They bcre roe Hern my raffing sire, And made me et the city's choir Which sings 1" tree air only; And here since then I've patient hung, Silent, untouched : but, being swung. Giving my voice with lien tongue tongue Alene, but never lonely. The hermit or the bellry here, Celled In the upper atmosphere, I speak In accents stern and clear Te all the listening people : AVlth none my speech te check or in;ir. Sending my uttcnince near and liir. With sonorous clang and sudden Jar, 1 shake the slender steeple. I ring the chlmea for the bridal day ; I tell when the dead are borne away ; 1 clang when the red flames rise and play On crackling reef and ratter ; 1 tell the hours ler the steady clock ; I call te prayers the pastor's neck ; And back and lertli te my weik 1 rock, And sink te silence alter. New rope for halters, it is said, can be made permanently Milt aud iii.ible by boiling two Leurs in water anJ then dry ing it in the suu or in a warm room. An English farmer recently found grabs growing en the back of one of Lis sheep. It is supposed that the animal bavin,? laid down upon hay, the seeds get mixed wiih the wool, aud the sheep having been ex posed te rain for a long 'time, the seeds germinated. Majer D. D. T. Moere, we are pleased te see, has become the agiicultural editor of the Tribune and Farmer, of Philadel phia. He is a veteran in this line, having made his inaik as the eiigiual editor aud publisher of the Rural New Yerker and bubsequeutly as the mral editor of the Christian at Werk. One of the most remarkable horses of his age in the state was recently sold by II. W. Seitzer, of Londonderry, Lebanon county. Although the animal is 22 years old, he is a steady traveler and can trot a mile in four minutes. He sold for $124.50 at public sale, and premises te be of ser vice for j'ears te come. Twe twin steers, claimed te he the laigest in the country, were lately ex hibited at Allcutewn, Pa. Although only tour years old the pair weigh 7,300 peutids. They will be taken te Londen and be exhibited at the international eattlc-shew sheitly te be held in that city. They are valued at $10,000 about $1,117 per pound. It is asserted that the soaking of the weed of which wagons are built, in crude peti eleum, aud occasionally afterwards giving the wagons a coating of it with a brush, will add greatly te their strength and endurance. The oil penetrates the weed and makes it less liable te crack, shrink or swell. The weed weik of stage coaches thus treated have rarely needed any repairs. Fer farm wagons it would be very serviceable. All cheap spices are mere or less adul teratcd, aud this applies- te many ether articles of daily consumption. Out of 119 samples of feed tested by the New Yerk beard of health recently, 50 weie found te be adulterated ; and of 75 samples of drugs, 32 were similarly impure. The cheaper kinds of "black pepper" consists of about three-fourths of ground cocoanut shells, lied pepper and mustard are also largely adulterated, care being taken that the foreigu materials thus introduced are of a harmless nature Experiment in urewmg Cern. Germantown Telegraph. An experiment in corn planting, by the Iowa college, last year, in three separate plantings, all put in en the same day May C each plat being 1C0 square yards, re sulted as fellows : The plat in which the hills were 3 feet 10 inches by 12 inches apart, with one stalk in a hill, produced at the rate of G9.05 bushels per aero ; the plat planted 3.10 by 20 inches apart in the hills, aud two stalks te a hill, produced at the rate of 57 bushels te the aero ; aud the third plat, planted 3.10 each way with four stalks te a hill, pro duced only at the rate of 50 bushels te the aero. This is au important fact te knew. The experiment was conducted with the utmost care for the express pur pose of deciding a question which has al ways given rise te a great deal of discus sion, alike as te the proper distances be tween the hills and the rows, as well as the number of Etelks in a hill. Twelve inches distance between the hills would be almost equal te four grains in a hill at 3 feet 10 inches apait, and practically amounts te drilling, which of course would demand additional labor in removing the weeds and cultivating the soil between the hills with the hand hoe, as the crop could be harrowed only one way. Whether the extra bushel would pay the additional cost of labor, we de net pretend te an swer, though the established belief is that it will net, aud that is the reason why se few farmers adept, the drilling system. 8U.VKK Ckkbk, N.
