Great Excitement la the Streets el UbIob UbIeb UbIob tewn The Judge's DIssast at the Ver dict rreceedlugs of the Last Day. Dukes Banged la Xttgy. Unlontewn Dispatch te the Times. The town is iunnibg wild with excite ment. Te-night the ' jury in the Dukes murder trial brought in a verdict of net guilty. The judge denounced the verdict and reprimanded- the jurors. The men who did this thing are : Alexander Jerdan, laborer,- aged 49. Henry Mclntyre, miner, 52. Elmer Cagey; farmer, .31. Hiram Balsley, carpenter, 40. Themas Bamberger, miner, 39. William T. Clawsen, wagon-maker, 50. Geerge Washington, farmer, 52. Jacob Listen, farmer, 58. Lawrence L. Knotts, distiller, 49. Rebert H. Acklin, blacksmith, 27. Jacob M. Amalong, gentleman, 42. Samuel D. Cramer, blacksmith, 32. These men are all Democrats. They are all married men and all have families. Mclntyre, Clawsen and Washington hava grown up daughters. Net a man of them was for a verdict of murder. After the news had spread the greatest indignation prevailed everywhere. Men are parading the streets making threats of lynching, and Dukes has sought the pre tectien of the sheriff for the night. A public indignation meeting has been called. Tne scene In the Ueurt Beem-The Judge's Censure of the Jury. Outside the narrow room in which the twelve men sworn te render a verdict by the evidence were gathered, uuder lock and key, there was but one sentiment as te what the verdict should be. When the prisoner was first arraigned and pleaded " net guilty " se boldly, the feeling of the community was about evenly divided, but under the evidence, and especially the letters written by Dukes te Nutt, almost all sympathy for his murderer melted away. In the hetels, where theso who had listened te the evidence gathered ; upon the street corners, where the nearest professional associates of the prisoner at the bar had congregated, there was but one voice, and that for a verdict of murder in the first degree. Coupled with this, from many who knew the composition of the jury came grave head shakings and doubts of the integrity of the men with whom the issue rested. The streets were full of people, and from lip te lip the question ran: "Will they de it?" "Dare they acquit him ?" Old men left their seats by the spring fire and hobbled out te add their voices te the general denunciation. Men of middle age and the yeqng men of the town walked the streets or sat listen ing for the ringing of the courthouse belL which would indicate that the jury had agreed upon their verdict. The Jury Deliberating. In had been announced that if the jury agreed before 9 o'clock the bell would be rung and the whole town hung anxiously upon the summons. Meauwhilc, the twelve men sworn te render a righteous verdict sat in their little room, debating whether they should find Bakes guilty of manslaughter or acquit him altogether. Net a voice was raised in favor of convic tion for murder even in the second degree. Immediately upon their retiring they re ro re Beived te keep their deliberations secret. Then the first ballet wa3 taken, which re suited iu nine for acquittafand three for manslaughter. The slew work of talking ever the evidence aud taking standing votes by holding up the right hand went en until eight ballets had been taken. It was new fifteen minutes te 8 o'clock. One of the tipstaves en guard was told te notify Judge Willson that the jury had agreed upon their vetdict. As he walked across te the judge's residence, en Main street, some of the watchful eyes caught him. There was an instant surmise w hat it meant, and the nearest group started for the court house en a run. Several times before, when the church bell rang or the clock struck the hour, there was a false alarm and the mero excitable ran, but this time -the cry went up, "They have agreed ; the jury are coming in." A Great Knsh tu Cenrt. The sound of hurrying feet passed the word. The evening paper?, with the last details of the trial, were Hung upon the fleer. Stores and shops were deserted. The late comers te the hotel supper tables infected with the excitement, dropped knife and fork and ran. The waiters dropped, their napkins and ran after them. Before the first tap of the bell summoned these in the remoter quarters of the tewD the court house yard was a mass of peo ple. The court room was jammed as it had never had been during the days of the trial. With one step upon the plat form by his desk Judge Wilsen said, fore bodingly : " I am afraid the verdict comes tee quickly te be the right one." The jury filed slowly in and took their seats. In came the counsel in the case. In at length came the prirener, his step as steady, his face as stolid and irnpae sive as ever. It is said he had an inkling 'of the verdict. He sat tilted back in his chair, with his plump hands folded placidly upon his stomach while the clerk called ever the names of the jurors. His ejes were bent upeu the table in front of him till the clerk went through the formula and came te the question : " Hew say you ?" Net Gnilty. Jurer Mclntyre, who had been selected te deliver the verdict, broke in premature ly, " Net" The clerk said : Held en." Dukes glanced up at the juror who had thus foreshadowed the verdict, while Clerk Searight went en with his formal question : " Is the prisoner guilty as he stands in dicted or net guilty ?" " Net guilty." As the words fell from the lips of the juror there was a hiss or two and a few feeble cheers. The majority seemed te doubt if they heard aright and did noth ing. The prisoner made no sign that he had heard what was said. Judge Wilsen seemed amazed and said : ' I suppose the verdict that you have rendered is one that you thought you should render under your oath, but it is one that gives dissatisfaction te the court, because we thought the evidence was suf ficient te justify you in rendering a differ ent verdict. If you have committed an error it is one that we cannot avoid, but can only express our coudemnatien'of it in this mild way. The prisoner is dis charged." Great Indignation In Union town Threats of .Lynching Jlsde. The crowd rushed out, bnt waited about the halls te see the acquitted manfe start out. no starcea aewn tne eacx way, but remained concealed, en the stairway while his counsel, passed out the ether way, and the crowd, seeing him go, iu a measure dispersed. On the streets indig nation at the verdict ran high. An.imr pemptu prccess'ea formed at euce and paraded the stieets with a rude effigy of Dukes upon a pole "and crying his name with oaths and jeers. Threats of lynch ing were freely made. ' Dnkes sought the protection of the sheriff, and closeted him Mtf in the jaU building for the night. He fSCelXlsmSmst, ' as- r&Si-'J!. b? ! It has been im possible te see them sinca. flanged 1b Kfsgy. The effigy of Dukes, after being carried in precession through the town, was hanged upon a tree before the McClelland. Heuse, the crowd singing : "We'll hang Lyman Dukes en a sour apple iree." In the midst of the throng steed old Asbnry Struble, the stepfather of Dukes, who had been caught up and carried along in the' precession. The effigy, idea took like wildfire with the-angry people, who were seeking some means of expressing their disapproval of the verdict. By ten o'clock effigies were hanging from the lamp-pests in all parts of the town. Meanwhile the sober-minded men were giving expression te their feelings in another way. A paper was rapidly circu lated, (sailing an indignation meeting of Jill who are jealous of the reputation of Dayette county, it was hurriedly signed and will be posted through the town and neighborhood. It reads as fellows : "Indignation Meeting Citizens of Fay -ette county, who are in favor of sustain ing the character of the county before the civilized world, are invited te assemble at Pest Office Cerner, Uniontown, at seven o'clock p. m. en Thursday, 12th instant, te express their indignation at the out rageous verdict acquitting the assassin of Captain A. C. Nutt. Let the world knew that the law abiding eitizens of this county are shocked and horrified and their feelings outraged by the verdict." A Motion te Disbar Unkes. A motion will ba made in court te expel Dukes from the bar and it is confidently expected that Judge Willson will receive it favorably. His strictures en the jury are the mere noteworthy from the fact that in his tough experience with Fayette county juries he never commented en a verdict before. At midnight the excitement is abating en the streets and the town is cooling down.- The jurors have net come out of their holes, but it is said that the three who went the length of voting for man slaughter at first were Jerdan, Mclntyre and Iiisten. Till? NKWS KB ACHES 1IAKK19BCKG. Representatives Declare that Dnkes Shall Net Sit In the Heuse. The news of the acqnittal of Dukes has excited the capital. In" hotel lobbies and at street corners disappointed and indig nant legislators, both Republicans and Democrats, openly declare the trial a farce and the verdict an outrage against the commonwealth. The Democrats are particularly disgusted and say that he shall net sit with them in the Heuse. They de net believe that they can prevent him from taking the oath as a member, but if he should take that step they are determined te expel him. One of the first en the Republican side te open fire upon Dukes will be Colbern, of Somerset, who is en intimate terms with State Treasurer Baily, under whom the slain Captain Nutt served as cashier. Representative Davis, of Montgomery, says that he has three daughters and he vows that in respect for them he would refuse te be a member any longer if Dukes were permitted te sit in the Heuse. Dozens of ether representatives express themselves in an equally determined manner. The opposition te Dukes en the fleer of the Heuse will probably be based net upon the killing of Captain Nutt, but upon the indecency of the slayer's letters. ' A Carious Experiment. The ease with which persons fall under hallucinations of special sense is illustrat ed by M. Yung, in a recent communica tion te the Helvetic society of sciences. The operator places eight cards en a table in positions corresponding te forehead, eyes, cars nese, mouth, and chin ; he pre tends te " magnetize" them and also some person in the company, and then gees out, while the magnetized person is required te touch any one card. The operator, having returned, notes the action of a confederate, who scratches a part of his head corresponding te the card touched. Then he commences an innocent comedy, passing his hand carefully ever the cards, and en reaching the touched card seem ing te experience a strong shock. The observers are surprised, of course. One of them i3 then asked te go out and re peat the experiment. It is assumed that a certain card had been touched. Passing his hand ever the cards, he indicates, in nine cases out of ten, a particular card as giving him a shock ; and if the company be instructed te support his idea of that being the " correct card," he is confirmed in his illusion, which may be successfully repeated. Of eighty-five persons tried, M. Yung found only nice who refused te indicate a card, net having experienced any sensation ; fifty-three said they had exactly the sensation announced, and twenty-three described sonie different sensation.
