MABCH 27, 1883. THE TOBACCO MAEKET. IN NEW YOBK AD IN LANUASIEK. Seed Leaf and Havana The Lecal Trans actions Beceni Sales acd Deliveries. U. S. Tobacco Journal. Ne improvement in seed leaf can be noticed. Fer Sumatra and Havana to baccos our market was exceedingly active. Seed leaf remained neglected. There was an unusual inquiry for '81 Pennsylvania, and would be buyers examined many packings, but the only result was the sale of about 230 cases at the usual p. t. There is a demand for this tobacco, notwith standing all reports te the contrary. It contains seme very fine stock ; it has excellent quality, and, as a rule, bums white ; and still hardly mere thaa 5 per cent, of the crop has gene into manufac turers' hands as yet. The cause for this lies with the packers. They bought the tobacco at such high figures that their asking prices last fall made an investment by a jobber or manufacturer extra hazard ous. The Havana seed of Wisconsin and New Yerk was efiered at a great deal lower figures ; and, consequently, while the two last named sold, the first named remained en baud. Then came the long period of enforced idleness in manufacturing circles, the competition of Sumatra tobacco, and, above all. the reports of the magnificent quality of the '82 Pennsylvania, coupled with comparatively low prices asked for the same by growers. Naturally enough all these needing tobacco for jobbing or manufacturing purposes began te indulge in the " bridging ever" process. If '81 Pennsylvania had been the only available block this would have been impossible ; but with the masse3 of stock in the mar ket, including '80 Pennsylvania, '81 Wis consin, '81 New Yerk state and '81 Con necticut, net te say anything of the better grades of '81 Ohie and Sumatra tobacco, investors have found no difficulty in sup plying themselves with leaf. Te our knowledge, no holder of '81 Pennsylvania has se far offered his pack ing at low figures. When we say "low figures" we mean figures which would induce speculative investment. If these holders would place themselves in the po sition of buyers new swarming in Penn sylvania they would arrive at the value of their goods. If they could, as ethers are new doing, buy '82 Pennsylvania at from 10 te 13 cents through, would they pay 15 te 25 cents for '81 leaf? Is there a scarcity of old tobacco new, or is there any chance of oue iu the near future ? If there is one, and if the '82 Pennsylvania is net as geed in quality and yield as the '81, then these holders are right in biding their time for a profitable return for their investment. The sales of the week were as follews: Pennsylvania, crop '81, 250 cases, p. t. ; crop '80, 400 cases, at H te 12J. New Yerk, crop '81, 150 cases Havana seed, at 22. Connecticut, crop '81, wrappers, at 1G te 32. Ohie, crop '81, 200 cases, at 5i te S. Sumatra. A heavy jobbing business was done, sales numbering C00 bales at figutes ranging from 93 cents for light and ragged te $1.40 for daik and medium size. Havana. Market very active. Sales 800 bales. Quotations, 85c. te $1.30. Feity bales of '81 wrapper.-; were sold at $2.80 te a city manufacturer. Guns" Kojiert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Gans' Sen & Ce.. tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending March 2G, 1883: 200 cases 1881 Pennsylvania, 612c ; 200 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, 818 ; 100 cases 1881 New England, 1030a ; 100 cases 1881 Ohie, 5c; 100 cases sundries 3J18. Total, 700 cases. Tbe rhlladelpuia Market. Lear. Seed Leaf Dull is th3 word generally. The truth is but few goods are needed just new. The 1st of May must come and go before the anticipated boom can be re alized. When it does come, there is ene satisfaction : never in the history of leaf merchants has there been a better selec tion of cigar leaf in the market than new, of every grade aud description, se that before long lively times may be expected. Ceusideiiug the condition of trade prices held remarkably steady. Sumatra still has its admirers. Sales of Havana have fallen back in full sympathy with seed. Seme splendid Vuelta is in the market. Receipts for the week : 184 cases Cen neeticut, 2G1 cases Pennsylvania, 37 casus Ohie, 54 cases Wisconsin, 91 cases Yerk State seed, 87 bales Havana, 30 bales Su matra aud 326 hhds Virginia aud Western leaf tobacco. Sales have been : 121 cases Connecticut, 178 cases Pennsylvania, 21 cases Ohie, 35 cases Wisconsin, 57 cases Yerk State seed, 73 bales Havana, 19 bales Sumatra, 71 hhds Virginia and Western leaf iu transit direct te manufacturers. .Exported of leaf te Liverpool, 31,309 lbs ; te West Indies, 2,910 lb-. Total, 34,225 lbs. TI1E L.OUAL IHABKET. Transactions in Old and New Lear. The past week has been a rather quiet one se lar as buying aud selling is con cerned, though there was a great deal of leaf delivered at the warehouses that had been previously purchased. Buyers say that the dullness is net because they are unwilling te buy, but rather because the farmers want as high prices for the bal ance of the crop as were paid earlier in the season for the finer lets which were then bought. There are, nevertheless, a geed many buyers yet in tbe field, and some of them have received orders from their principals te take all they can get at reasonable figures. This is a straw which shows that the crop of 82 is wanted, and that it will be taken off the farmers' hands at paying prices ; ana that the scare of " ever production " aud the competition of Sumatra tobacco is net having much weight with Bhrewd dealers. During the week past there have been no heavy sales in old tobacco. Jehn Hil debrand sold 100 cases of '80 en private terms, and 200 or 300 cases of '80 and '81 were disposed of in smaller lets by ether packers. ftrnat activity continues at the ware houses in preparing the crop of 1882 for market. There is great diversity of opinion among packers as te its condition, and, there is no doubt, great diversity in the quality of different plantings. They are like Longfellow's little girl : "When she was geed, she was very, very geed, and when she was bad 8he was horrid." Seme Recent Sales. Skiles&Fry bought of A. Bart township :J The sales the past week were net se extensive in this neigh borhood, but prices a trifle better. Seme excellent lets still remain unsold, but will no doubt seen ba taken. Martin & Fritz have made two or three purchases in Chester county, but have net yet com menccd te case any ; it is net known what they will de in the trad.e. All their old, or 1880 crop, amounting te near 500 cases, has been sold and shipped. They have still in their warehouse about 200 cases of 1881 crop, bought entirely in districts where there was no hail storm. The sales the past week were as fellows : te Friday : H. Girvin, 2 acres at 13. 4, 2 ; PUDenly, jr., 1 acres at 12, 4, 2 ; W. Jehnsen, 1 acre at 12, 4, 2. Te Sener & Kreidcr : H. S. A Keperter As An Assistant Tobacco Buyer Fer the IsTELLiaKNCEa. Ill Soen as we strike the Chester county soil, Jehn says, " Yeung fellow, down here you must talk as if you are the pro prietor, of this establishment ; go for tlieru." Very seen we begin business. Crep after crop is bought at Jehn's own price, until he runs against a Lancaster county emigrant who holds stiff, and can not be made believe it is net handled, or that it is burned. It is net bought and Jehn gets moody again, says "Oxford for dinner." We drive there for it and leaf around the town for some time, when we start again, looking at lets, but buying none until just before dark we strike a fellow who is ready te sell at 12, 4, 2 ; and then af ay for Russelville, which has new one of the best conducted country hotels in the state ; geed grub and geed beds. We are here again besieged by a host of anxious grewers, all of whom we premise as they have been at ether places. Our old friend, Billy Armstrong, the host, reaps a harvest from it, -and would be glad te have mere buyers come. We are just ready for bad when two mere buyers artive ; lies are swapped ; hample shown ; Jehn pulls out a sample of a crop that he bought that day for 15, 4, 2, but referred net te us. We suppose he bought it in the morning before we were ui). We listen with epen ears and are glad whoa Billy blows out the light. After getting up very late out of geed beds at Armstrong's we get breakfast aud as Jehn has premised we proceed te leek up the holders of the weed. We find it plenty and growers anxious te sell, but little that suits the taste of Jehn, or at least he says se, but tells all ke will be back next week, which we, taking i.ite consideration some former broken prom prem ises, hatdly believe ; nor de the farmers, but pretend they de and consent te wait for him. The few crops that are bought are bought at lower prices than we have seen paid yet. Jehn makes many inquir ies about the holders and seems very solicitous about theso who are compelled te move and must sell en that account :ind we netice nearlv always helps them out of their crops at what he calls big figures, but we don't. We, of course, help him all we can, which he assures us is our duty, but the farmers, we think de net appreciate our efforts We spend the whole day at this place and will net sce one-half of these premised. Around Russelville we put in all the day Jehn fixes prices and gets them frequently saying " I only make oue offer," and Riipli familiar remarks, and taking down the goods, abusing the handling aud bull dozing them generally. By such means he picks up a geed quantity at low prices, and mostly they are geed crops. Several places we have been known as one of the partners of the beuse he represents ; the honor we bear meekly, believing ourselves that we are millieuaiiej.and show it te the peer farmers who leek aghast ; we mean while going for them aud blowing that we had better get back te Lancaster county, where we can buy lower, get geed tobacco and hae it bandied right, &c. We stay all night again at the same place ; the same scenes take place ; prom prem ises are attain made and we go te bed try try ieg te believe the Inger3ell doctrine te case our minds. The next morning Jehn quietly tells me we will put our faces toward home, not withstanding he has positively premised te go in five ether directions ; we get ready te start and tell Mr. Armstrong we will be back next Monday. On our read home we step frequently but meet with little success, farmers get hierhar in their tarm3 as we get nearer home. We went into one cellar; looked at the crop ; the usual talk took place when finally Jehn asked the price. " 25, 12, 8, 3," said the farmer, and in the same breath, "What might your name be?" " Well," said Jehn, ' ' it might be Van dcrbilt, and ftem the price you ask me for your tobacco I suppose you think I am he." As he hastily eet out and into the wagon the reply of the farmer was mere profane than elegant. We again cress the beautiful Octoraro, take dinner with our friend Jee Roop, at Kirkwood ; it being a geed one, we enjoy it. Here we meet another buyer, the generally peer crop is discussed, and we think we really were mistaken that we had seen no geed tobacco at all, and are net at all sur- 5 prised te bear both Jehn and the ether buyer say all tuey naa aene was some three crops ; they had seen an immense quantity, but it had no style, &c, all runs te our minds very forcibly when we get around te the Hiester house in the evening in time te hear Jehn tell the senior hew many geed fine crops he did buy and appeal te me te back it up, for whieh the .senior ordered a bottle of Mumm. We arrive in Lancaster again late in the evening well pleased with the country we have passed through, but will have te de penance for some months te take away the recollections of Jehn's depravity, and what a trial we have had, and are con vinced that the life of a buyer is "net a rosy one."
