GAMBETTA'S CAREER
AN ILlAIi OF DKAMATIC I.VCICEMS
Tlit 'Uifrtater el France A Leader Iu War
Tunes, bliarhiK lu All the I'elitlcil
Struggles or lbeHepublIu.
M. Uumbetta's career was an Iliad of
btnuiiie and dramatic incidcuts. Of hum
ble origin, by his talents alone he rese te
ue (me el tue foremost men of Franca.
Had be survived be would probably have
been ejected president of the Republic. Uy
a sreat aud powerful party of his country
men be was looked upon as a demi god,
and as the only hop. of the Third Repub
lic. Streng, passionate and piujjressiirc,
he itisp-red admiration and hatred, and
few men even had se lare a share of cor
dial friends or se formidable a party of
bitter enemies. The late 51. Duluare, ene
el nis admirers out a kcenobservcr witital
ence said of him : " I knew of no man te
whom the destinies of a crcat country
miybt be mere safely confided. He will
l)e a Richelieu without cruelty and a Col Cel
bert without vanity." His fees en the
contrary declared that he possessed neither
the instruction, the temperament nor the
intellectual qualities requisite for a states
man. But though they denied his states
tnauKhip they never questioned his ceur
age. The undoubted facts of his life preve
him a man of rare adroitness and remark
able ability, and from these facts it is net
difficult te form a just and aceutate esti-
i mate of the place he will eccudv iu the
history of his country.
Leen 5Iichel Gambetta was born at
Cahors en the 2d of April, 1833. His fam
ily was of Italian extraction (coming orig
inally from the neighborhood of Getiea),
and his parents kept a shop known as the
" Geneese IJazaar," where odds aud ends
or everything were sold. The Gambetta
family, imbued with all the superstitious
religious fervor for which the lower classes
of French and Italians are celebrated, de
cided that their son should net be brought
up le a commercial life, but educated for
the priesthood. Se young Leen Gambetta
was scut te the parish school te learn his
letters aud prepare te enter the seminary
of 51entauban.
Rcfore, however, this important epoch in
his life was reached the child met with an
accident which was destined te entirely
modify his character and tempeiameutand
te exert the greatest influence ever the
whole t; jer of his life. One day, when
only eight years old, while looking at a
cutler boring holes in the haudloef a knife
with a drill fastcucd te an old broken foil
by a piece of catgut this rude raachine
gave way by reason of tee great tension,
and the broken foil struck the right cye of
the child with great ferce, perforating the
cornea. These are the real facts of the
case : and the tale told about young Gam
betta putting out bis ii;ht eye voluntarily
with a penknife in order te be removed
from the seminary which he abhorred is
entirely a fiction.
"While yet a very young man he went te
Paris, whero he read law and seen be
came the centre of a large circle of
friends aud admirers. His political
career began iu 18G9 when the electors of
!5ciloville scut him te the corps leitl stir.
He formulated a radical pregramme, at
tacked the imperial constitution, protested
against the plebiscite and against the dee dee
laratieu of war, and when the empire fell
with such ?. terrible crash he was nomi
nated a member of the provincial govern
ment of September -4. Upen his entiance
into the legislative body he made him-ielf
immediately conspicuous by inventing a
fresh taunt for the empiie. Yeu arc the
first government," he thundered forth,
"which docs net ventuie te celebrate its
birthday.'' A sintonue which found
thousandfeld echo in ihn hearts of the
Pari&iaus eternally en the loekt ut for
readymade watchwords.
Alter Sedan he was appointed minister
of the interior, and remained in i'.uis
Jiome time after the Germans had invfhleu
it. He was all en fire with patriotism ;
he wanted the French te resist te the laat;
but, shut up like a ra; in a trap, he had
no otiperluuity le reu&e the country. lie
was, however, equal te the emergency.
He resolved te get out of the then be.
leagucred capital by a balloon, and he did,
though net without ruining great risk.
The German army was bent en slaying
him and proved its intent by firing can
nons and ritles at hiih, striking the cai,it i.;
said, and even grazing G;n. bulla's hand.
He alighted at Amicus, wLuice he v,v.t.t
te Tours, wiieie he was intrusted with tl 0
control of the war depaitmeul. He did
everything te lire the nation's b:tist ;
he would net think of capitulation or di -teat
; he v as for continued battle, while
his compatriots had the remainder of an
army, lie was amazingly eloquent ; he
produced immense ciTeet ; he encouraged
the timid ; he inspired the despondent.
He denounced in unmeasured terms the
surrender of SLstz a? deliberate treason en
the part of Bazainc, and declared that if
the army were rid of him it would be
again victorious, as had been its record
for generations. His enthusiasm aud en
deavors came tee late. "When it was do de
eided te app ;inc a national assembly he
sought by a decree- dated January el.lSTl,
te give the body a wholly republican char
acter by diiccting that no official who had
had any relation te the second emp're
should share in the election. Uisiuarck
objected te the docrce, which was accord
ingly cancelled. Gambetta then resigned
his ministry, and, worn out with hia
nearly superhuman exertiens aud bitterly
discontented at his non-success, went
te Spain for a while te get rest and
change. .
Although he had failed te achieve his
purpose he proved his wonderful power
and energy during the time when lie was
really the dictator of France. Ilia failure
was owing te uncontrollable circumstan
ces ; he did everything that man could de.
If he had been director of affairs before
France had been irremediably involved iu
German toils, it is impossible te say what
he might have accomplished. Certainly
no Frenchman exhibited any such force,
efficicBcy and genius as Gambetta during
the war. He subsequently entered He
chamber of deputies as the leader of tha
extreme left. His labors wcre incessant,
his pcrscrvauce unqucnchable, his hepe
boundless. He was a total disbcliever in
expediency or compromise, as may be
seen by his organ, the Ikpublique Fran
caise, which he issued and substantially
edited. Bismarck, most sasacieus of Ger
man statesman, considered Gambetta, it is
said, by all odds the ablest man of his
nation. 31. Gambetta was net married.
He is reported te have been engaged for
some time te a rich woman of position,
the ebstacle te their nuptials being her
urgent desire te be united by the terms of
the church, te which he, as a rationalist,
was opposed. His position was prccisely
that of Daniel Rechat in Sardeu's play,
said te have been aimed at him.
After the election of Thiers te tie
presidency Gambetta displayed a new
character had become thoughtful and
judicious. This conduct had its effect in
restoring public coufidence in him, aud
ere long he was the recognized leader of
the republican forces ; and in these con
tests with the ministry of MacMahen, who
exhibited a spirit which can scarcely be
interpreted etherwise than imperialistic
iu its tendency, Gambetta bere a meat
conspicuous part in defeating the minis
terial tactics.
The first step te fertune of a pecuniary
character was the founding of that power
ful and ably conducted journal the
Republique Francuise -by 31, Gambetta
assisted by a few intimates. It proved r.
great success financially and politically
through the hard work of its projector,
who iu spite of weather aud distance, was
te be found night after night, always at
his pest. As founder of this journal, 31.
(.Tambetta was in the receipt of half its
profits, and the inceme which he thus de-
rived may be estimated at $10,000 a year.
His personal appsarance has been thus
described : He is very erect, carries his
head in a dignified and firm manner, has a
large but well shaped mouth, beautiful
hands, grayish hair and the left eye bright
and full of fire. All bis facial character
istics beteken a man of the Seuth. He is
of medium height, has a large trunk.
bread chest, and moves clumsily. He
tends te obeseness, but strives energetic
ally te check this tendency by oxcrcise.
He frequently walked from Paris te Ver
sailles in company with a friend, and last
summer he was hunting in the environs of
3IaImaisen while the
had him iu Londen.
Paris newspapers
rrayms In the Icy Schuylkill.
A sensation was created along the river
front at Reading 3Ienday morning by the
discovery of amau kneeling dewu iu the
Schuylkill river earnestly engaged at
prayer, lhc water was about two feet
dcep aud was net frozen. It rcquired
considerable effort te bring him te shore
and he proved te be Richard Richards, a
respectable middle-aged carpenter, resid
ing iu the city. He has recently beceme
deranged en the subject of religion and he
says he was commanded te de as he did
by the Lord. Subsequently he disap
peared aud was discovered kneeling en
the railroad and fervently praying. He
then rau towards the river again and fears
wcre cntertaiucd for his safety uutil he
returnca at a late hour that evening. His
cold bath has net clTectcd him, although
he was scantily clad.
He had just returned from his summer vaca
tion, and describing the beauties et mountain
scenery te a lady friend, he asked : "Have you

answered: "Ne! but I have seen the Uull's-eeugh-syrup

Brown's Iken Bitters is ene of
the very few tonic medicines that are
net composed mostly of alcohol or
whisky, thus becoming a fruitful
source of iutempcrance by promoting
a desire for rum.
Brown's Iren Bitters is guaran

take tbe plac? of all liquor, and at
the same time absolutely kill the de

Rev. G. W. Rice, editor of the
American Christian liceicw, says of
Brown's Iren Bitters :
cm., e.. Nev. 10, 1831.
Ucnts : The foolish wasting
of vital force iu business, pleas

our people, makes your prepara
