New fork Evening Test.
" Arc there any new fashions iu playing
cards?" said a well known manufacturer
in that line" of business, repeating the
question asked him by a reporter of the
Evening Pest. " That question can be an
swered both in the affirmative and in the
negative. The face3 of playing cards are
the same as they were in the beginning of
the century, except the use of the indica
tor and triplicate cards. A few years since
we made an effort te introduce a new style
of card, in which the figures en the face
cards were made mere like men and women
than the familiar forms se well known te
all players, but the ssheme did net work ;
our customers returned the entire let and
we lest a considerable aineuut of money. I
de net knew of any ether effort ever beiuc;
made te substitute a new style of card
aud the chances are that, if you should
lay aside a pack of cards m some mauso
leum, the man who may discover it five,
ten or fifteen centuries hence will at once
sit down with his comrades te a quiet
game of euchre or whist. We frequently
make changes in the designs en the backs
of the cards and bring out six or eight
new designs every year. The latest do de
sign is that used for the style known as
the club cards. The ilesigu is a wave pat
tern, printed from geemetrical lathe
plates. The machinery ler printing these
backs cost us $e,000 te build, but there
was a demand for this style of card which
had te be supplied. The design covers
the cutire back or the card, and is a con
tinuous line, se contrived that a private
mark could net be made en the card with
out detection, and the surface of the caid
is se highly polished that the bhghtebt in
dentation v.ill at once be manifest. These
cards are net made for clubs but the name
club cards is simply a brand.
41 The different ciubs have their cauls
inade te order. Sometimes they prepare
the designs themselves, but they generally
leave that work te us. We make ail the
cards ler the Union club, as well as for
ether clubs, net only iu this city, but
throughout the ceuutiv and iu Eujdaud.
The Union club has its monogram en each
corner en the back of their cards, and it
requires a coed many packs iu the course
of a year. It is a i ule never te use a pack t
of cauls at inore than one sitting. It does
net matter whether the play continues 10
minutes or 10 benis. Each party when
they sit down are supplied with a new
uack and when they emit playing the pack
is put away aud is net again used m the
club room. It is either sold te seme mem
ber of the club for his private use or 10
turned te us te be destroyed and ma:!e
into new pulp."
" Thcre are probably from fifteen te
f-ighteeu different braudsef playing cauls
in the market, ianging iifptice from 2 te
$9 per dozen packs. The cheapest and
probably the most widely known brand is
the Stcambe.it.' These aid made of tw.
sheets of cotton paper glued lege'her, and
de net have the snap and lile that the
liner qualities have. The demand for
these cards ceme principally from the
East and from California. Thcj aie
made iu two styles double heads and
MiigUi hjads. The double heads arc
sold aluies!, cntucSy in the Kist,
while the tradu in C.dileniia almost
invariably :.sk for 3ingle heads.
'This'biand waae named beotuse it
was made te meet the great call for a
cheap carJ en the Western steamboats in
the early days of nteam navigation en the
Ohie and Mississippi. They are gotten
up aud can 1 sold at a profit of twenty
Jive cents a pack. . Very often during a
trip from New Orleans te St. Leuis or te
Cincinnati the passengers en the beat,
would in.e up six giess or packs of cards
The cards are msde with star or plaid
backs and ate wft and have no life. Still,
a I said, thcu: is a great demand for
them. The next .saleable brand of card is
the Mrts'til caul, which is ntada of cotton
aud linen paper. The cotteu makes it
smooth and t.eft, s. thai it will take a
very line polish, aud the linen gives it
snap and me. ine.-e casus am uuj
with the triplicate face caul and also the
indicator face, and the demand for them
comes principally from the Southwest and
the Eastern stales. The highest, priced
eat ds at e made with gilt edges, and these
are sold chiefly for private use."

did net intoxicate themselves, dined te
the number of ten, and placed an interval
of four hours between their meals.
Heat was served, in Reme, en portable
furnaces, and it is yet se served in the
north of Europe.
The Remans had ambulant kitchens,
which, followed them in their travels. The
old king of Prussia imitated them in this;
his kitchen followed him everywhere.
In summer the Remans cause streams of
fresh and limpid water te run at the bases
of the walls of their balconies.
As for us, we ewe the flavor of our
cuisine te the spices of America, the cin
namon of Ceylon, the venilla of Mexico,
the nutmegs of the Malacca Islands, the
black pepper of Java, the capers of Bar
bary, the red pepper of the Carribean Isles,
etc.
The ancients spiced and flavored with
perpermint, saffron, exymel, old cheese
and peanuts, which Vitellius brenght back
from Syria.
Charlemagne had some one read te him
during dinner a geed custom when one is
alone. It was habitually from a religious
book or from historical annals. He loved
te listen te the soft voices of his daughters
who were famed for their beauty and
gentleness. Thus they soethod him with
'music. The first organ that appeared in
Prance was brought from the East for his
dining hall.
The custom of formulating toasts comes
from the North of Europe.
All gourmands have eaten at regular
hours ; without that one is sure of noth
ing, for the stomach would net come te
the work. The hour the important thing
for the cook should be fixed with preci
sion ; it should be fatal te whoever delays
it.
Jay, one of the most brilliant pupils of
the great Careme, refused the position of
chief ferthecreat Duke of Wellington,
with 1,000 francs increase of salary an
impei tant grade in the household ; the
cause of that refusal was the fact that his
grace had dinner served one hour before
going te the table,
Careme ate very little or drank little or
none ; he talked much and well. Brillat
Savarin ate copiously and badly ; he
chose little, conversed heavily, without
auy sparkle in the eye, and grew absorbed
toward the end of a meal.
Careme was brilliant, light and flashing.
At most he would drink but a little cham
pagne. Cambaceres ate largely and of heavy
feed. His mind, which was se luminous
iu the councils of state, was thiek at
table, and particularly se at the close of a
dinner.
