttme silent. " I have ceme te yen at last," she said, after awhile. ' Yeu have come te drive me from the country again." " I have come te you te die !" she said. And as she turned se that the light was ou her face I saw that it was se. And then we sat down aud had a long talk. It was our last talk. I was net very kind. Ged knows I am sorry new. She wanted most of all te Bee her little girl, whom I had taken from her and placed in the con vent school iu Canada three years befere, and it seemed te break her heart when 1 refused te send for her te ceme. By and by, however, when I premised her that she should surely bee her befere she died, she became reconciled. She talked with calm unconcern about her coming death, reminded me of my premise and told me she had brought me all her papers ; some that we had written together bofero I had learned te spell. There was a valor, a sweetness, tee, and a dig nity, a large charity iu all she said and did new in the twilight of life that wen all hearts te her entirely. My secrets she kept -till the grave closed ever her. And she never complained of anything or of any one, but was patient, resigned and perfectly fearless and tranquil te the end. But the end was uet. te near after all. When I went back te see her ene day she had geno and left no word where she could be found. Then I began te fear and doubt her premiso ; the winter wero away aud April came. Then they came te tell me, from her, that she was dying and I must keep my premise. And se I arranged for her child te come and 1 went every day te assure her that she was coming and te take her some flowers and whatever kind messages and encouragement I could. Wearily the days went by till away np in May, the month in which she was born. Then the child came and the geed people, the gentle, loving people who kept with her and cared ler and loved and pmea ner woman in her last days was very, very happy. And se Minnie Myrtle died last May here in New Yerk. When I went np te leek en her dead lace a strange fancy of hers she had had set all about the feet of the bed, where she could see them, all the flowers I had sent her, the withered ones and all. There was quite half a trunk full of papers which she had brought and intrusted te me, some, of them suggesting wonderful things, great thoughts and geed and new ; for much that she wrote and maybe this is net jnst praise was better than any writing of mine. But she lacked care and toil and sustained thought. I bought a little bit of ground in Evsrgreen cemetery, and there the hand that writes this laid the dear, tried lady te rest, forgiving and beg ing Ged te be forgiven. MKDICAL.
