BOSS WINANS' HOUSE.
A ifencriptioB of tbe Baltimore Millionaire's
MagnlUcteBt Mew Baslaence.
Tim magnificent private residence for
Iloss It. Wiuans, the well known million
iare, on SL Paul street, Baltimore, the
erection of which was commenced last
xKiti?, is now completed. The workmen
are putting on tbo finishing touches, car
pet, etc., are being laid and by next week
tbo dwelling will be ready for occupancy.
Tlio structure i8 paid to be the finest pri.
rate liouso south of New York and will
be excel in point of beauty and elegance
auy dwelling in Baltimore. A number of
invited guests, accompanied by Mr. Wi
nans, visited the house on Thursday to
nuku an inspection. The lot upon which
the house stauds is 135 feet front by 122
leetdcep. The house itself is CG feet
long by 73 feet deep, and is five stories
high, with sloping mansard roof. The
stylo H.French renaissance and tho exte
rior resembles very closely an old Belgian
French chateau, with clinging ivy and
historical associations. What remains of
tbo lot has been transformed into a beau
tiful gardcu at a cost of $30,000. Around
the yard and building is a brick enclo
sure. The interior of the dwelltug is as
magnificent an the fancy of the owner can
make it. It is of satin red oak and euou
ized cherry woods, iulaid and carved, ami
in oac!i room thero ara costly bevoicd mir
roirf. Tho hall runs tho full .length of the
building aud upon its ornamentation and
decoration havo boon expended alone 10,
000. The cost of the ciitiro building and gar
den when finished will be about $300, UU0.
In the construction Mr. Winaus ordered
that no expenso bo spared. There are
rooms in the basement for sixteen servants,
also laundry, kitchen, boiler-pit, store
room and drying room, aud upon the first
floor thero is a handsome ball room, draw
ing, reception, dining rooms, parlor aud
library. Tho other lloors are to bo takeu
up with bed rooms. The most striking
features iu the architectural appearance oi
tho house arc two towcis, one at the front
aud the other at the rear. They icach ouly
as far as the cornice, and remind one
of the pictures of Keuilworth castle. At
the bide of each of the towers riso four
circular chimneys, unique iu design aud
mado of pret-sed red brick, with jet-black
cement. Tho material of which the house
is built is pressed brick and brownstonc
and the blooding of color is rich and per
fect. Mr. Winaus will move from his
Ilollins street mansion and occupy tho
residence on St. Paul street as soon as it is
finished. The old mansion will ha occu
pied by his bister. The new building was
designed by McKim, Mead & White, of
New York, tho architects who designed
the Vandcibilt mansion, aud tho builder
was Blike, of Baltimore.
