HoMten bad it from an Indian chief, as
-fellows : "A. long time age, when the
Spaniards overran and plundered Mexico,
eae of the red men left them and came
towards the rising sep. They crossed the
Bie. Grande and net knowing what lay be-.
fore them.- entered neon the great salt
narabes. They traveled many days J
jukL found bat little sweet water
or game. The weather grew het
aad the little streams dried up and the
grass withered and many old men and
women and children died of thirst One
day, after many weeks of weary walking,
a party of young brave?, who had been
sent ahead te reconneitre, came running
back and said : 'We have found water;
oaeen!' This geed news put new life
into their veins, and although nothing
could be seen but a dry, flat, bald prairie,
-the scouts were standing still, calling and
beckoning te them and pointing towards
something apparently at tneir leet. ai
length they reached the Bpet where the
braves were standing. Fifty feet below
themjthe limpid waters of the Colerado

"even an Indian vision could reach,
stretched a green expanse. The tall
xneequite grass, yielding te the breath of
the gentle south wind, rolling in vast
billows of verdure under the ardent sum
mer sun. Little '.islands' of mesquite
trees dotted this grassy sea, and herds of
buffalo and deer grazed in peaceful ignor igner ignor
anee of an enemy's approach. Fercettmg
hunger, fatigue and even thirst in this
delicious vision the red men fell upon their
knees and cried out : ' Tehas !' Tehas !" '

A Beauty Milkmaid.
Londen Society.
Among the brilliant coterie of beauties
that surrounded the Prince of Wales at
Brighten in the early part of the present
century was Lady Qaggerstene, whose
charms had at first sight attracted tbe ad
miration of the amorous Florizel. But
net content with the general admiration
which his royal highness was disposed
te grant te all pretty women, her
ladyship was ambitious te complete
ly captivate tbe heart of the heir
apparent. Accordingly a fete champelre
was announced te come off at her pretty
little villa near the Spa, and her ladyship
was determined te charm tbe prince by
assuming a rustic dress that would have
satisfied the taste of a Watteau. At her
residence she had a miniature farmyard
and three pretty little Alderneys. When
the prince with his friends and attendants
had arrived tbe fair hostess came forward
from a side wicket dressed as a milk-maid,
for the put pose of making a syllabub for
the prince. Sbe bad a silver pail in one
hand and an ornamental steel in tbe
ether. Thus equipped tbe tripped
along, with ribbons flying fem bcr
dainty little milking hat that
hung en one side of her grace
ful bead, and the smallest little apron tied
below her lace stomacher, till sbc came
opposite his royal bigbness, te whom she
dropped a carefully-studied, bewitching
rustic curtsy. Then passing lightly ever
the beautifully plaited straw, her tucked
up gown showing bcr neat ankle as well as
her colored stockings, sbe placed her steel
and pail conveniently for use Leaning
against the flank of one of tbe crossefct cressefct crossefct
leoking of tbe Alderneys, sbe was about
te begin her pretty task ; but, net relish
ing this new and strange companion, tbe
animal at once commenced kicking out.
upsetting steel, pail and milkmaid, and
then trotting coolly away. Lady Ilag Ilag
gerstene rose covered with confusion and
beat a hasty retreat into her little dairy,
whence she did net emerge again that day.
Decency Toward JUerces.
Fer the IrrrELLieENCEH.
A horse cannot be screamed at and
cursed without becoming less valuable in
every particular. Te reach tbe highest
degree of value the animal should be
perfectly gentle and always reliable, but il
it expects every moment that it is in tbe
harness te be " jawed" at and struck, it
will be in a constant state of nervousness,
and in its excitement is liable, through
fear, te de something which is net ex
pected. It is possible te train a horse te
be governed by the word of mouth as it
is te train a child, and in such trainiug
the horse reaches its highest value.
When a horse is seethed by tbe gentle
words of his driver and we have seen
him calmed down from great excitement
by no ether means it may be very fairly
concluded that he is a valuable animal for
practical purposes, and it may be cer
tainly concluded that the man who has
aceh power ever him, is a humane- man
and a sensible one. But all thin simply
means that the man must gain the
animal's confidence. Only in exceptional
instances is a horse stubborn or vicious It
he understands bis surroundings and what
is required, of him, be gives no trouble
As almost evsryn-eaacr must knew, if tbe
animal when frightened can be brought
up te the object, he will become calm.
The reason is that he understands that
there is nothing te fear. Se he must be
taught te have confidence in the man who
handles him, and then this powerful ani
mal, which usually a man could net
handle, if it were disposed te be vicious,
will give no trouble. The very be6t rule,
therefore, which we would lay down for
the management of the horse, is gentle
ness and geed sense en the part of the
driver. Bad drivers make bad horses
usually. "W. A. D.
