LANCASTER DAILY INTEIJilGENGEB, TKtJBSDAY, APRIL 19 183. i h it Lancaster 3nteiltgencct. THURSDAY EVENING, APBIL 10. 1883 FAKBl MUTES. GLOimrO, UWJMKWMMM,te Enemies of tne Currant. Germantown Telegraph. There are two the Werm and the Berer. The first, which has latterly be come very prevalent and destructive in denuding the bushes of their leaves, makes its attack seen after the leaves are of full size. The insect begins itS work by laying the eggs seen after the leaves appear. The best remedy, as we have for two or three vcars recommended, is the white hellebore, in the powdered state which should be dissolved in het water, a teasyoenfui of the powder te an ordinary bucket of water and applied with a sprink ler. Seme sift the powder ever the bushes in the morning when the dew ib upon them ; but the dust is liable te be inhaled, and if it is, it produces distressing sneez ing. A second application may be neces sary. The borer is a different insect, and works in the stem, passing through the pith from bottom te top. The moths - appear early in June; the eggs seen hatch, and the worm at once bores through the weed te the centre, feeding as it pro gresses upon the pith. Its presence in the stem may be known by the yellowish appearance of the leaves. The best reme dy is te sprinkle the bushes as Boen as the moth makes its advent, with whale oil soap and water, about a pound of the soap te lour or five gallons of water, repeating it once or twice. The currant worm does its work rapidly in censumiug the leaves, and they must be attacked the moment they snow them selves. A siugle day's operations, un checked, will play havoc A plentiful supply of coal ashes, sieved, may also dis lodge them. They multiply rapidly, and when net all disposed of, enough may re main te de much damage. Disease Among Livestock. Like iti the human race, epidemics among livestock are frequent and destructive. They come nobody knows hew or whence; and pass away nobody can tell why. His tory records se many of these, and we all remember enough et them, that it is use less te dilate up'jn them. This being se, it is hardly te be expected that beasts will escape similar visitations. Yet some peo ple seem te expect this, for when an epi demic breaks out among the beasts of the Geld it produces about as much commo tion in a community as the prevalence of cholera among bipeds. Every sort of re re re Bource is had te counteract it. County conventions are held ; legislatures ap point commissioners te investigate the distemper and iind out a remedy or a pre ventative ; impracticable laws are de manded, and the whole agricultural com munity effervesces as te what is te he done for their safety. Suddenly the cpi dctnie vanishes ; the discussion as te the 'causes which produced it, filling news papers and periodicals with a mass of speculation which net ene person in a hundred ever reads, as suddenly comcste an end. All seem te be willing te let by gones be bygones and drop, nem. con., the all absorbing question. In the common course of things we must expect te be visited by these epidem ic8. Horses, cattle, sheep and. swine, according te their nature, will get sick and die, entailing a less which all who own beasts must submit te. Aud when an opidemie assails them, it is useless te dis cuss whether it came from abroad or is indigenous, or where it originally ap peared, llic lirst consideration should be te study its diagnosis and apply a remedy. It must be remembered that there are losses aud misfortunes in ever.v business. Untoward circumstances cannot at all times be avoided or controlled. Field mulching, Though this heading may leek rather formidable it is really us simple as possible iu carrying out. It is net a new sugges tion new made for the first time in these columns, for it has been leferred te re peatedly as a matter that is deserving of mere attention than it generally receives. Even when lirst mentioned by us it was net an original idea, inasmuch as our at at U'ntieu was ealled te it while visiting one of the best conducted farms in a neigh neigh Ijeiiiig county. It is this: Iu removing the hay from the field, that portion known as rakiugs should be allowed te remain for two reasons : One is that it will net pay for the labor iu gathering up ; the ether that it does pay, and twice ever, in being scattered ever the field, and acting as ti mulclt te the exposed roots of the stubble. Tucso rakings keep the roots cool and moist and will add largely te next year's yield of timothy or orchard grass as the case may be. Many lirst class farmers pursue this method at all times, but there are se many who de net that we regard it as worth while te remiud them of the advantages of it, and ask them te give it a trial. Muck fur Suncly Hella. It is encouraging te see that in some portions of the southern states, where they are tardy in adopting new methods of culture or hints leading te experiments, they are beginning te find out that muck hauled upon sandy soils acts almost as effectively as a dressing of manure, while it is far mero lasting, and greatly adds te its preductivness. This, however, is no new discovery. We recommended it, as did correspondents, as long as thirty years age, and peiuted out instances in which muck was applied te sandy soils that had been attended with marked success. Even pure clay hauled upon very light 6eils and intermingled therewith by the simple operation of cultivation, has been followed by excellent results, the land increasing its crops fully one-half. Where clay or muck is as convenient of transportation as manure, there is no question that its application as here suggested would. prove of the most decided advantage. Even in gardens, where the soil has become ex hausted by long continued cultivation, a dressing of clay is far better than a oeat of the best manure. Ceal ashes, when applied te very compact soil, acting in a reverse order, will cause it te be mere friable, and in this way which we believe te be the only way are these ashes of any benefit. Silver creek, N. Y., Feb. 6, 1880. Gekts : I have becu very low and have tried everything, te no udvantege. I heard our Hep Bitters recommended by se many and 1 concluded te give them a trial.
