A meeting of the Republicau county
committce was held iu G. A. It. hall.
Centre Square, this city, this morning at
11 o'clock.
A. F. She nek was in the chair and
about one-half the election districts of the
county were represented, including a few
substitute;;.
After the minutes had been read, the
chair stated that the meeting was call -d
for the purpese of fixing the time for the
Republican primary election.
A. C. Welchans moved that the olectieu
be held iu accordance with the rules, en
the last Saturday in May, aud that the
president isue the call for the election in
the usual form. The motion was agreed
te.
The following preamble and resolution
were offered :
"Whereas, At a former meeting of the
Republican county committee it was re
solved te disbar the Independent Repub.
Means in their primary meetings and elec
liens, new therofeio be it "
" Besehed, That said resolution be and
is hereby resciuded."
T. B. Cochran moved te lay the resolu
tion en the table.
A vote was taken and the chair was
unable te decide whether the motion was
carried or lest. Members did net seem te
tumble te the effect of the motion, aud
several short speches were made in ex
planation. Fred Dern and ethers argued
that many of the Independents had get
hack into the trace3 and voted the
straight Republican ticket at the city aim
township election ; that their votes would
be wanted next fall, and that it would be
unwise te disbar them. Brown, of Para
dise, Tem Cochran, of the Sixth ward,
city, and some ethers thought the
party could very well de without
the kickers, and would enforce the rule
which prohibits them from voting at the
primary. The committee didn't make
the rule aud couldn't repeal it. It was
made by the Republican voters at large
and could only be repealed by them.
Cochran said he didn't feel like eating
crew. The committee had resolved at its
last meeting te enforce the rules, and he
didn't propose te say at this one that they
should net be enforced. Besides, the
committee had just new adopted a motion
requiring the president te issue his call for
the primary in accordance with the rules,
and these rules prescribe who shall be
allowed te vote at the primaries.
The question was then called en tabling
the above preamble and resolution, and
they were laid en the table with only a
few dissenting votes.
Secretary "Welchans .said there was a
vacancy in the committee caused by the
removal from the Third ward of Commit
teeman Eph. Shaub. lie moved that
Capt. E. McMellen be substituted.
Mr. Cochran moved teamend by author
izing the retiring committeeman te name
his own successor. The amendment was
adopted.
The committee then went into executive
scssieu.

THE 1TIKST."
Its General Observance Te-day
The throng of country people in town
te-day is as large as has been usual in
former years en the first of April, which
from time immemeral has been annual
settlement day between city merchants
and country patrons. The hotels and
saloons are driving a thriving trade, the
banks are crowded with customers and the
tellers and clerks are much tee busy te
make an estimate of the amount of money
handled, but will have it down te dots by
midnight. The prothenotary and recorder,
together with their regular clerks and a
corps of specials, are busily engaged in
receiving and recording papers pertaining
te thsir respective offices. Bustle and
confusion reign en the streets, but up te
the present hour no breaches of the peace
have been reported.
The German band did a thriving busi
ness te-day and gave excellent concerts in
different parts of the city. It is some
thing wonderful hew large a crowd can be
gathered together by an attraction of this
kind, and it is still mere astonishing te see
hew quickly the majority of them can get
away when the collection is begun. Net
withstanding this drawback the musiciaus
had a rich harvest. Peanut stands were
erected in all parts of the city and did
well. The organ grinders also drew con
siderable into their tills.
The whele city police force is en duty,
although half of them aie in citizens'
clothing. There is very little disorder en
the town and net much drunkenness.
The police report business dull, and no
pick pockets have been heard of.
The cars uu all the trains coming into
the city te-day were crowded. Between
700 and 800 came iu en the Quarryville
read and nearly 1,200 en the Pennsylvania
read.
TUB REPUBLICAN CAUCUS.
Who JJreiv the Prizes en Saturday Nlgnt.
The city officers chosen te-day in joint
convention were the nominees of the Re
publican caucus of councilmen, which was
held in common council chamber last Sat-
uiday evening. Hervey N. Hurst for
president aud David L, Deen for clerk of
common council ; Halbach for super
intendent of the water works, Levan
for street commissioner ; and Myers for
tieasurer, had little or no opposition. Fer
solicitor there were five ballets, J. W.
Deuliuger leading at the start with nine.
Landis uext with seven, Jehnsen falling
behind te five and W. T. Brown had two.
On the second ballet Brown's friends di
vided between Landis and Jehnsen ; aud
en the fourth ballet Jehnsen gained from
Dcnliuger and en the fifth was elect
ed, te 13 for 9 te Landis. It is claimed
by Denlingcr's friends that Landis' can
didacy beat him and elected Jehnsen.
Allau A. Hei r was defeated for city regu
later by a vote of 22 te 1, it being claimed
that his defeat was a punishment for his
failuiu te vote at the last city election in
the Seventh ward, when ene mero Repub
lican vete ter Wohlsen for select council
would have tied him with Geerge J!or

Riming Au.-iy With h m Feed Trengli.
This morning several horses weie tied
le a feed trough twelve feet long iu the
yard attached te Smith's Lancaster County
house, East King street, Among them
they pulled dewu the trough
from the wall te which it was
nailed. This frightened them and
all except one broke loose from the
trough. The one belonging te Mr. Kieid
er, of Slrasbui g, wa tied with a streug
halter, aud it dashed out of the yard with
the trough hanging te it. It narrowly
escaped knocking down half a
dozen ether horses, aud ran up East King
King neatly te Lime, the trough bounc
ing aud rattling at every jump, until it
was knocked nearly te pieces. A deg
with a tin kettle tied te its
tail is a very small circus compared
with the hippodrome produced by this
runaway. The herse was finally caught,
net much the werse en account of the ac
cident, but Smith will have te buy a new
feed trough.

The annual Easter festival of the children
attached te the Sunday schools of St.
James' parish was held yesterday afternoon
in St. James' church, here was a large
attendance, both of children and of adults.
The service was choral, and was admirably
rendered by the surpliced cheh et
men and boys, under the traiuiug of
Choirmaster Prof. Matz, It consisted of
hymns, psalms, carols, prayers, the creed
aud an address by the rector, Dr. Knight.
The closing carol was cspecialy line ; the

New Policemen.
Geerge Winower, the new constable of
the Filth ward, who was appointed a
policeman this morning, is en duty aud

bade adieu te his uniform this merniug.
Geerge Genscmer, of the Fourth ward, who
was appointed in place of cx-Constable
McDevitt also bade adieu te the force and

of these officers have been efficient.

Lancaster thontie-peera will have an emi

new and cxecllent play by the famous Madi Madi

play Is a domestic drama most signally tree

tosnyet It: " Fiem beginning te enditde"s

play Is pure, wholesome, delicious. Thor
oughly charming and marvelleusly refined....
The play has a vein of comedy which is never

joyable as the mere serious element is life
like and sympathetic."
