is mighty nice tobacco." One leek from
Jehn settled me, while Abe smiled with
joy. " Hew have you stripped it, Mr.
fl. ?" said Jehn. " Twenty inches up,"
said Jehn. "Why the devil don't you
put it up twenty-four inches,'- said jeun.
" Tried that last year, get fooled, don't de
it again," said li. " What would you ask
for it?" said J. "If you want te buy will
pat a price; if net, won't. What is it
worth te you ?" all in one breath, said If.
" Can't buy and sell both," rejoins Jehn.
After a considerable amount of side play,
daring which I was trembling in my beets
and trying te una my revolver, ii. buj'b
ask bucU prices." Auetlier wrangle, dur
ing wbicb it comes out that Jehn's eiler is
20, 10, 5, 3 ; II. comes te 24, 12, 7, 3. Jebn
says, " let's go," and we get into tbe
wacen, H. following, big drops of sweat
coming down bis cbecks trying te induce
Jehn te ceme up, remarking " you won't
find a better crop in this county," &c.
After another wrangle we started Jehn
was moody and silent for seme distance,
when he breaks out vehemently, " Seme
d d Jew will buy that crop for less
money than I have offered ; mind, if they
don't ; and see here, young man, if you
make any mere such remarks as you did
in that cellar you can hoof it back." Te
which I meekly answered that I thought
it wax fine. Jehn assented, saying : "If
you must talk, always ta'.k down the
crop ;" of which I took a note.
After a short time we step again, stay
iu the wagon ou account of a big deg,
shout several times when a woman comes
out. "Is Mr. B. at home," says Jehn.
" Yep, but he is at the barn ; what de you
.want?" says she snappishly. "We want
te see his tobacco if he has net sold."
"Guess it's no use, there have been a dozen
here, and they only tore up the piles."
Assuring her that we will buy it if itfuits,
she concludes te go for the man, telling us
te tie our horses, but never paying any
attention te the deg. Jehn gets out, when
the deg makes a break for his leg, aud
comes pretty near gettiug it, anu jeun
climbing iu again says a geed many ugly
things in regard te dogs. We wait fully
fifteen minutes befoie Mr. 1$. comes out
" very leisurely from tbe barn and says :
'Get out aud come iute tbe cellar."
"Chase this deg away," says Jehn. "Oh!
he won't bite ; just ceme right in." Rut
we are net sure of it, aud Mr. 13. drives
him off when we get out and give the de;;
a wide berth.
We get into the cellar, began te exam
ine the goods aud I timidly remarked :
"Yeu haven't get a very geed crop this
year, Mr. B.," en a venture. Mr. IJ. gave
me te understand that it is nene of m.v
business, and Jehn smiled this time and I
resolved te help neither party iu the
futuie. The same wrangle took place and
we quit the cellar, leaving Mr. B. in ill
humor te fix up his licks and ourselves te
find the deg waiting for us en the out
side. Just then we heard Mr. and Mrs. B 's
conversation, net very complimentary te
tobarce buyers, and te Jehn in particular;
he having been the last oue thuic his was
the fieshest case. Standing here, afraid
te proceed under the guardianship of the
deg, Jehn calls Mr. B. out. IIe came
reluctantly, when, much te my buipribc
Jehn offered him ene cent niore for his
wrappers, aud after a long wrangle it is
bought for 22, 8. 5,
biiis et' sale are
exchanged and Mr. B. invited us te stay
te dinner which me declined, and followed
by Mr. B. aud the deg in the
rear, we get into the wagon, he
untying the horses, and we wcre off ; and
Jehn told me it was the cheapest thing he
bad seen this season, but I am constrained
te think the deg had something te de
With it.
Jehn grows enthusiastic ever it, gets
warmed up, and when he gets te the next
place leeks around for a deg, finds uoue,
gees in finds just what he wants, buys it
for 20, 10, 5, H, though worth a geed deal
mera than the ether for mere money.
" New," said Jehn, " we will go down te
P for dinner," which we get in due
time, and start south. About a dozen
crops, only ene bought, and Jehn in dis
gust observes that we will go en down
the country and stay at D all night,
which we de, and during the evening en
tertain and are entertained by a crowd cf
growers, everyone of whom are premised
that he will be te sec them next day,
which I doubt, but remembering our
former observations heid my tongue, glad
when it was time te go te bed, where I
dreamt of leaf tobacco all night. The
recollections of the first day's experience,
still fresh in my mind, and Jehn, who was
snoring in two minutes, kept muttering
0 6, 3 and 1 " and " tee much burn," and
such familiar expressions as long as I heard
him.
