LANCASTER DAILY INTELL1GEKCEB, FRIDAY. DECEMBER 22. 1882.
Lancaster intelligencer.
FRIDAY EVENING, DEC 22. 188U.
THE TBUEB KIMiS.
BT HEHLY W. lOHOPILLOW.
Three Kings came riding Irom lar away,
Melchlor and Gaspar andBaltazar ;
Three Wine Men out of the East were they.
And Uiey traveled ly night and they fel pt by
Kortbe'ir j;ui !c was a beautiful, wondcrlul
star.
The star was so Iieautltal, large and dear.
That all the other stars of the sky
itocame a will e mist In the atmosphere,
And the Wise Men knew that the coning was
near
Ol the Prince foretold In the prophecy.
Three caskets they bore In their saddle bows,
Tlnee caskcti of cold with golden keys ;
Their robes were of crimson silk, with rows
Of bells, with pomegranates and furbelows,
Their lurbanH like blossoming almond
trees. And so tlio Three Kings rode into the West,
Through the du-k of night over hills and
dells,
Aud sometimes they nodded with bcurd on
breast.
And sometimes talked, as thoy pansed to rest, 1
With the people they met at the wayside
wells.
" Of the child that is born," said Baltazar,
" Good people, I pray yon, tell us the news,
For we In tho East havo seen his star.
And have ridden fast, and bavo ridden far,
To find and worship the King of the Jews."
And the tho people answered: "Yon ask In
vain ;
Wo know ot no king, b-it Herod the Great V
They thought the WUe Men were men Insane.
As Uiey spurred their horses across the plain
hike riders In haste who cannot wait.
Aud when they camo to Jerusalem,
Herod, tho Great, who bad heard this thing.
Sent for the WisoMcn and questioned them ;
And said : " Go down unto Bethlehem,
And bring mc tidings of this new king."
Ho they rodo away ; aud tho star stood still,
'1 he only one In tho gray ot morn ;
Vit, it stopped, It stood still or its own free
will.
Right over Ilethleheiu on tho hill ;
The city oi David, where Christ was born.
And tho Three Kingd rode through tho gate
and the guard.
Through tho silent street, till their horses
turned
And neighed as they entered the gic.il inn-
yard,
Hut the windows wcio closud and the doors
ere barred.
And only alight in the stable burned.
And cradled there In tho sccnletl hay.
In the air madosweet by tho breath ot klno
The little child In the manger lay
The child that would bo king ono day
Ol a kingdom not human, but divine.
His mother, Mary of Nazareth,
Sat watching beside Ills place ot I est.
Watching the even How or Ills breath.
For the joy ot lito and tho terror ot death
Were mingled together in her breast.
They laid their offerings at His feet ;
The gold was their tribulo to a king ;
The frankincense, with its odor swe et.
Was for the priest, the Paraclolo,
The myrrh for the body's burying.
And the mother wondered and bowed her
head,
A nd sat as still as a statue of stone ;
Her heart was troubled, yetcomtorlcd.
Remembering what tho angel Jmd said
Ol an endless reign and ot David's throne.
Then the Kings rode out of the city gate,
Willi tho clatter ol hoofs in proud arr.iy ;
Rut they went not hack to Herod tho Great,
For they knew his malice and feared his hate.
And relumed to their homes by another
way.
