Here and there somebody sells a little something or pretends to bare sold some thing, hot as a whole business is at a stand still. The cigar manufacture iu this city is not as active as it is expected to be at this time of the year, and there is hardly any of the large manufacturers evincing any desire to purchase at eren low figures. In fact the whole industry is in a state cf expectancy. Manufacturers expect doll times and immediate agitation of the tax question, with a speedy abolition of the tax; they also expect that by holding aloof from the marknt prices will fall gradually to the lowest point known for years, and that the anticipated enor mous Influx of Sumatra after January 1 next will aid them more than anything else in this direction. Packers of new leaf expect that shortly the stock in manu facturers' and jobbers' hands will be ex hausted ; that the coming Sumatra will be of such poor quality as to make it unfit for use in this country ; that the tax will soon be abolished, and open for them an extended market, and that there is no rea son why anybody should! feel discouraged in the least. Yes. that mav bo : but why has nearly every holder of new tobacco in our market got the dyspepsia V The sales of the week were confined to about 500 cases '81 Wisconsin Havana seed at from 14 to 19 cents, with some fillery low grades at 8 cents, and 350 cases '81 Ohio at 4 to 8J cents. A few hundred cates old Pennsylvania were also sold at from 10 to 14 cents. Sumatra Continues active, notwith standing the approaching reduction in im port dnty. The large importations which will arrive after Januarv 1st are boasted to consist of the choicest stock. Sales 300 bales ; prices rulo from 95 cents to $1.40. There is very little large and dark stock in the market. Havana Moderately active. Sales 300 bales. Prices firm. Gans' Report. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. 3. The ' Heavenly llccruits " aro composed of members of the salvation army, independ ent Methodists, and other free reuzious workers, and their meetings have often been marked by emotional scenes of striking character. Rude but powerful eloquence has characterized the addresses made to " the recruits." At yesterday's meeting several of the members present bad given in their " experience," and there was a subdued but powerful religious enthusiasm prevailing throughout the hall. Mr. Enos A. Kerns was particularly excited by the speeches, as was to be expected from his emotional and high strung nature. When the excitement bad reached its highest i;oint Mr. Kerns arose to address the mectinz. His face was very pale, but he spoko with considerable power, and his reniat ks made a great impression upon the coezrecation. As be was about to close somo person near him noticed that he ap peared to gasp for breath. He tottered and with a sentence unspoken upon ins lips, fell back dead. There was a great commotion at once, and the dead exuorter was in a moment surrounded by a crowd of mourning friends. He was at once re moved to his home. No. 1737 Wallace street. Mr. Kerns haj been prominently connected with tho Methodist church, and is a member of Trinity church, at Six teenth and Fairmount avenue. For sev eral months past he has been accustomed to visit the recruits every Sunday after noon. Some time ago he was a wholesale tobacco dealer on Market street, near Front, doing a very large business. Re cently he retired and devoted his whole time to the church. For several years he has been suffering from a heart affection, and of late has been annoyed more than usual by this trouble. DZLEVAW, Wis., Sep. 21. 13TS.
