The late cock fights at Wild Cat Fall
seem te have inspired a number of young
men of this place with a desire te imitate
the brutality of their e!derc. A. crowd of
them went into the country just outside
of (he borough limits, yesterday afternoon
and had a contest between two pairs of
cocks, although the fowls were notpre-
vided wilh steel gafs, but fought with
their natural spurs. Nene of them were
killed, but the sport was none the Ices
inhuman for that. We wonder if there is
net an agent of the society for tbe pre
vention of cruelty te animals in town ?
A Terrible Accident.
This morning at 9 o'clock Dennis Mc
Carty, an old repairsman of the Pennsyl
vania railroad, had his right leg mangled

while measuring rails back of the round
house here. lie was flret taken te tbe
company '8 temporary hospital and then
removed te his home in Elbow lane. Am
putation will be necessary, the limb re
quiring te be taken off above the knee.
The victim will hardly recover en account
of his advauecd age.

The gutters are again filled up with ice,
which will nccesbitate the renewed use of
the pick and shovel, in order te afford a
free passage te the drainage from the
upper parts of town.
A Successful festival.
The festival of the E. E. Lutheran
churh closed last night. The gross re
ceipts were ever $300 and the net proceeds
are about $225. Tbe fan drill' was net held
last night, and neither were the fans of
the drillers auctioned oft". Each lady was
. presented with the fan with which Bhe
drilled as a souvenir of the occasion. There
have been a number of festivals lately,
but the town will be quiet for awhile new,
at least in this respect.
A moody llattle.
During tbe progress of a fight between
two young men en Union street last night
Fred. Ball, one of the combatants, received
a sovern scalp wound from a knife in his
antagonist's band. Tbe bleed flowed freely,
but the figbt still went en untill Ball
finally thrashed bis enemy. Nene of the
spectators of the fight attempted te put
a step te it, even after the cutting took
place. Tbe knife bas played a prominent
part in a number of fights in this place of
late.
The Kevlval Slacking Otr.
The usual Urge crowd was net present
at tbe revival services in the Methodist
church last night. Kev. Ilumphriss an.
ueunccd that this would be the last
week of tbe meetiug if there was net a

Jeseph Beyer is tbe owner of an old
pistol, that contained an old lead. Wish
ing te discbarge it, he drew a bead en
Philip Wolfs cat that was disporting

Tbe Only True Prepbet.
The ground hes, the only reliable
weather prophet, revealed te us en the 2d
of February that we were te have six
weeks mere wintry weather from that date.
Nearly four weeks of the allotted time
have parsed and the ground hog's proph
ecy has been fulfilled te the very letter.
We have had snow, hail, sleet and wind
or rain nearly every day, and te-day the
mercury fell te ten above zero, ibis
ought te be enough te satisfy tbe most
skeptical that tbe ground hog is tha only
true, original and legitimate prognos pregnos prognes
ticator of meteoralegical phenomena,
and yet our esteemed contemporary, tbe
Harrisburg Patriot classes him in the
category of Vennor, Wiggins, the almanac,
tbe geese bone, and ether false prophets.
Perhaps the two weeks of bitter weather
yet in store ler the unbelieving editor may
open his mind te a perception of the truth
as it js recorded by the ground hog.

BON. DAVID DAVIS te STEP DOWN.
Republicans Likely ta Cboesa
Preclaeatel the Sate" JTre Ten
Who it Will Be.
"Washington, Feb. 27. In the Senate
te day, Mr. Davis (111.) announced his in
tentien of resigning the office of president
pre ttJiu at neon en Saturday, the da of
March, in order that a new president pre
tern, might be elected.
Various petitions were presented from
rinters and ether workingmen, protesting
nst any action- teexcluda union print
ers from the government printing office.
What It Mean.
It is believed that the announcement by
Judge Davis that he will resign the office
of president of the Senate pre tern, at neon
next Saturday was prompted by informa
tion from President Arthur that he does
net intend te cenvene the Sonate in special
session en the 5th of March.
It is understood that the Democratic
senators will offer no opposition te
the prompt election of a Republican sena
ter pre tern. Mr. Antheny, who filled
this position from 18G9 te 1873, and who
was tbe choice of the itepuelican caucus
in 1881, will net be eligible for election
te held the place during the coming re
cess, as bis present term will expire with
the legislative day of March 3d, and he
cannot be sworn in again until tha next
meeting of the Senate. Although no caucus
convention has yet been taken en the sub
ject, the indications are that Mr. Ed
mund's will ba chosen president pre tern
pore, and that the ethor officers of the
Senate will held their positions until De
comber, jrf
The Heuse resolution autherfijBg Majer
Ludlow, of the engineer cerpp, te accept
a civil position (chief engineer of the
water works, Philadelphia), was passed.
After the transaction of some miscellane
ous business the Senate went into execu
tive sesbien.
In tbe Heuse.
Immediately after the reading of the
journal the Heuse proceeded te vote en
tne adoption et tne iteea resolution auu it
was agreed te yeas 129, nays 22, Demo
crats generally refrained from voting.
Tha uegative vete included Bayard,
Campbell, Ermentrout, Walker and
"Wise, of Pennsylvania. Hammend, of
Ga., then rose te a question of privilege
and offered a resolution declaring the
action of the Senate unconstitutional in
substituting for the Heu&e bill te reduce
internal revenue taxation a preposition
imposing import duties. He then pro
ceeded te argue upon the constitutional
question raised by his resolution.
Mr. Hammend's resolution also pro
posed that tbe tariff bill be laid en
the table. Argument en the res
olution was continued at length
and Mr. Haskell offered as a substitute
that tbe bill be referred te a conference
committee, and that the constitutional
question be confided te the committee,
which shall submit its findings te the
Heuse.
Tbe Ilonne Committee's lrlii;il Sleeting
The llouse committee of military affairs
held its final meeting te-day. Among
the bills left unreperted are the Grant

the secretary, who reterrcd the matter
back te Capt. Ramsay, giving him au
thority te excuse any further discipline
necessary, and te make any suggestions
or recommendations he might think ad ad
