raigned before Magistrate Smith, on
the
charge of bigamy. The prosecutor was
Anna M. Hippie, of Ilarrisburg. who was
married to Engle afcer a very brief court
ship. The ceremony was performed iu
Cauada, whence the young woman was
induced to accompany him. Some time
before the proceedings opened Miss Hip
plo and some friends quietly entered the
privato office of the magisffate, and was
hortly followed by a crowd of people
greedy to hear the testimony.
Before the case was called the prosecut
ing counsel handed to Mr. Diehl, the at
torney for Engle, a telegram, dated De
cember 14, bearing the siguature of
"Thomas J. Diehl, attorney," addro'sed
to Anna M. Hippie, 437 Walnut street,
and reading : .
" Deny any intimacy with Engle ia
Canada or any other place, or you will
he .11 rested for perjury. Ho is arrested
for bigamy and adultery with you
again. Don't mind newspapers what
they say."
Astonishment struggled in Mr. Diehl s
countenance as he read over this dispatch.
Handing it to Engle, but giving him no
opportunity through his abruptness to
read the dispatch, Mr. Diehl demanded :
'Who sent that?" Engle answered : "1
il.m't know'." " Did you Rend it ?" Mr.
Diehl again asked. "I did nf" Eugle
responded, without conning th pipar.
' Did I send it ?" Mr". Diehl emphasized
with a smack ol the linger on tins tuewage.
Engle answered : " You did not ; I don't
know who bent it." Mr. Diehl turned
around and said : I'll find out who sent
it and have him indicted for forgery."
Mr. Heverin, who represented tho proo
cutor, remarked: "Never iniud. Tho
man who sent it is in tho room," awl as
ho spoke pointed at Engle.
Mr. Dieb!, Mill incensed, went t- the
latter and with warmth declared : "I rep
resent you to-day, but I'm doao with you
after this case ; you'ro too dangerous to
havo anything to do with." Benjamin II.
Holts, of 1,838 P.irrish street, testilied that
EujiIo was married to Dott's wife's sister
iu 1870 and had lived with her at Potts
Miwn and ou Parrish street, iu this city.
The accused was much Mirprised when
Mr. Ilcvcriu, going to tho ante-room, led
forwaid a woman whoso form was decked
iu a .shimmering satin circular. As sho
iaised her veil and disclosed the pallid
features of tho lady who is known as Miss
Anna M. Hippie the prisoner trembled
aud ljst his nerve.
Tho witness narrated tho story of tho
first acquaintances and their subsequent
intimacy, tho Canadian marriage, Euglo's
provision for her support and other
ipntim's. It was announced that there
wern other witnesses to clinch thesa allu
(stious. Magistrate Smith announced'
that tho bail was $l,G00. Englo appealed
to Mr. Diehl to rcnaw tho bail which tho
latter had given for a hearing, hut tho
episode- of the telegram had make the
lawyer callous and ho refused to oblige
his client, who was almost stupefied when
the magistrate commanded that he bo
taken dowu to tho county prison.
