We find in the April number of the
Agricultural Review an elaborate essay en
free trade, written by a gentleman who
hails from the state of Iowa, and who
seems te labor under the delusion that the
principal markets for the products of
western agriculture is te be found in
Europe, and this in face of the fact that
our experts of cereals amount te less than
ten per cent., while the home consumption
is fully ninety per cent ! In the courso-ef
his labored eflert te preve this, he asserts
and assumes as a fact that the Eastern
states, meaning thereby the New England
and Middle states, are very nearly self
sustaining with tegard te. feed. New,
any such statement as this is fcimply
based en ignorance. The state of New
Yerk is net only net self-sustaining, but
depends upon the West for fully four
fifths of her brcadstulle, and mere than
half of the meat she consumes, while the
case of New England is still stronger.
Here in Pennsylvania, we de, it is true,
niake a much better show than this, but
our case is gradually becoming assimilated
te that of New Yerk, for the sirnple and
obvious reason that the Western competi
tion against us is absolutely overwhelm
ing. The 1-eacli Prospects.
The tone of lettcrs received within a few
days from "peach centres" iu Delaware
and Maryland, is in the highest degrce fa fa fa
vorable for one of the largest yields of
peaches ever grown. Everything will de
pend, however, upon the absence of sharp,
damaging frosts from this time out. The
only ether fear new is that from the great
superfluity of bads the trees may be se
crowded as te interfere with the size, and
as the thinning-out the fruit would be a
herculean work where .the plantations are
extensive, it would probably net pay, and
we believe it is seldom dene. A farmer
in. the adjoining county of Montgomery
told us the ether day that he raised last
year sixty bushels of as line peaches, both"
in size aud quality, as he tow during the
whole of last year's past season, which he
sold iu the neighboring towns at a geed
price, thns bearing out what wc have re
peatedly said, that as geed crops of peach
es can be grown in Pennsylvania as any
whete else.
Horsesheeing at Kxmbltleim
Wc desire again te call the attention of
our agricultural societies proposing te
held exhibitions the- ensuing autumn, te
the effeiiug of a geed, solid premium for
the best horsesheeing. We are very cer
tain that if our suggestions, presented
some weeks age, were te be carried out
genet ally by our societies, it would exert a
vast influcuce upon skillfulness in shoeing,
aud would secure the usefulness, if net
save the lives, el thousands of horses
every year. We are pleased te .ee that a
number of our leadiug agricultuial as wJ!
as ether journals have endorsed our le
commendation by publishing the article te
which we allude, which was condensed as
much as possible in euler that it would
.save space and thus induce its general
publication. We teler te it again that it
may net be overlooked in making up the
lists of prizes which are new being pre
pared
Tomatoes and Egg-plants.
While tomato plaflis can be set out any
time new, if they ate protected at nights
ami whenever there may likely be a Jiest,
the egg-plant should uet be set out before
the last week in May, aud then should be
pietected during cool nights. They arc
one of the most difficult vegetables te
grew, and require at all times particular
care and attcutien. The space ccaupied
by the toots being very small, they icquire
the richest soil and heavy manuring from
the barnyard. Beth plants should be well
mulched. Te aitbrd them curtain pretec
lien, prepare boxes f rough half iuch
beaids, about ten inches wide at bottom
and live or six iuches at top, from twelve
te fifteen iuches high, tnade of four pieces,
aud open at top, as there need be no fear
of the fro .disturbing the plauts through
this aperture. With care iu stewing them
away in the dry when uet needed, they
will last fifteen te tweuty years, aud are a
sure protection for any tender plants.
Clear Up ami Cleanfte Veur l'reintses.
The warm weather is here, and it be
hooves every citizen te cleanse his prem
ises of a.11 offeusive matter iu order that
they may become perfectly cle.'u and
healthy. There is no doubt at all that a
great deal of the sickness visiting families
proceeds from filthy cellars, sinks, yards,
outhouses, styes, &c. These things are
ueglected by many as are ether duties
irem puie thoughtlessness, while ethers
never dream of paying any attention te
them, net thinking it worth while. Thcre
are seveial remedies ler this bad, un
healthy condition of things that can be
easily applied. The first is te put ene
pint of the liquor of chloride el ziae in
one bucketful of water, and one pound et
chloride of lime iu auether bucketful et'
water, add and spriukle ever decayed
vegotable matter. Fer this purpese
nothing surpasses it ; indeed, it is a per
feet deodorizer. The second is te take
four pounds of sulphate of iron or cop
peras and disselve it iu a bucketful of
water. This will in most cases preve a
sure remedy in destroying all offensive
odors. The third is te take simple chle
lido of iime and spr'nkle in damp cellar?,
ever outside heaps of filth, dirty yards,
&c. Before this, however, is dene, let
thcre be a general clcaning-up, removal
of everything offensive or nasty, te a place
whence no harm can arise. Tiiese chem
icals can be purchased at the druggists,
and as prices go are net dear.
The labor of cleansing one's premises by
cither one of these remedies is trifling, and
the expense is net worth mentioning. If
it were ten times greater, both the labor
aud expense should be willingly incurred.
But perhaps the best proccdure is te
cleanse your cellars, yards, outhouses,
styes, &c., systematically. Especially
should the cellars, sinks, and everything
about the house be kept free of all elTen
sivcuess at all times. Cellars should be
thoroughly cleaned eat twice a year and
whitewashed once. Sinks about kitchens
should be particularly attended te by ence
a week pouring into the pipes a quantity
of boiling water. Privies can be rendered
completely inoffensive by the application
of fresh earth from time te time.
Protect the Partridge.
There was a meeting of horticulturists
held some time .since in the West, at which
the question of preserving paitridges upon
our farms aud in our gardens te destroy
insects aud vermin generally was presented
and facts given te show that they are very
destructive during the growing seasons of
the enemies of our plants, flowers, fruits
and graiu. One speaker said that in view
of these services the partridge ought te be
pretected against, the hunter, and-the
farmer and his boys as well : that no bird
is mere harmless and nene mere useful ;
that te sheet of te tiap it for stewing,
broiling or making potpies, was very
much te be deplored and should be pre
vented if possible ; and that it was the
only bird that remained with as through
the winter, after being deserted by all
ethers. But this is easier said than done.
Human nature, we are a little apprehen
sive, will need a trifle of change and edu
cating before this partridge millenium ar
rives. Te show, however, 7iew useful this beau
tiful and harmless domestic bird is, it was
at the same time stated that a fleck of
partridges were seen running along the
rows of corn just sprouting, and seeing
them engaged at something whieh was be
lieved te be pulling up the young plants,
one of them was killed and its "crop"
examined, which was found te contain one
cutworm, 21 striped bugs, and ever 100
chinch bugs ! Anether related that he
had adopted measures te protect the bird,
and that they had become se nnmereus
aud se tame that hundreds of them, after
falls of snow, could be seen in his barnyard
with the fowls where they were fed. As
a result of their presence upon the prem
ises, his wheat crops were usually abund
ant, while in many ether places net far off
the chinch bug and ether insects had de
stroyed half the crop.
This suggestion is worthy the considera
tion of farmers, and if practicable it ought
te be adopted. Of course, when the birds
had greatly multiplied there could be no
objection in trapping some for domestic
consumption, or they might tee numerous
te be altogether advantageous.

It was raining heavily a day or two age
an April shower in the afternoon of a
fair day threatening te project itself into
the night. The departments were just
beginning te disgerge the great slices of
humanity that they had swallowed in the
morning. I was standing by ene of the
great piles as the men and women began
te conie out slowly at the first. The first
two or three, warned by experience, had
umbrellas under which they went jogging,
slowly home at a clerkly rate. The fourth
was a woman in widow's clothing rather
shabby clothing which had been worn a
long time. She was thin, shrunken, gray
and pale, and scorned broken with aweight
of bad years, a sad memory of better days.
The carriage of the secretary was rolling
te and fro before the big entracce of the
big building. His gray whiskered col
ored coachman with difficulty restrained
his blooded horses. The secretary was
signing his name a great many times ou a

lefty, velvety office He might be out for
an hour. Just as the ghostly widow

weman came down td the sidewalk with

her address, fortunately near at hand, and
sauk back luxuriously en the soft cushions
of the haudsome carriage. Taking all the
risks, the fine old fellow drove carefully
yet quickly te the shabby bearding house,
aud was back long before the secretary was
ready for him. I wenid never have known
had the loyal old servant net told me, that
the widow's husbaud was a general who
was famous when the secretary was un
known, although I could have been quite
sttru that old Themas drove her carriage
when she had one.

There are dangerous cennterlcits In circu
lation purporting te be " Walnut Leat Hair
Restorer." The strongest evidence of Its great
value is the lact that parties knewlnglts great
cfllcacy try te imitate it. Each bottle of the
genuine has a fac simile of a walnut leat
blown In the glass : and a Green Leat en the
outside wrapper. The " Ke3terer " is as harm
less as water, while it possesses all properties
necessary te restore Hie, vigor, growth and
color te the hair. Purchase only trem respon
sible parlies. Ask your druggist for It. Each
bottle Is warranted. JOHNSON. nOLLOWAY
