The Vulture's Obituary Observations.
Rev. Dr. J. II. Dubbs In Guardian.
The Nightingale was dead, and all the
birds of the forest had gathered te the
funeral. There was perfect silence. It
would have been a desecration for the
sweetest warbler of them all te lift up his
voice ; for even his most liquid notes
would have seemed a mockery at the grave
of Philomela.
Suddenly a hearse, creaking voice was
heard in the top of a tree. All the birds
looked up, and beheld ! a great foul vul
ture, whose eyes blazed with wrath be
cause he had net received au invitation te
the funeral.
"Who is te be buried '.'" he creaked iu
tones of contempt.
Everybody felt certain that the vulture
was aware that the nightingale was dead ;
but the birds had gentle manners, and the
weed lark, whe30 voice was sweetest,
said :
"Philomela, our most charming seug
ster, is dead, and we mourn Wcause we
shall never again listen t her voice.
Henceforth the forest wiil twin de
serted, and our best songs will but pert e te
remind these who remain of the ckarmhiy
melodies of the deparU-d."
'The vulture shrugged his &houKle.s and
replied :
"Well the nightingale w?k a prett;
geed singer, I confess; but in mvi.y ie
spects she did net occupy the b'ghest
rank. She certainly was ivt beautiful.
I am sure there is net a single bird i'.i
this assembly who lias net finer feathsMS.
A single peacock feather has m.-ie l;::mty
than all the plumage of the nightingale.
" IIew very weak she was ! While
ethers sailed above the clouds she novel
ventured te rise high above her dwelling,
ller size was contemptible Kven new I
could dispose of her remains without liud
ing enough meat en her bonus te whet my
appetite.
" Besides, her sight was net very accu
rate. I de net like te speak of myself,
but J venture te say that I can see a dead
horse at twice the distance from which it
could have been discerned by your won
derful songster.
"Even her singing, it must be confessed
was monotonous, and her range w as
limited. Her themes were commonplace,
and she dwelt by preference en subjects
which have a tendency te affect the feel
ings ; and this, you will acknowledge, is
nethicrh art. I admire Philomela, and
admit that she was a well behaved bird,
keeping out of society as became a person
of her humble condition. May she rest in
peace !"
The speech of the vulture was net with
out effect. Several foolish little sparrows
began te sneer at the departed, and evon
Imagined that one of them might possibly
be chosen te till the vacant position el
chief chorister.
Hut en old Owl, wh had been seated in
a dark corner, said, after due relleeli-ei :
" All that has been said only proves that
the nightingale was net a vulture, and ymi
may be sure that she did net wish te he.
Her song may have been commonplace,
but it added delight te our common life,
and was a bleFsiug te us all. Above all, let
us remember that then; is im one among
us who can sing as wi-ll as she did. I de
net believe that even tins uninvited miest
up yonder can equal a sii'gle one el the
strains which he has called commonplace.
He ! Mr. Vulture, will you please le.id us
in singing V"
The vulture said net a word, but sailed
away ever the tree-teps, seeking seciely in
which his critical ability might be butter
appreciated.
Meral : This fable teaches that critics
cannot always write epics.
