WHAT BEGINS AND ENDS THE WEEK.
The Terrible Veyac of tie American
Line Steamer Ohie A Third Officer
Washed Ashore.
The belated steamer Ohie, of the Amer
ican line, arrived at Queen street wharf,
Philadelphia, Saturday at half-past twelve
o'clock. te the great relief of many anxious
friends of these en beard, after one of
the roughest passages ever made by an
American line Bteamer. The vessel was
compelled te battle with adverse winds
and heavy seas from her departure from
Liverpool, February 2, and during almost
the entire voyage.
On the evening of the 13th, at seven
minutes past eight, a heavy gale struek
her. It was accompanied by a blinding
mist, during which Charles Werth, the
third officer, was washed overboard and
lest. The night was se dark that nothing
could be seen of him. The fourth officer,
William H. Fergusen, bad been en the
watch until five minutes past eight, when
he was relieved by Werth, who remarked
te him what a bad storm they would like
ly hare during the night. A moment after
Fergusen went te the cabin, Captain Mer
risen, who was in the pilot house, sawytae
gale coming and called te the' officers te
come inside, but he bad scarcely spoken
when a heavy sea struck the steamer and
she was thrown en her pert side, then
back en te the starboard side and back
again te the pert side. It was shortly
afterward discovered that the smokestack
had been washed away and that Lieuten
ant Werth, who when last seen was stand
ing under the stack, had disappeared. If
he made any outcry it was net
heard above the rearing of the sea. Had
this sea struck the steamer but a few mo
ments before, while the watch was being
relieved, it is probable that all the" officers
en beard would have been washed away.
The water poured into the cabin and
steerage, causing panic among the pas
sengers in the latter place, many of whom
rushed up en deck, but were net able te
stay there because of the fury of the gale.
At one time there were two feet of water
in the cabins and three feet in the held,
slightly impairing the working of the en
gines. Besides the stack all the lifeboats
except two aft beats, were carried away
and the davits all badly damaged. The
repairs will cost $2,500. On the morning
of the 14th the storm began te abate and
grew less violent until the 18tb, wheu it
ceased altogether.
The Ohie brought ever thirteen cabin
passengeis and one hundred and two steer
age passengers.
The officers of the Ohie say, with the
exception of the lamentable less of the
third officer, the homebound was prefera
able te the outbound passage, when the
weather was very fair. The reason was
that when they left pert their water tanks
were filled with Schuylkill water when it
was in its highest flavor. People knew
hew bad it was when it was fresh, but the
officers say they cannot knew hew horri
ble it was several days' stale. Arriving
in Liverpool they emptied their tanks,
scrubbed them and filled them with suffi
cient British water te supply them
their return te Liverpool, some
weeks hence.

Geerge F. Wilsen, connected with the

R. I., made1 a will leaving $500,000 te his
daughter Alice. After thi3 they quarreled,
but he did net change the will until Janu

died, and the second will was found,
which bequeaths stock in the Rumford

Brown University, and te Dartmouth
College stock te the fimeflnt of $50,000
These bequests are left in trust, and at
the end of five years the college receive
the legacies. Te Alice, his daughter, he
leaves fifty shares of the company's stock
in trust, she te receive the income only,
the cash value being about $25,000. The
bulk of hisprepeity was left te his sons,
Geerge and Ellery, amounting te $300,

of the stipulated five years trust. Alice
at once contested the will, alleging that
when it was executed her fatl'er was net

A Defaulting Bank Teller Who Slipped
Frem a Detecllve'u Urasp.
There are a number of highly indignant
police officers aud detectives in Buffalo.
A defaulting bank teller, who has been
under their surveillance since Thursday
evening, Saturday, gave them the slip,
and is net te be found. It is related that
en Thursday morning the discovery of a
defalcation was made in the Dominion
bank at Terente. When Mr. Redmond,
one of the tellers, went te the office that
morning, he was requested te hand his
cash te the chief teller, that it might be
counted. He complied and .immediately
left the bank.
The cause 'of his hasty departure was
seen explained by the cash being found
$7,000 short. Suspecting that Redmond
had engaged hi) some-sort of .speculation,
inquiries j.werenude aTbrdkers' offices.'
After a diligent search it was learned that
Redmond carried stock en margins te the
extent of (20,000. Mr. Bethune, the
cashier, said that the defalcation amounted
te nearly $7,000, but the bank had suc
ceeded in recovering about $4,000. Red
mond reached Buffalo that evening and
was seen followed by a detective.
The culprit was traced te a little hotel,
and plans were laid for his arrest, bnta
clerk in the hotel was told by a thought
less reporter that there was a Terente
detective and a fugitive from the same
city in the house. The clerk is a Terente
man and at once became interested. His
investigations put Redmond en his guard

The Arrest of a Man Who Received tie
Stelen Jewelry.
Upen the affidavit of Colonel William
P. Weed, ex-chief of the secret service de
partment, a warrant of arrest for Nathan
I. Bennett, of 44 Clinten place, New Yerk,
was issued by United States Commissioner
Osberne Saturday. Colonel Weed had in
his possession a bench warrant issued by
Judge Cartter, of Washington, upon an
indictment found against Bennett as the
receiver of the diamonds said te be worth
$20,000 from ex-Senater Christiancy in
September, 1881. Colonel Weed discev
ered that a Washington detective, whom
Mr. Christiancy employed in his divorce
proceedings, knew of the possession of the
jewels. They were most of them family
treasures, committed te the custody of
Mr. Christiancy while he was United
States minister te Peru by residents of
that country who feared pillage during
the war with Chili. Colonel Weed says
he learned that the detective referred te
had introduced a man iuteMr. Christi
ancy's room nominally te fix a lock ; that
this man took the diamonds first te the
shop of a Washington man named Done-
uue and that subsequently the goods were
received by the man new arrested, Nathan
I. Bennett. Colonel Charles S. Spencer
appeared as counsel for Bennett, person
ally vouched for his geed charaeter and
asked a postponement of the hearing until
Monday. Te this Assistant United States
District Attorney Fiere assented. Bail
could net be taken under the law, which
prohibits it until after the case has been
passed upon by the United States commis
sioner. Suffocated by Swallowing False Teetb.
Mrs. Careline Yiethamer, a widow,
twonty-five years old, residing at 533
Diamond street, Philadelphia was under
treatment for malarial fever from Sunday
February 18, until Thursday last by Dr.
L. S. Blum, of 929 Diamond street. He
was summoned hastily en Thursday after
noon and found his patient iu convulsions
aud unconscious. Every effort was made
te revive her. but ineffectually. As she
was expiring her mother noticed that a
plate containing two false theeth had dis
appeared from Mrs. Victhamer's mouth.
Dr. Blum at once saw this was the cause
of the convulsions, but as he had no in
strument for cutting into the larynx,
where the plate had ledged he was unable
te save his patient's life. An autopsy was
made and the plate was found in the
threat. An inquest was held and a ver
dict of death by asphyxia rendered.

The vicinity of the tell-gate at Salsburg,

large woodpile near the Heuse. The re

blown te pieces. Mrs. Kern was struck in
the faee aud body by the flying pieces. She
was severely burned. It is said that a
