Democracy at all points has far exceeded
my expectation. I especially congratulate
you on your masterful management of tho
campaign and tho thoroughness with which
you havo watched all tho details and inci
dents of tho fight. Let me counsel you
now to take f.onio much needed rest and
save yourself for tho final struggle soon

I read with interest your torso and

sons named iu your letter, and, in the
main, agree with your view of them. Ono
ot tho persons of whom you wrote in a
recent letter has rushed upon his fate in
spite of all efforts to savo him from hurt.
If our New York friends waut harmony
why do they insist upon an appointment
which is not enly forbidden by tho law
but would sot the party into an instant
uproar? Do they seek a collision ? Your

agreeably surprised at what you say of
Senator Conkling's feelings toward the
general and his administration. So many
reports have represented the senator as
personally unfriendly, as determined to
have his own way or fight, that it has ap
peared that a collision was inevitable. I
know the general is anxious to build up
the Republican party everywhere, and
would bo glad to havo tho friendly co
operation of the senator. They are
both very independent, whoso friend
ship would greatly strengthen
tho administration and tho party and
whose hostility would be calamitous. In
view of tbo unfortunate misunderstanding
referred to in your letter, and in view also
of tho opinion which the general holds
(on what appears to bo strong grounds of
public policy), that tho secretaryship ol
tbo treasury ought not to go in that direc
tion, what do you say to my suggesting
to him to make Morton secretary of the
navy ? I know ho likes Morton aud that
he is veiy anxious to build up tho navy.

It would be worthy the ambition of any
business man to take that department in
hand.
Would not this bo a satisfactory solu
tion of the difficulty all round ? It would
save Morton from embarrassment and

Wanamaker's.
Silk novelties innumerable
and indescribable. Everything
that ladies or dressmakers have
occasion for in matching; deco
rating, combining. What we
are remarkable for, more than
for anything else in silks, is va
riety ; or, at least; we are re
puted so. You hear it said by
everybody: "If you want to
match anything, or find a rare
silk, even an unexpectable one,
go to Wanamaker's."
The other peculiarity that
everybody expects to find here
is less pleasant to speak of;
lower prices. We put it second,
because there are people who
don't credit us with lower
prices. Still, we imagine that
if one should assert the con
trary, almost everybody in Phil
adelphia would believe it.
Oftener we speak of other
aspects of our trade; aspects
less obvious or less recognized.
It is well occasionally to give
old news.

Warm skirts for ladies, and
leggings for ladies, girls and lit
tle girls. The warm skirts are
satin, satin-and-cloth, satin-and-felt,
satin-and-Italian -cloth, and
Italian, all quilted; cloth, flannel
and felt prettily trimmed, not
quilted, warm enough without.
The leggings are all sorts ; one
very useful and fairly pretty
sort, woven, at two-thirds value,
25 to 65 cents.

Furs have to be thought of.
We're busy enough as to mak
ing. If we advertise at all, we
ought to say what will not op
press us with too much making.
Perhaps this it is. A great many
seal coats and fur-lined circu
lars are ready-made. More
sizes are ready-made here than
anybody expects; especially the
unexpected sizes. Ready-made
work we can make in July.
Why shouldn't we make all the
shapes and sizes ready-made ?

we guess our prices haven't
been very high ; have they?

$1.50 no that isn't the way to
put it; it ought to sell according
to our theory, for just as little
as we can afford ; and that is 75
cents.
Look out for such now. It's
time for over-buying and all
sorts of mistakes to show them
selves. We try to keep ready
to turn other folk's mistakes to
account for ourselves and for
you.
