How Kalstrom Beached the Crib In the Lake
Amldtt Storm and Danger by HI
Wife's Heroic Connect.
Chicago Tribune.
I wonder how many of the hundreds who
look out on the lake every day and see the
crib tower rising up against a blue or gray
sky, as the case may be, know of a scene
that took place thero nearly three years
ago?
At the time of which I speak the crib
keeper was a Finn named Kalstrom, a gi
gantic man and heavy in proportion to his
size. He was known abont tbe wharves
as "Big Charlie," and his claim to dis
tinction was that he had, as he said,
"gommanded a bark of a doiuand duns'"
in which he had sailed tho North Seas,
and in which, Yikinglike, he had carried
o2 his wife, a biihtfaced Irish girl from
Droghcda, one of the east pott of Ireland.
She was a small woman, with gray eyes
and long black lashes. She' had strongly
marked ejebrows and a mass of waving
black hair that crept in littlo curls around
her temples and I be nape of her neck.
She had the piquant noso of her race and
a cenerons mouth filled with strong white
teeth. It was in March, and the day was
one of those soft, treaalierous ones that
Icre unwary floweis to their destruction,
and sow pneumonia and bronchitis broad
cast. The sun shone warmly, and the
great lake seemed to dream of spring
time. The crib larder was like Mother Hub
bard's cupboard, and Kalstrom took his
small boat and rowed ashore. In the few
hours ho spent among tbo shops aud in
taking a glass of beer with his friend?,
the wind changed, and when ho reached
the shore with his stores, he found tie
lake churned up to the fury peculiar to
inland seas.
He was worried, but had such confl ieuco
in his little Irish girl, as he called her,
that he spent tho night quietly. Tbe next
day found tho storm as wild as ever, and
he spent the hours of daylight striding up
and down the shore, for by this time he
knew the few provisions had given out,
and that his wife was actually suffering
for food. Twice he launched his boat,
and twiee it swamped.
At dark tho light gleamed out from the
crib top, but to KaUtrom's oyo it had a
baleful glare, and morning found him
determined " I'll go ev I her to svim vor
it," as he sworo with some round Scar
dinavian oaths. Fortunately tho wind
was moro quiot, and, after hard work ha
came under the lee of tbe crib-walls. His
wife had spied him, and she cast him a
noosed rope from tbe top story of tho
crib ; for the waves rolled so high that all
the storm doors and shutters were bat
tened down and the white caps spit at the
lantern as they drove before tho wind.
He caught the ropa, and passed up his
bundlo of supplies. Sho dropped it a
second time ; and, just as ho got it under
his arms a great wave swamped the boat,
leaving him clinging to tbo wall, blinded
and bruised, and depending on tho little
woman up aloft for his life.
She began hauling on tho rope, and had
drawn him as high as the still frame ho
thrusting fingers and toes into whatever
crevices offered. As ho reached his right
hand up, the wind came round tho corner
with a yell and tore him loose, dropping
him into the lako ; but tho faithful Irish
girl paid out tho line as fast as she could,
and he found himself with a chanco for life
still in his reach.
Up he came, hand over, hand, aud as ho
entered tho window ho saw her tall, and
in tho dim light he noticed a strango dis
coloration of her face, a black stain on tho
bright rag carpet, and tho fact that her
dress was torn to rags iu front.
Well, to make a long story short, when
he picked her up he found tho wedding
finger of her leit hand entirely gone, aud
the tendon ripped out up to the elbow. It
had been caught between the ropo aud
the stono casing when ho fell, and his
great weight, plying against the wedding
ring, had dono the mischief. But, as sho
said, " It weren't a time for fainlin',
miss." Aud sho had hauled him up with
the right hand and tboso strong white
teeth.
The rugging of tho hemp had cut her
mouth cruelly, and sho had ground her
knees against the wall so desperately that
the thick stuff gown tho woro was frayed
through and through.
That night the wind shriekod and
roared till tho lake went mad with the
noise, and tho waves threw their spray
among the pigeons under tho eve of tho
lantern-roof, and the injured woman
moaned through the house lor the relief
that could not come. Kalstrom signalled
and signalled for help, and four days after
the accident a boat got out, and Mrs.
Kalstrom was taken to the hospital, where
the wound was dressed, and where she lay
for many a weary day.
When I saw her first, I noticed with
great satisfaction that a fall of pretty lace
covered her maimed hand, and that " Big
Charlie " under his rongh husk held a
real reverence and affection for her. To
these feelings he bore witness everywhere,
and when his friends would play upon him
and 'half in jest and half in earnest : ''Ah,
Charlie, you'r a fine fellow, ain't you?"
he would answer with naive conceit and
confidence :
" Yase, I am ; for I hef gornmanded a
bark of a dousand duns ; but dere's a
better dan me at home. And ev anybody
says ' Kalstrom's a vine vellow, you gan
dell bim. Yase, but Knilstrom's vile is
a viner.' "

"Pa," said tho Rev. Mulnittle's little
son, " Samson was a strong man, wasn't
he?" "Samson was tho strongest man
that ever lived." ' Tell mo about him-"
" It was intended that Samson should be
the strongest man, and before ho was
born" The bewildered expression
on the child's face arrested the
minister in his narration. " Before
he was born ?" asked the boy. " Yes ;
before that is before he was found in the
hollow stump." "Just like his sister."
" Yes ; just before he wa found an angel
appeared and foretold of his strength,
saying that no razor must touch his
head." "Was the angel afraid that the
razor would cut him ?" "No; the angel
meant that his strength lay in his hair
and that his hair must not not bo
out off." "If I let my hair grow long
can I lift more than I can now?"
fI don't know about that." "Arc
women stroneer than men?" "No."
" But they have got longer hair?" "Yes,
they have longer hair." " A woman
couldn't whip yoa, could sho ?" " No ;
not easily." " Was Sampson a Demo
crat ?" , I don't know." " But why
don't you know, I'd know if I was as old
as jou. How many was it that Samp-'
son killed?" One thousand?" "Ho
was bad, wasn't fie?" "No." "But
when a man kills anybody he's bad ?".
"The Lord was with Samson.,' "But
the Lord savs you musn't kill anybody.
Did Samson go to Heaven?" "I suppose
so." "He is the strongest angel there
isn't be ?" "You are getting foolish again."
"But I want to know. Will you know
Samson when you go to Heaven?" "I
suppose so." "But you won't fool around
him will you? If ho was to hit you he'd
break your wings, wouldn't he?" "Go to
your mother. The next time you attempt
to question me about the Bible I shall
whip you."
A Glance Into the Future.
Washington Republic.
It is not often that tho people of one
generation have tho privilege of knowing
how the world wags with its posterity,
hut an ingenious sheet published by the
Chicago Herald lifts the veil of ignorance
under which we are now smothering and
flashes in our eyes the electric light of the
moro enlightened civilization of the year
19S2. A perusal of the paper, while
amusing, is not uninstructive, as will be
seen from the following advertisement :
" Lost. A two-Inch plank, sixteen feet long
had three knots in it ; suitable reward given
and no questions asked ; the loser it a poor
man."
What better commentary could there
be upon the present reckless waste of
forest lands than tbe fact that a hundred
years hence a small piece of timber may be
valuable enongh to bo advertised for when
lost ? Our pr:-sent day, morbid fashions
tcceivo a well deserved rebuke in tbe de
scription of the judicial killing of a mur
derer quietly and by means of electricity ;
and the arrest is noted of a lady, tho wile
of a prominent man of Chicago, for hav
ing tho temerity to rovive an ancicut nine
teenth century custom of presenting the
oondemncd man with a bouquet. Con
gress comes in for several smart wraps
over tho knuckles. In the rcpoi t of jiu
antiquarian lecturo dclivcied by :i Mr.
Smith (for that gentleman still lives in
1982) appears an allusion to a well organ
ized band of pirates known as the ' River
and Harbor lluccaneeis," who iufestul
nil parts of the United States and wIiofo
stealings iu one jear amounted to $18,
000,000. Tiic execution is announced of a
brakemau whobo caielchsucss resulted in
great loss of life Oil one of the railroads of
tho day a grojt improvement on our cor
oner's verdict of " nobody to blame, b.it

future." Let us congratulate our poster
iiy on the manifold bleedings .with which
they arc surrounded.

Ours is a very oxpensivo stato govern
ment, aud is becoming more so every year.
Not only have tho aggregate of expenses
increased, iu tho last twenty yearr, fiom
one, to five, millions; but each depart
ment has grown expensive in propoitiou.
Thero never was greater need for the ap
plication of the economic pruning knife,
nor a better opportunity for the pruner to
get thinks for his work.
To bring the matter nearer home to the
taxpayers wo here enumerate tho expenses
ot some of tho departments. TLo execu
tive department, including the governor's
salary, cost, in 1881, $20,709.98 of which
$0,309.90 were for clerk hire ; and as there
aro only two clerks employed, they are
well paid. The expenses of the state de
partment were $23,:J00.15 in which tbe
sjven cleiks, at a cost of $15,800.15, are
not as well paid as iu tho executive de
partment. Tho expenses of the auditor
general's department foot up $25,8S9.Cti,
with cloven clerks, whose salaiies amount
ed to $18,591.80. Tho state treasurer's
office cost tho taxpayers $10,107.88, where
three cletks wero paid $8,740.77 ;
almost as tony in price as the clerks
in the cxecutivo oAjclv In the depart
ment of internal affair.6, tho expenses
were $o3,C00.05 ; whero sevcn clerks arc
employed at an aggiegatc salary of $27,
100.05, averaging $3,871.41. Iu tho adju
tant general's office wo find tho expenses,
tho sarao year, were $10,489 50. This
includes but part of the adjutant general's
pay, but when tho whole of that is added
it bring them up to $17,712.52. In 18S0,
they wero over over $18,000. Of these
expenses $11,014.25 wot o paid for clerk
biro ; and inasmuch as the law allows the
adjutant general but three clerks, they are
well paid servants, getting nearly $4,000
each, $8,300 were paid for "contingent
expenses." In 18C0 tho adjutant general
was paid $18,181.77 to make repairs to his
office, and that office but a single room
and tho samo year $8,000 were expended
in making repairs to the offices of tho sec
retary of internal affairs. Where did all
this "repairs" money go? Who can
tell ?

Wana maker's.
Silk novelties innumerable
and indescribable. Everything
that ladies or dressmakers have
occasion for in matching; deco
rating, combining. What we
are remarkable for, more than
for anything else in silks, is va
riety ; or, at least; we are re
puted so. You hear it said by
everybody: "If you want to
match anything, or fin,d a rare
silk, even an unexpectable one,
go to Wanamaker's."
The other peculiarity that
everybody expects to find here
is less pleasant to speak of:
lower prices. We put it second,
because there arc people who
don't credit us .with lower
prices. Still, we imagine ihat
if one should assert the con
trary, almost everybody in Phil
adelphia would believe it.
Oftener we speak of other
aspects of our trade ; aspects
less obvious or less recognized.
It is well occasionally to give
old news.

Perhaps this it is. A great many
