sottly tbe night Is sleeping
On Bethlehem's peaceful hill;
Silent the shepherds watching,
Tbe gentle flocks are stllL
But hark ! the wondrous music
falls from the opening sky ;
Valley and cliff re-echo
Glory to God on high !
CEOXUS.
Glory So God, glory to God,
Glory to God ! it rings again,
Peace on earth, good will to men.
Day In the East Is breaking ;
Day o'er the crimsoned earth ;
Now the glad world Is waking,
Glad in the Sarlonr's birth !
See where tbe clear star bendeth
Over tbe manger blest :
See, where Ihe Intant Jesns
Smiles upon Mary's breast :
Come with thcgladsomo shepherds.
Quick hastening from the fold ;
Come with the wise men, pouring
Incense and myrrh and gold.
Come to Him, poor and lowly.
Around tbe cradle throng ;
Come with your hearts ot sunshine,
And sing the angel's song.
Weave ye the wreaths unlading.
The fir tree and the pine ;
Green lrom tbo snows ot winter,
To deck the holy shrlno ;
Uring ye the happy children !
For this Is Christmas morn ;

To remove oil?, varnishes, resins, tar
oyster soup, currant jelly, and other se
lections from tbe bill of fare, use benzine
eoap and chloroform cautiously, with
whitewash brash and garden hose. Then
hang on wood pile to remove the pangent
tilluvia of the benzine.
To clean ceilings that have been
smeared by kerosene lamps or tbe fra
grance from fried salt pork, remove the
ceiling, wash thoroughly with borax,
turpentine and rain water, then bang on
the clothes line to dry. After, pulverize
and spread over tho pie-plant bed for
spring wear.
To remove starch and roughness from
Hat irons, hold the iron on a large grind
stone for twenty moments or so, then
wipe off carefully with a rag. To make
this effective the grindstone should be in
motion while tho iron is applied. Should
tho iron still stick to the goods when in
use. spit on it.
To soften water for household purposes,
put. in an ounce of quick limo in a cer
tain quantity of water. If it is not suffi
cient use less water or more quicklime.
Should the immediate lime continuo to
remain deliberate, lay tho water dowu on
a stone aud pound it with a baseball
club.
To give relief to a burn apply the white
of an egg. The yolk of the egg may be
eaten or placed on tbe shirt bosom, ac
cording to the taste of the person. If the
burn shonld occur on a lady she may
omit the last instruction.
To wash black silk stockings, prepare a
tub of lather, composed of tepid rainwater
and white soap, with a little amonia. Then
stand in tbe tub till dinnor is ready. Roll
in a cloth to dry, Do not wring but press
the water out. This will necessitate the
removal of tho stockings.
If your hands are badly chapped, wot
them in warm water, rub them all over
with Indiau meal, then put on a coat of
glycerine, and keep them in your pockets
for ten days. If you have no pocket con
venient, insert them in the pocket of a
friend.
Woolen goods may bo nicely washed, if
jou put half an ox gall into two gallons of
tepid water. It might be well to put the
goods iti the water also. If tho mixture
is not stong enough put in another ox gall
Should this fail to do its work, put in the
eutiro ox, reserving the tail for soup. The
ox gall is comparatively useless for soup
and would not be preserved as article of
diet
Manuring Trees.
(lermaulown Telegraph.
We notice frequently outlandish recom
mendations, agriculturally and horticultu
rally, which must lead to failure and dis
couragement. We have nave now before
us ono of theso for stimulating the growth
of trees, by boring holes in the ground and
pouring in liguid manure about tlte roots !
flow tbe roots are generally to be got at in
this way we cinnot bco. What better csn
be desired than applying the samo liquid
uniformly over tho ground and let it soak
in ? If the surface is very bard it should
be loosened. Or, what we contend is still
bettor, top dress the surface as far as tho
branches extend with good mauuro, and
the substance will soon find its way uni
formly to the roots with the assistance of
the rains. Our own judgment and practice
has always been to treat the soil in which
the trees, fruit and ornamental, grow,, as
far as can be done, the same as soil that is i
cultivated for vegetables or general farm
crops, and we have always been satisfied
with tbe result. As some evidence of the
effect of such application wo will mention
this instance : Some years ago a hemlock
spruce had a rusty appearance and at last
fell much behind tho others in depth of
color. It was about twelve feet in height,
and must have been set out at a spot wheie
the soil was not as affluent as that where
others were planted. At anyrato two
wheelbarrow loads of good manure, spread
out as far as the extremity of the branches
restored it perfectly the first year, and it
was among one of our handsomest trees.
