P., Lave been frightened and disturbed for moro than a month past by strange noises in their house. The noises are heard in tho night, reusing them from slumber. Somo times they are nothing more than gentle rans. but at other times there come tre mendous thumps that shake tho house and rattlo tho plaster down upon the lloor. These noises bavo been heard in tho street and by the neighbors. News of the disturbance in Mors' house spread through the city, and crowds have of late assembled theic at nightfall blocka ding the street, lining tha doorway, and taking, possession of the place, The police were called upon, and a detail has lately been sent every night to preserve tho peace and protect the family. Tho visitors included those who did not be lieve iu ghosts and who jeered whenever the mysterious noise w.is heard ; outers who belivcd that spit its caused tho noise, and some of a scientific tun, who believed that they could detect and expose tho source of the disturbance. They insulated the beds, placing them on glass plate?, and then, causing tho whole lamily to re tire, and each member watched to see that nono of them produced the sounds by mechanical or elect i io.il action. Still the souuds continued. They always ccsur about 10 p. m., aad aro confined to one of the apartments in Ihcfin-t story. Mis. ilavrouck, Mr. Mors' slater, died iu New Yoik four ycais ago, leaving her little girl Mary to Mors' care, giving him $500 as a consideration and a.'sj 500 to tho child, to be ptid to her when bho should becomo of aje. A few months ago Mary was taken away from Mo; a' by di rection of the bureau of labor and cUar iiy, on the ground that she was not prop erly treated, and was placed iu St. Vin cent's orphan as lum. Mors' declares that the noises aro mado by his deceased &istcr demanding the return of tho child, and that they will not cease till she is ic storcd to them. She is now 10 ycaw old. A few nights ago tho noises were so loud that Mois took his revolver and iircd it iu the room ; but they did not stop, and he says he heard his sister's voico dis tiuctly. Ile made affidavit to these state ments, nud procuied from County Jmlgo Beigel a writ of habeas corpus for tho child, who was brought before the court. She was closely questioned, and said sho wanted to stay in the asylum. The court remanded her to tho institution. The bureau of labor and charity has in formed Mors that ha can have the girl in three moatl.F, providing that tho rap pings cease. KNUAGKUTO iKK;S ACTBhSSS'.S;. HanduialdciiK who Servo tho Ladles of !.';o isallet at Ulty Con; 8 a Night. N. V. Sun. Woman of various ages, vaiiously dress ed, and varying in personal . appearance crowded about the stago door of the Academy of Music yestetday morning. They had come in recponcc to the follow ing advertisement. axteh Ten h.dies abl-j todres actio v. Apply tomorrow to Mile. Isaia, Academy l Music, l'ouiucntu street. The applicants climbed up three fish's of a curious winding .staircase. Long cor ridors that lcsembled the halls of a bote! branched oil' from the staircase, and there were numerous little rooms iu the con idois. Some of the doors were shut and locked, others weio wide open, and revealed glimpses of the actresses' rooms. In one place a number of graceful girls were try ing on dresses before mirrors and laugh ing and chatting. In the last room at the end of the third corridcr sat Mile. Isaia of Col. Maplesou's company. The apartment looked Ike a diessmak er's workroom. Lots of dresses worn by ballet girls and members of tho opera chorus hung ou the walls. Seamstresses were busy sewing stage garments. An Italian gentleman in his shirt sleeves, standing between a table and a gas stove on which irons wcro heating, was busy with big shears and bigger paste poc, lix ing up paper patterns. Mile. Isaia, who was dressed in brown, with a iace collar, caught by a jewelled brooch, received the applicants. She speaks but little English. Her facial expression underwent all changes from contontmcut to gieat irrita tion as she tested tho ability of the callers to bo ladies' dressers. After a time the ten needed were selected,- but others kept coming. Iu captivating Euglish Mile. Isaia said to the teportcr : " Ze gentlemen vill hcv to zee za Colonel Mapleson." The colonel was busy, but Sig. Angelo said : " The girls get 50 cents a night for helping tho ballet and chorus to dress. It doesn't amount to anything. Anybody can do it. It is just liko a gentleman's valet, you know. Ho hands his master his waistcoat at-d trouseis. Tho girls baud the compauy their dresses. Fifty cents a night is tho prico all over the world iu London, Paris, licrlin, New York everywhere." Paddy Gal nod Ills lolnt. Years ago there resided in tho county of Longford, Ireland, an individual noted for his thieving propensities and for tho ready wit he brought to bear iu screening himself from the penal tics for his depre dations. Ou one occasion the craving of his appetite induced him to invade Father Maguhe's yard, and he stole from him a fine fat goose. This, however, hung heavy on his pliable conscience, and he was forced to acknowledge the theft in tho confessional, reserving, however, the name of tho person from whom tho goose had been stolen. " My son," said tho good man, "steal ing is tho most grievous offense against the law of God. A thief cannot be for given until he has restored that which he has stolen. You must therefore take back tho goose to its rightful owner, ask his pardou and then come back to me again." Restitution was not to be thought of and so tho roguo fell back on that which never deserted him liis mother Wt." "I'll givo the goose to youriivcrcr.ee, and ask your rivcrenco to forgivo me," ho said. " No, my son," said tho good priest, " that will not do. You must restore it to its rightful owner." " But, your rivcrencc," said the rascal, " I offered it to the man I stole it from and he wouldn't take it." "If you did that," said tho priest, " you couldn't do moro." And so Paddy gained his point. m Untimely Jealousy. A young roan in an Illinois town stepped iu a church door a moment ono Sunday while the services were going on, and the smart minister taw him and shouted, " go out, you young man, sho is not here." The young man was embarrassed fcr a moment, and then remembering tho sev eral minisitcrial scandals that wero in tho courts in various quarters, ho said loud enough for all to hear him : " Yes she is, you old duffer. You have got her bid behind the organ, and you want to go home with her yourself ?" The minister blushed and said tho ser vices would close by singing tho doxology . IIEISK'S SOBTLK KEFLECTlON. "No," repliod Reine McCloskcy, ner vously pulling to pieces as she spoke a blush rose that had a moment before fallen from the stem, " he makes me Reino and her best girl friend Pansy Perkins were standing in the conservatory of Coastcliff Castle this dreary November afternoon, when tho skies were overcast with sullen looking clouds whose presence foretold a coming storm. They bad been friends from youth, notwithstanding that Pansy had a seal-skin sacquo two winters beforo, got on the right side of tho wheal market,. and gave one to Reine. Theirs was indeed a deathless affection. " Have you seen ' Daniel Rochat ? ' " asked Pansy, suddenly changing the sul ject of conversation. "No," replied Reine; " what is it about ?" "Oh! it's lovely. A man wants to marry a girl and tho loves him terribly. They are married by tho magistrate and then the girl wants to have another cere raony in the church. Tho man refuses be cause he is an rntidel, but finally says he will do as sho likes. Then the giil says she wont have him at all and they part 'The girl refuses to marry him ?" asks Reine, in haggard tones. ' Why, yes ; the refuses utterly." Tho Kind or a Cigar lie Was. A very high-toned looking young man in exquUite moustache, loud plaid clothes, red necktie, low-crowned hat, straw-colored kids and knitting-needle cane, walked into a tobacco shop on Stato street, and throwing down a half dollar on tho coun ter, said : "Mr. Shopkeeper, can you pell a gen tleman a decent cigar ?" "Yes, sir," said tho cigar man meekly. " Wo! I, then, ily around lively and do it. Don't you see that half dollar ?" "Yes, sir. What kind ofa cigar do you want, sir ?" " What kind ?" " Yes, sir." " Why, look at mo, sir, a moment and see for yourself what kind of a cigar would suit me," and ho drew himself up grandly and gazed down on tho shop keeper. The shopkeeper looked and then took in the half dollar, got out a cigar, handing it to tho man with forty-nine cents change and said : "I owe yon half-a-ccut, sir, but I can't mako the change unless yon take auothcr cigar." The nico man looked at the shopkeeper and then at tho cigar, and then at himself, and without a pingle woid walked cut of the shop. Everything that ladies or dressmakers have occasion for in matching, deco rating, combining. What we are remarkable for, more than for anything else in silks, is va riety ; or, at least, we are re puted so. You hear it said bv everybody: "If you want to match anything, or hnd a rare silk, even an unexpectable one, go to Wanamaker's." The other peculiarity that everybody expects to find here is less pleasant to speak of; lower prices. We put it second, because there arc people who don't credit ui with lower prices. Still, we imagine that if one should assert the con trary, almost everybody in Phil adelphia would believe it. Oftener we speak of other aspects of our trade ; aspects less obvious or less recognized. It is well occasionally to give old news. Next-outer circle, south entrance to main building. We're busy enough as to mak ing. If we advertise at all, we ought to say what will not op press us with too much making. Perhaps this it is. A great many seal coats and fur-lined circu lars are ready-made. More sizes are ready-made here than anybody expects; especially the unexpected sizes. Ready made work we can make in July.
