A PEW WORDS ABOUT PAINT.
In painting a building the most important consideration is te select tbe
very bast Paints, by doing se you avoid the expense of repainting before the
proper time for repainting, occurs. And as the paint costs less than the put
ting en, what you most want te save is labor. The best paints cannot be pre
pared by hand-mixing se that that they will prove durable and cover as great
a quantity of surface as the best paints which are produced by thoroughly ex
perienced and practical paint makers, with the aid of complete machinery.
We have been selling WADSW011T1I, MARTINEZ & LONGMAN'S

OUSTOM-MADE CLOTHING,
vs.
READY-MADE CLOTHING.
The latter is being rapidly
numbered with the past, while
the former is taking its place in
every city and town in the civ
ilized world. There is no neces
sity for buying Ready-made
Garments when you can get a
geed, honest, Woolen Suit of
Clethes, made te your order,
which will fit you, is well
trimmed, and made by first-class
Tailors, as low as $15.
It is very true Ready-made
Clethes leek well when you
see them new, but when you
wear them they will leek seedy
in a very short time, as they are
made te sell and net for dura
bility. They invariably turn out
no geed, and are made mostly
by apprentices and girls. We
knew of one tailor in this city
who, with the help of three
girls, makes from 55 te 60 Men's
Coats in one week, where it
takes from 3 te 4 days for a
tailor te make a Custom Ceat.

M9"Kidncy- Wert en the contrary gees te the

A MOTHER'S CRIME.
HILLING UEK BaBE IN A FRENZY

the Child's Head Agalust h Steve.
An Awful Scene.
An excited man, with bloodshot eyes
and haggard face, went te Captain Vil
liatns, ei the Thhtieth street police sta
tion, New Yerk, at 9 o'clock Wednesday
morning, and reported that an insane
mother had killed Iter babe at Ne. 100
West Sixteenth street. The captain was
just starting for jwlice headquarters ou
business and he detailed one of his patrol
men te investigate the ease. A reporter
accempauied the policeman and heard a
sad story. The house at the address given
is occupied by Dr. S. Itoscuheimer, a chir
opedist. Ilia daughter, Itesa E., aged 20.
was married a year age last November te
Mr. William K. Heward, an eugineer, 22
years old, ompleyod by Messrs. Giles &
Geeghan, in the brass finishing works at
Prince and Woestcr streets. Three weeks
age last Suuday Mrs. Heward gave birth
te a female child. It was a large, healthy
babe. Since its birth the mether has been
afflicted with puerperal fever, which
affected her brain. During her illness she
has been carefully watched by her husband
and parents.
Mr. and Mm. Heward lr.ive lived with
Dr. Itosenheiiner siuce tbeir marriage.
Tuesday evening about 8 o'clock Mr.
Heward visited his mother, Mis. M. J.
Heward, a widow, who lives at Ne. 123
West Eleventh sttcct. The yettug hus
band, who is devotedly attached te his
wife, was in high spirits and exultantly
said te his mother : " Itesa is getting ever
her troubles. Her mind seems clear new
and she talked te me perfectly rational
this evening."
An Iusaue Mether.
The son remained with his mother two
hours, talking about his wife. While con
gratulating, himself ever her seeming
recovery a terrible tragedy was being unac
ted in his home circle. Dr. Kesenhcimer
tells of the tragedy in these words :
" After my seu-iu law went out te visit
his mother I went te Resa's room, the
back parlor en the the second iloer. She
was lying iu bed, apparently asleep, and
the sleeping baby was lying by her side.
Since the child was born Ilusa has had
trouble with her right breast. About
niue o'clock iu the evening Dr. Fergusen,
of Ne. 123 Webt Eleveuth street, camu
here aud lanced her breast, cutting a long
deep gash. A few minutes after the doc
tor went away Kesa said te me : ' Wasn't
I brave, papa, te have that oiwralien per
formed without taking chloroform or
ether ? It did net hurt a bit.' I was
then resting en a sofa at the feet of the
bed. I knew that the operation must have
been very painful and was surprised te
hear Resa's remark, but I made no com
ment upon it. Iu caring for her the night
before my rest had been broken and I was
just falling into a deze when she screamed
' Tapa, keep Will (her husband, whom
she has always idolized) away from me.
He will either give me poison or sheet me.'
Then she talked incoherently, sayiug the
heuse was ou lire and ether tilings which
I cannot remember. At length 1 said,
' Resa, if you don't keep quiet I shall
leave you,' and I opened the deer and
stepped out into the hall, but net with the
iutoutien of going away. As I closed the
deer she sprang Irem her bed like a Uuf!h
of lightning. I heard the belt clash and
the key turned in the lock. A second
later I heard noises as though thore were
men in the room engaged in a rough and
tumblc light.
An Awiul scene.
"I ran down stairs aud called for help
Several members of the housoheld started
up stairs with me. Resa was then stand
ing en the lauding aud shrieked that she
was going te jump te the hall below, but
as we approached her she rau back into
her room aud agaiu fastened the deer.
Mrs. Mitchell, her nurse, burst the deer
open aud revealed a sight that made us
staetrer with horror. The wardrebe had
been thrown down aud brokeu. The steve
in whieh fortunately there was no lire,
was turned bottom side upward, aud the
mirror was shattered into countless frag
ments. Resa had driven her bauds through
four panes of glass in one of the windows
aud broken the wash-stand and' its con
tents. She was seated en the displaced
wardrope, and across her legs was lyiug
a traveliug trunk that was packed with
clothing. Bleed was pouring in streams
from her hands and wrists where the
gTass had cut them. 'The body of the
child lay uuder the stove. The steve
weighs about 150 pounds. Mrs. Mitchell
picked up the babe. It gasped, but was
uucouscieus aud remained se until its
death, which occurred ten minutes later."
The clothing ei the litlle eue was stained
with bleed when the reporter saw it and
the right side of its head was black. It is
supposed that the mether in her frenzy
took the child by its feet and dashed its
head against the stove. Dr. Roseu Reseu
heimer, assisted by his wife aud daughter
Sarah, a girl of soveutecn years, released
Mrs. Uewatd from the weight of the
truuk aud placed her! ou the bed.
Throughout the night spe was a raving
maniac and strong men Were called in te
held her. She made frautic efforts te
jump from the windows and wanted te
kill her husband.
After the pelice had investigated the
case she was put in a carriage and taken
toBellcvue hospital uuder the escort of
her husband, his brother and two police
men. At the hospital she seemed te be
oblivious of the tragic events of the night
and called pitceusly te the attendants te
bring her baby te her.
Mrs. Heward's portrait hangs against
the parlor wall in her father's house. It
is that of a llaxen-haired, blue-eyed
woman, with a pretty face. The family
point with pride te ornaments about the
house that Resa made, among them wax
models of fruit and flowers, aud the walls
are adorned with sketches in oil that came
from her brush.

uurleus Habits or Ants.
Sir Jehn Lubbeck's extraordinary book
ou " Ants, Bees and Wasps," will amaze
readers. Fancy ants having slaves !
Fancy these proverbial examples te the
sluggard keeping certain insects as we
keep cows, and building sheds ever them,
and keeping ethers as pets 1 The aristoc
racy of auts seems te nave all the vices
which brought antique monarchies te
destruction. Sir Jehn writes soberly, as a
philosopher should, aud weighs his words
no doubt, which makes his conclusions
mere astonishing. The author quotes
some of Huber's experiments, the value
of which he has himself tested. The
bleated aut aristocrats, it is said, " have
lest the greater part of their instincts ;
their art, that is, the power of building ;
their domestie habits, for they show no
care for their young, all this being done by
the slaves ; their industry, for they take
no part in providing the daily supplies ; if
the colony changes the situation of its
nest, the masters are all carried by the
slaves en their backs te the new ene ;
nay, they have even lest the habit of
feeding. Hubcr placed thirty of them
with seme larva; aud pupa and a supply
of honey in a box. 'At first,' he says,
'they appeared te pay some little attention
te the larv;e; they carried them here and
there, but presently replaced them. Mere
than ene half of the ' Amazons died of
hunger in less than two days. They had
net even traced out a dwelling ; and the
few auts still in existonce were lan
guid and without streugth. I commiser
ated their condition, and gave them
ene of then: black companions. This in
dividual, unassisted, established order,
formed a chamber in the earth, gathered
together the larva;, extricated several
young auts that were ready te quit the
condition of pupie, aud preserved the life
of the remaining Amazons.' This obser
vation has been fully confirmed by ether
naturalists. However small the prison,
hewever large the quantity of feed, these
stupid creatures will starve in the midst
of plenty rather than feed themEolves. I
have, however, kept isolated specimens
for three months by giving them a slave
for an hour or two a day te clean and feed
them ; under these circumstance.1 they
remained in perfect health, while, but for
the slaves, they would have perished in
two or three days."
