more A 'Worried Republican Othor
Items From Other Places In
The County.
Our Popular Correspondence.
Mr. Evans A. Gregg died at his resi
dence, in Fairfield, last Wednesday, in
tho sixtieth year of his age, of heart dis
ease, falling from the table as he finished
his breakfast. Mr. Gregg was a kind
father, a good man and a true friend.
Protracted meeting commenced Sunday
evening, at Zion church, Fairfield. Tho
future success of Zion is very doubtful,
for " they say" it has lost one of its guar
dian angels.
The Democrats were never so happy.
The young ones realize that a victory for
us is possible, and tho old ones, grown
gray in tho service, but never sick with
hope deferred, rejoice to seo tho wander
ers como back to their old love.
Truly a happy timo for them.
And our Republicans never took a defeat
with a wiser, more courageous grace, and
many of them declare their entire satis
faction with the course things political
liavo taken. They were sick and tired of
.their abused power, but too weak-kneed
to help "ring out the old" and in the new
and share with us tho glory. Vorily, their
Ways are past finding out. But ono of
our Fairfield Republicans is especially un
happy. Some one and wouldn't ho givo
a greenback to know who some ono is?
sent him a salt river ticket, knowing per
haps how such documents worry the
aforesaid Republican. Your itemizcr is
interested in this particular Republican
and his particular ticket, for the latter
endeavors to construct for the former a
reputatiou for the manufacture and circu
lation of all the vile literature in the lower
end of the county; which fact has a
tendency to keep your itcmizer awake at
night?, and streak his curls with wony.
Had the victory been less famous, such a
life could not be " a happy one a happy
one."

The Strasburg literary society will vi
open Monday, November 20th, in Massa
soit hall, and tho Philharmonic soc'oiy
will enliven tho occasion with music.
Mr. Win. Bishop is tho possessor of a
.splendid crop of corn. Tho grains average
of an inch in length. lie also has two
earr, one of which has l,G0O grains and
the other 1,750.
Old Massasoit is under repairs. Tho
painters are giving it a new suit. Tho
hall in which tho lyceum meets November
20fcb, will present a pleasing appearance
to those who may assemble upon that
occasion.
A Grand surprise.
On the 8th inst., tho morning after the
election, there was a grand surprise at the
Colcrain Baptist parsonage, not at tho
returns of tho election, but of wagons,
carriages, horsemen and footmen. Your
correspondent was invited out to dinner
with tho family, by a near neighbor, and
as ho arose from tho table, being but a
short distance from tho parsonage, he
noticed a wagon or two in tho back yard
unloading coal. Wo hurried home, and as
wo noarod the house saw men and women
in full possession of the premises.
And they were still coming. Wo did not
understand it at first, but soon learned
that tho good friends and neighbors wcro
making a doualion. Ono friend sent us a
load of wood early in tho morning, but
this raised no suspicion that thero were
more to follow.
Thero were brought sovcral loads of
coal, wood, corn, potatoes, sweet and
Irish, turnips, beets, cabbage, lard, coffee,
bugar, tc;i, Hour, dross for daughter, with
many other articles. Also a purso of
money to the daughter as organist. Wo
had sumo music, a speech and a prayer.
All wero happy, tho givers and the re
ceivers. Wo heartily thank tho good
Christian people for their kindness to mo
and mine. Pastor.
Religious.
The extra meeting at Colerain Baptist
ehuich is increasing gicatly in interest.
Theio ate many persous, old and young,
making choice of the good part. The
congiegations are large, soino evenings
tho ushers have great difficulty in seating
tho people. Tho only help tho pastor has
is from tho deacons of tho church and
their semes is quite acceptable.

Our exhibit in the Trades Procession of the Bi-Cen-tennial
Celebration on October 25th will illustrate the
great stock of men's and boys' clothing now ready in
Oak Hall. Our preparations for the trade of this An
tumn and Winter already reach
One Million Dollars.
Our stock is in all respects the best we have ever
offered, and we firmly believe has never been equaled
in volume by any retail clothing house in America.
Do not fail to visit Oak Hall. Look at the Clothing
and Piece Goods, go through the workrooms and see
how the vast place goes on. We have a hearty wel
come for all, whether buyers or visitors'. The tens of
thousands of friends we have made in the country
about Philadelphia during the last twenty-two years
are, we are sure, more firmly our friends than ever be
fore. We have gained their confidence by giving them
the best dollar's worth of clothing to be had anywhere,
and we offer a new pledge of fidelity in our low prices
and elegant Autumn stock of this year's sales.
