Miss Lilhe, daughter of Gen. William
Patten, died at her home this inerniug at
5:30 o'clock. The fuueral services will
be held at the general's residence, ou Sec
ond street, en Monday at 2 p. m. Rev. U.
W. Humphriss will pi each the funeral

Mt. Bethel cemetery.

Death or JUfea Kexcy IJatr.
Mir. Koxey Bair, a daughter of David
Bair, died last evening at the residence of
her father, en East King street, nearly
opposite the county almshouse. Miss Bair
was "ii most estimable lady in every re
spect. She was for many yeais a teacher
in one of the public schools of this city,
ami in that capacity wen golden opinions
alike from pupils, patrons, directors aud
her fellow teachers. She was iu the em
uhy of the beard at the time of her death,
but for suvcial months past was unable te
teach en account of severe indisposition,
irsulting from a consumption of the
threat and lungs, which finally resulted
fatally.

One hundred and twenty five men are
engaged at the construction of the tunnel
at Phoenixville ou the Schuylkill Valley
branch of the Pennsylvania. The work is
progressing rapidly.
While a little daughter of Jacob Wiest,
of Yerk, was playing near a stove Wed
nesday, shekceeked a crock of het water
devt n upon her, scalding her head and
body terribly.
A Cooper bhep, near the railroad side
track at Chadd's Feld, was demolished
by a house car being knocked through it
by a Seuth beuud freight engine ou the
Baltimeie Central railroad. A number of
ears were also wieeked and rendered use
less by the force of the locomotive while
shifting.
The Western iron association held its
annual meeting in Pittsburgh yesterday
aud re elected its old officers. The caul
rate was reaffirmed. Reports from all
sections indicated an unsatisfactory con
dition of trade and an unpromising out
leek.
The five hundred laborers en the Shamo Shame
kin, Suubury & Lewisburg railroad, iu
this state, who stiuck last Monday for
higher wages, resumed work yesterday at
the old rate of $1.23 per day.
About 40 rollers and beateusin the E. &
G Bni'ike puddling mill, at Birdsboro,
Pa., have stiuck against a reductieu in
their wages of 11 te 12 percent. They
offer te compromise ou a ten per cent,
reduction. The strike throws out of em
ployment three hundred hands.

Oiumore township, intend embarking iu
the canning business the coming season.
They will plant 100 acres iu sugar com
and tomatoes and intend te creittthe nec
essary buildings for the business iu the
village of Fairlield.
The Red rfeal canning company, au cx cx
tensive concern of Harford aud Yeik
counties, is having a steamer aud two
baigcs builj, ta carry their canned goods te
market. The baigcs are being constructed
by Geerge Geiger, of Peach Bettem, a
well known beat builder. The Red Jseal
cempauy embraces thecanners of Hartfeid
company, Md., aud several of Yeik and
Lancaster counties.
In Philadelphia Mai tin Gau, forty years
old, shot himself in the head, because his
wife would net live with him. He was
taken te tl.e Episcopal hospital, wbere he
died.
In Allonlewn Friali Keck leceived a
note stating that his wife aud a strange
man would meet at Kern's saloon. lie
went theie at eight o'clock and seeing
them together drew his i evelver and fired
two shots at the mail, who made his es
cape uninjured. He then liicd twice at
his wile, tiie last shot t'iking etluct iu her
right thigh making a dangerous wound.
Cl.uk, Reeves & Ce., of Phejuixville,
have been awarded the contract for the
building of the Southern Pennsylvania
laiheail biidge at llarrisburg. It will
cost $:,000,000, and will be nearly two
miles in length. It is te commence, at an
elevation ou the Cumberland side of the
SuMjtielianna river, and maintain this
elevation for a considerable distance in
llarrisburg.
The National transit cempauy, which is
just about completing a pipe Hue from the
oil regions te Philadelphia, has under
taken te build a branch line te Baltimore,
with command of two market, and capa
city enough te act as a feeder te the
iclincis iu either or both. The branch Hue
te Baltimore will leave the line te Phila
delphiaata point iu Lancaster county
some (10 miles fietu the latter city, and
will pass thence te Baltimore, also about
05 miles distant, through Lancaster aud
Yeik counties, iu Pennsylvania, and
thence through Harford aud Baltimeie
counties, in Maryland.

man, but of late has engaged in the cheap

Jehn S Obendorf, who for some years
past had been living at Herst & Geyer's
mill, above town, reeently died in New
Bridgeville, Yerk county, where he re
sided the past several years. At the
time of his death an execution was
pending againct him. This was put into
effect between the time of his death
and burial, as the sheriff sold all his per per
benal property. This must certaiuly be a
very delicate matter for an officer of the
law te sell the personal effects of a person
whose corpse lays in the house at the time
of the sale. But as delicate and rare an
occurrence as this is it was the case with
Mr. Obendorf.
Cbargetl with Malicious Mlechlef.
This morning while the telephone ex
change men were erecting a pole at the
corner of Lemen and Water streets, they
found that the wire of the electric fire,
alarm interfeied with their work. As
the quickest way of surmounting the
difficulty they cut the fire alarm wire and
immediately the alarm een uegau te riug,
striking a dozen consecutive strokes before
it stepped. Chief Heweu en learning
what had occurred, made complaint of
malicious mischief against Mr. Ncwhall,
the manager of the telephone, aud Mr.
DemaD, who cut the wire. The case will
be heaid by Alderman Diffenderffer.

Last night at a late hour Nellie Stew
art, coleied, while druuk, went te the
house of William Bosten, en North slreet.
The latter with his wife was iu bed aud
the bellicose Nellie took an axe and began
an assault upeu him. She stiuck him ence
en the leg and he was ciinpolled te lloe
for fear of being killed. lie went te the
office of Alderman A. F. Dounelly and
made complaint and Nellie was locked up
for a heating.
Jehn McLaiu was found veiy diuuk by
Officer Merringer. and the same alderman
sent him out for ill days.

Henry Kegel, baker, of Strasburg was
crossing the Pennsylvania lailiead iust west
