MONDAY FVBNING, FEB. 5, 1883,
DUCTUit ANI JDUOE.
A .Sciv 1'ecm by Oliver Wendell Helmes.
At the annual banquet or the Jlosten Bar
Association, en Tuesday evening, Mayer
Palmer was called upon te speak ler the city
of llosten. He closed his remarks by calling
in turn upon Dr. Oliver Wendell Ilolmcs Ilelmcs
"the lather who went iu search ei a captain,
and, llnding him, presents new lib son, the
Judge." Dr. Helmes responded by reading
the following poem, referring, of course, te
the recent elevation of his son, once a seldieri
te the judicial bench.
His Hener's Father yet remains
Ilia proud paternal posture linn In ;
Hut, while his right he still maintains
Te wield the household red and reins,
lie bows belerc the lllial ermine.
What curious tales has life in btere,
With all its must-be's and its may-beVi !
The sage or eighty years and mere
Once crept a nursling en the lloer,
Kings, conquerors, judges, all were babies.
The lcarlcss soldier, who haa laced
The serried bayonet's gleam appallng,
for nothing save u pin misplaced
Tins peacelul nursery lias disgrace I
With hours ofunhcreic bawling.
The mighty monarch, whe-c renown
Kills up the stately page historic,
lias howled te waken hall tiie town,
Ami ilniahcd off by gulping down
Ills caster oil or paregoric.
The Justice who, in gown and cape,
Condemned a wretch te strangulation.
Has scratched his nurse and spilled his pap,
And sprawled across his mother's lap,
Fer wholesome law's administration.
Ah, lite lias many a reet te shun
Rclere in pert we drop our anchor ;
Hut when lt8 course is nobly run
Loek uit! lertheiethc work was done
l.iiu ewes its headway te the spanker !
Yen seat of jiuticu well might awe
The lairesl manhood's halt-blown summer ;
There Parsons scourged the laggaic law.
There reigned anil ruled majestic Shaw
What ghosts te hail the last newcomer I
One eause et lear I faintly name
The dread lestduly's dereliction
.Shall givese rarely cause ter blaine
Our guileless voters will exclaim :
" Ne need et human jurisdiction !"
What keeps the doctor' -i trade alive !
Had air, bail water, meie's the pity !
Hut lawyers walk where doctors drive,
And starve in streets win-re surgeons thiivi'.
Our ISoslen Is i pure uciiy.
What rail ler .Judge or Court, indeed,
When righteousness prevails se thinugh it
Our virtuous car conductor-! need
Only a card whereon they rem! :
"De right ; it's n.tughly net. te de it !"
The whirligig of time K-cs round,
And changes all things bid affect Ien ;
One bles-'ed com teri may he found
In Heaven's bread statute which has hound
Each household te it's head's protect ion.
Ne'er aggriuved, attacked, accused,
A sire may claim his sim'.- devotion
Te shield his innocence abti.scd.
As old .Midlines lively used
lli.ellsprings ieg ler locomotion.
Yeu smile. Yeu did net come te weep.
Ner I my weakness te be showing ;
And thews any stanzit-, siiijlil and el.eap.
Have served their simple use te keep
A lather's eyes trein oveiile". lug.
