or tbe New Xerk Market.
The tobacco people did net take much
stock in Prophet Wiggins, and despite
Ms prognestigations of tidal waves, hurri
canes and tornadoes, the buyers paid many

tracting parties, who steed aloof from
each " ether for a long time, but finally
came together te their mutual benefit. It

TtlE NEW- YOWL MAKKET.
Sec a Leaf and UavanaLasl week.
U. 3. Tobacco Journal.
While the settlement of the tax ques
tion has imparted new life te the manu
facture of cigars, the leaf market has net
brightened up in the least. There were,
le be sure, quite a number of manufac
turers and jobbers in tbe market daring
the week,' bat their purchases were small,
and were made without any display of
avidity. Evidently these who visited the
market de net believe in a rise in prices
of leaf, and, it seems, rather expect a de
cided redaction. Fer that expectation
there is no geed foundation, except in
cases where purchasers of '81 have paid
extravagant figures.
The prices which have ruled in the
market daring the past few months will
undoubtedly continue, be they profitable
or unprofitable te the holders.
The-much cherished idea that an in
crease in duty en foreign wrappers would
cause a rise in prices of seed leaf wrappers
is fruitless and will be for at least a long
time te come. The new crop of Sumatra
tobacco amounts te 40,000 bales in excess
of that of the previous one. Such increase
will undoubtedly create lower prices for
thisarticle at Amsterdam. Experienced
importers believe that a reduction of from
25 te 35 per cent, can be relied en with
safety. The increase of the duty is but
40 cents a pound. Comparing the former
duty with the higher the difference is
small and net enough te seriously check
the importation of this stock. The im
position of the new duty will oceur en
Jalyl. The new crop of Sumatra .will be
offered in Amsterdam some time in May.
Se, there, ample time i3 left te importers
te bring t'uose wrappers into the country
under the old duty in quantities sufficient
te last many months.
We were the first te urge an increase of
duty en Sumatra tobacco. We suggested
strenglyjthat a duty of $1.50 per pound
be imposed. Pretentious meddlers thought
fit te convey te Congress the idea that any
increase would be welcome and effective..
Hence the insignificant one provided for
in the tariff bill. We did want we thought
te be our duty in this matter and we ask
no thanks. Let the blame rest where it
belongs.
Frem Pennsylvania we hear of rapid
purchases of the new crop at what appears
reasonable, but net low figures. In
vestors held that the 1882 Wisconsin crop
is a failure, and that tlierefore Pennsylva
nia will have te take its place. The recent
purehases of the '82 New Yerk state are
attributed te the same cause.
Frem Connecticut the leperts of sales
are less animated, a cooler reflection than
lately prevailed seemingly having taken
place.
The Ohie crop is believed te be of
unusually fine texture, and quite an army
of buyers are new te be scen in the tobacco
districts of Ohie.
The sales of.the week wcre as fellows :
Pennsylvania, crop '80, 500 cases ; 0
cents for fillers ; 10 te 15 cents for run
ning. Crep '81, 150 cases ; p. t.
Connecticut, crop '81, 123 casaj wrap
pers, at 10 te 27 cents.
Ohie, crop '81, 800 cases, low, at 5 te
0ceut8.
Sumatra Market very active. Sales,
350 bales, mostly te manufacturers. As
the stock of fine, dark, old is shrinking,
holders assume quite an independent
action as te figures and terms. Importers
apparently consider the coming increased
duty of no importance whatever, they
expecting as great sales of the stock, if
net greater, than heretofore Prices vary
from $1 te $1.50.
Havana Market moderately active.
Sales 500 bales, principally te jobbers.
Prices firm.

Seed Leaf As with ether branches of
cigar leaf, dealers show mere life, while
purchasers examine and buys with dicid
cd encouragement. They seem te under
stand what they are new doing, hence for
the goods sold satisfaction is claimed.
Some of our manufacturers have recently
been examining the packing bought of '81
crop, and express an agreeable surprise at
the faverable showing of the leaf. It has
loxture, color and quantity, aud can there
fore be used profitably. Dealers show up
very fine wrappers iu Connecticut, Penn
sylvania and Havana seed, which meet
with faverable response. Binders fillers,
as usual, move off nicely at full figures.
Sumatra still commands attention from
certain admirers, notwithstanding the in
creased duties.
Havana is moving elegantly iu tbe
market, especially if first class in quality.
The price obtained is satisfactory. Ynelta
has the first call.
Receipts for tha week : 502 cases Con
necticut, 393 cases Pennsylvania, 31 cases
Ohie, 77 cases Wisconsin, 113 cases Yerk
State seed, 101 bales Havana, 31 bales

Western leaf tobacco.

Less and Gain or Land by Floed.
Cincinnati Enquirer.
One of the strangest freaks of the flood
is repotted from Whitewater river, a few
miles abeve Lawrcncebnrg, where Farmer
Hunt lest 40 acres of land, and his neigh
bor, Fred Newheuse, has a barran and
rocky mill site converted into 10 acres of
as rich land as the fertile valley affords.
The land along the Whitewater is as rich
as auy in the West. An acre of ground
here is au independence for a gardener,
and 10 acres are little les? than a bonanza.
During the flood the Whitewater bottoms
were overflowed for miles along the stream
and the extraordinary height of the water
created currents that had never been
known before. Since the subsidence of
the flood it has been found that 40 acres
of Farmer Hunt's richest soil has been
carried away, leaving that portion of his
farm practically worthless until restored
by a system of tillage and fertilizing.
Fred Newhouse, who recently removed te
the Whitewater bottoms from Aurera,
owned a mill Mte just below Hunt's farm.
Newheuse's property consisted of 10
acres of rocky and barren land, unfit
for farming purposes. A portion of this
was a large mill-pond. The mill pond is
new filled te the level of the breast of the
dam with the richest soil and Mr. New-
house's remaining acres of unproductive
rocks are covered te the depth of several
feet with the same rich deposit." Instead
of being a loser by the flood he is ahead
the value of 10 acres of Whitewater val
ley land, which, when there is any of it in
the market, commands from $200,te $500
an acre. Mr. Newhouse is a fine practical
miller, and the whole neighborhood just
new is put te great inconvenience by tbe
temporary shutting down of his mill. " If
it were net for the annoyance and delay of
changing my" mill from water-power- te
steam-power for I am left without a
dam" said Mr. Newhouse, "I would
laugh at sy less."
